Danes are tearing election meat off the shelves

The demand for fried pork leading up to the general election on March 24 has been so great that Danish Crown's stock and production of pork belly has been completely emptied.

Danes are tearing election meat off the shelves

When Danes sit down on Tuesday and follow the outcome of the general election, many places will have roast pork and parsley sauce at the dinner table.

The appetite for the traditional 'choice pork' is alive and well, and this has been particularly noticeable at Danish Crown, which is Denmark's largest supplier of pork.

In recent weeks, Danish Crown has sold four times as much pork as usual to supermarkets, restaurants and businesses. The only reason the number is not significantly higher is that Danish Crown's capacity has not been able to keep up.

"It is overwhelming how big an appetite the Danes have for election pork, and you really notice that the Danes have adopted roast pork as the dish that belongs on election day. And this does not only apply to Danish homes. The demand from workplace canteens and restaurants is really high. We would like to deliver all the pork that our customers demand, but because we cannot predict the election date in a general election, we are limited by the capacity in production," says Peter Bendixen, Director of Nordic Sales at Danish Crown.

The vast majority of the pork that Danish Crown normally sells is fresh meat. But because the election drums started to rumble, Danish Crown has frozen a lot of pork in advance to be ready for the election. Here, what corresponds to Danish Crown's normal sales of frozen pork belly in six months has been sold in a few weeks.

At the same time, Danish Crown notices that Danes are willing to pay a little more for the dining experience when they gather for a round of fried pork with parsley sauce on election night.

"Election day is special for many Danes, and they want to make a little extra out of their meal. We are therefore seeing a lot of interest in our premium pork with extra thick slices and gourmet salted pork. During the election campaign, we also had to report a complete sell-out of fresh organic pork belly from Friland," says Peter Bendixen.
