Annual food waste in the UK is worth €10.6 billion
A new study by VoucherCodes shows that the average UK household estimates they throw away £6.84 of unused food each week, equating to £355.68 worth of food every year and £9.7 billion (€10.6 billion) across the country, informs New Food Magazine.
A third of British consumers (33%) do a ‘big’ shop once a week – costing £53.01 per household on average – and 56% also top up with fresh food between shops, spending a further £14.92 over the course of the week. Nevertheless, 65% of consumers admit that they are wasting food constantly.
London is ranked No.1 in food waste in the UK, with £10.09 thrown away every week. At the same time, in Newcastle, more than 70% of the population is wasting food on a weekly basis. Only 1 in 5 people in Great Britain is carefully planning the meals for the week ahead, with Millenials having a higher rate in this (29%).
According to Eurostat data, in the EU almost 88 million tonnes of food is wasted every year.
