FDA is to verify if lab-grown meat and seafood are safe

The lab-grown meat and seafood are produced from cells collected from animals and are then multiplied using non-traditional food technologies.

FDA stated that these technologies could offer certain new opportunities over conventionally developed food products.
Still, FDA considers that the methods and technologies used to growing this type of food raises many important considerations from a technical and regulatory point of view.

FDA announced that it will hold a public meeting on July 12, 2018, entitled “Foods Produced Using Animal Cell Culture Technology.”

The meetings is aimed at providing the public with an opportunity to provide comments related to the production of foods using animal cell culture technology.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb and Deputy Commissioner Anna Abram stated that the agency plans to “share our initial thinking for how we intend to appropriately apply our existing regulatory tools and policies to this novel area of technology.”

Clean meat companies are hoping that with this meeting they will arrive a step closer to launch their products based on lab-grown animal cells into the market.
