In 2021, NZ exported meat worth $6.7 billion

New Zealand’s red meat sector exports reached NZ $10 billion ($6.7 billion) last year, a 9% increase compared to 2020, according to data issued by Meat Industry Association (MIA)?. China remained the largest beef importer of beef, accounting for 46% of total exports. Nevertheless, the volume of beef exported to the giant Asian market has remained unchanged but its value increased by more than 30%. Beef exports to the US dropped by 15%, although the value rose by 16%. The third-largest market for NZ beef, Japan kept the same pace of imports as in 2020 (7% of the total volume exported), while its value appreciated by 39%.
"Despite all the disruptions and labour shortages, we were able to make the most of the global demand for red meat and generate record export revenue. The sector is continuing to perform for New Zealand in the most difficult conditions," MIA chief executive Sirma Karapeeva? said, quoted by StuffCo.nz.
Sheep meat and beef exports increased by 5% and 9% year-on-year respectively, with both worth more than NZ $4 billion (US $2.68 billion) for the year. Co-products exports also increased by 19%, to almost NZ $2 billion (US $1.34 billion).
However, for this year, Mrs. Karapeeva warns about difficult times ahead, as supply chain challenges are expected to significantly disrupt exports.
