Brazilian poultry exports volume up, revenue down

The lost month of Q1 2020 came with higher volumes of poultry exported for Brazilian producers but the revenue was down compared with the amount reported in March 2019. The decrease in value is a trend that has been present in the first quarter of the year due to the closure of foodservice businesses in some Asian countries, especially China, and may continue as the COVID-19 pandemic is taking over the world.
Total poultry exports from Brazil came out to 349,500 tons in March, including raw and processed items, the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) reported. The amount is up 2.6% from 340,500 tonnes in March 2019. Revenue was down 1.7% to $552.2 million. Q1 2020 saw 1.021 million tons exported, up 8.8% year-on-year. Q1 revenue was down 6% to $1.635 billion.

"Despite the impact from COVID-19, the industry keeps playing its strategic role of ensuring food security for people in Brazil and several countries around the world, many of which are struggling with the pandemic at this time," stated ABPA chairman Francisco Turra.
