40,000 shrimp ponds in Jiangsu - China to be closed by local authorities
Almost 40,000 shrimp farms from Jiangsu province, China, have been ordered to shut down as local authorities are more concerned about the environmental impact of those enterprises, informs Seafood Source magazine.
Most of the farms are polytunnel-style covered shrimp ponds type and during the summer local authorities have offered CNY 5 ($0.72, €0.63) per square meter in compensation for each of their shrimp sheds and ponds.
At this moment, the measure announced is a fine up to CNY 1 million ($143,600, €126,100) for the shrimp farmers who don't obey the notice or don't switch to other aqua species considered to have a lower environmental impact such as carp and loach.
This stand-off between shrimp producers and Chinese authorities has already reduced the volume of vannemei shrimp in the market with an impact on the prices of this products.
