China lifts embargo on Spanish beef

In 2001, due to the mad cow crisis, the Asian country banned the import of this type of meat from Spain.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has already announced the end of the embargo. For the minister, this news will have a "very positive impact" due to the "difficulty of finding a market as large as the Chinese one".

China plays a crucial role in Spanish food exports. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, in 2023 Spanish producers exported 1.53 million tons of meat and prepared products, 14% less than in 2022. Of that total, 596,924 tons (39%) traveled to China.

The majority of meat exports are pork, with China again the largest customer. As for beef, a total of 27,207 tons were exported, with Ivory Coast being the largest market with 4,813 tons.
