IAWS. Demand and transparency
One of the best ways to demonstrate the constant demand to which The Spanish White Pork Sector self-submits and transmit it in a transparent way is through the “WELFARE COMMITMENT CERTIFIED” seal, where certified operators not only guarantee animal welfare, but also food safety, animal handling, animal health and biosecurity, being the first seal in animal welfare which performs a more global and holistic approach interrelating all these matters with each other.
The Animal Welfare and Biosafety Technical Regulation INTERPORC ANIMAL WELFARE SPAIN (IAWS) is the regulation that establishes the requirements to be met by companies. Evaluated and validated by The Scientific Committee of experts in animal welfare, not only determines compliance with European regulations but also establishes more demanding requirements, increasing its demand and establishing itself as a certification with the highest standards in animal welfare.
In order to further protect and provide a higher level of demand for animal welfare, the IAWS Technical Regulation considers that some of the requirements described in order to obtain the certification are more critical or significant in relation to physical condition and animal health. Therefore, it establishes that the non-compliance or the unsatisfactory result of those requirements leads to the suspension of the certification process, regardless of the possible compliance with the rest of the requirements, or the need to implement a corrective action plan.
All the requirements established must be met. Consequently, it is necessary for companies to show a corrective action plan subsequently evaluated by independent certification bodies, which are the ones that decide the effectiveness and implementation of these actions to determine or not the award of the certificate.
Transparency is also an important factor. For this reason, on our website, the certified operators of the different groups (farms, slaughterhouses and industry) can be found beside our IAWS Technical Regulation so that anyone can see this information updated.
In short, the experience of The Spanish White Pork sector in animal welfare has allowed it to anticipate the demands of administrations and consumers, and hence through the IAWS certification, it guarantees high standards in animal welfare and biosecurity, in order to satisfy consumers through maximum transparency.
