"Poultry-gate" explodes in Poland. Romanians pin prices

Poultry prices are rising in Poland without any explanation, said Polish Minister of Agriculture Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski in a press release. "The minister clearly states that there is no reason to increase these prices. Raising them unreasonably is acting to the detriment of citizens and our state. Food prices paid for agricultural raw materials are one of the lowest in Europe and farmers' gains are not reflected by price increases in stores. We have plenty of food and food processing plants are constantly working. Temporary shortages in supply were caused by increased purchases, which were not anticipated by traders. These deficiencies are replenished regularly," stated the official.
Poland is the largest poultry producer in the EU and the world's third exporter of poultry products, which makes the situation awkward considering that there is no major disruption in the supply chain reported in the Southeast European country. Minister Ardanowski asked the Trade Inspection and the Office of Consumer's Protection and Competition to constantly check changes in food prices in stores and impose criminal penalties in the event of abuse.

On the other hand, Romanian meat and poultry producer Agricola Group announced that it will pin the food prices at a three-month average level and will keep it that way for the next three months. "I have asked the company's owned by Agricola to do that and we expect our partners in retail to have the same conduct", stated the Group's president, Grigore Horoi. Since the Romanian government decided to impose comprehensive measures to limit the spread of coronavirus in the country, Agricola's meat sales have increased by 5-7 percent compared with a normal month in this time of the year. However, the company decided to postpone the launch of new products in the market due to the emergency situation declared by Romanian authorities and the closure of the foodservice sector.
