Hungary: Bird flu has appeared in new counties

The increased mortality in the 2,800-head goose farm in Heves, Heves County, alerted the livestock owner to the suspicion of the disease. In Gödöllő, Pest County, the disease appeared in a 1,845-head breeding goose herd, where lethargy, diarrhea, nervous system symptoms and increased mortality occurred. In both cases, the Nébih laboratory confirmed the H5N1 subtype of the virus in the dead animals.
The affected herds are being eradicated. A 3 km radius protection zone has been designated around the farms, and a 10 km radius surveillance (observation) zone has been established.

Nebih draws the attention of animal keepers to the strict and consistent observance of disease control regulations even in areas that have not yet been affected by avian influenza. Since the sources of infections were most likely wild birds, everything must be done to avoid direct or indirect contact of poultry with wild birds. Animals must be fed and watered indoors, and feed and bedding must also be stored indoors.
