Higher electricity bills for 94% of the butcher shops in Spain
More than 90% of the butcher shops in Spain are confronted with higher costs for electricity and almost every entrepreneur in the charcuterie sector is searching for new ways to reduce those costs. "The special situation of these businesses that, due to their characteristics, have facilities and machinery that in some cases need to be active all day, to guarantee food safety", declared Carlos Rodríguez, president of CARNIMAD and CEO of Raza Nostra, during the conference entitled 'Energy efficiency in commerce, given the rise in the price of electricity.
The cost of electricity for small butcher shops in Spain has increased by 300% during the last 12 months and some of the shops are forced to close. Alternatives such as using renewable energies despite the problems that investment may entail; promoting environmental responsibility and relying on the aid offered by the Institutions for this are some of the measures discussed between the participants. "We must promote self-consumption. In places like markets or warehouses, it is something that can be done, it is the most profitable. The work of the trade is within the schedule of the hours of sun, and this is a favorable point," mentioned Jose Zorrilla, manager of Large Accounts at Electry Consulting.
"Investing, for example, in LED lighting is something basic in our sector. All new commercial spaces have it and it helps save the extra expense that was generated with traditional electrical systems, which produced more heat and had to be compensated for that excess with air conditioning," pointed out Mr. Rodriguez.
