90 cases of Salmonella Reading infections reported in the United States

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and public health officials are currently investigating the case, while the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) is monitoring the outbreak.

According to CDC, illnesses caused by Salmonella have been reported in Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The CDC says that people got sick because of raw turkey products from a variety of sources contaminated with Salmonella Reading.

In interviews, ill people report eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased from many different locations. Two ill people lived in a household where raw turkey pet food was fed to pets.

The outbreak strain has been identified in samples taken from raw turkey pet food, raw turkey products, and live turkeys. CDC says that this indicates it might be widespread in the turkey industry.

The authorities have not yet identified a common supplier of raw turkey products or of live turkeys.
