15% increase in Brazilian pig meat exports

Brazil will certainly overcome the milestone of 1 million tonnes in pig meat exports this year, as demand is still at elevated levels, despite a slowdown in shipments to China in the third quarter. So far, pig meat exports (including offal) are up 15% from the levels reported in the first three quarters of 2020 and new export markets have ascended in Top 10 destinations for Brazilian pork. The Philippines has already received 20,000 tonnes of pork from Brazil since early spring and it is expected to add a few thousand tonnes by the end of the year.
Chile doubled its volumes of pork imported from Brazil, compared to the same period of last year, reaching almost 50,000 tonnes. Other smaller but notable growth markets include Venezuela and Argentina.
China remains the main market (450,000 tonnes), although the Asian country's import demand has fallen overall in recent months, with increased domestic supplies weakening prices. Brazilian shipments to China in the first half of 2021 were 28% higher than during the equivalent period in 2020. By the third quarter, exports remained on par with a year earlier, although this was still more than double the level in 2019.
"The widespread success of Brazilian exports this year has no doubt been aided by the devaluation of the Brazilian Real. The total value of exports for the year to September was BR11.6bn, a 30% increase compared to the year before. However, the increase is smaller in both US dollars (+24%) and Euros (+17%). The strong relative price-competitiveness of Brazilian exports represents a challenge for other global exporters, including the UK, as we compete for buyers on the global pork market", signals Bethan Wilkins, Senior Analyst, AHDB.
