Indonesia's online sales of beef to boost Aussie livestock trade

With a population of 260 million, Indonesia is depending on Australian cattle to cope with domestic demand for beef. Nevertheless, the livestock trade is to intensify as the online sales of beef is getting stronger thanks to an e-commerce platform specialized in selling food to the hotels, restaurants, catering businesses and consumers, reports abc.net.au.
Sikumis.com is using the Australian beef to promote e-commerce on food but also is eyeing the livestock imports to diversify its offer.
"We still want cattle to come live to Indonesia and be fed and processed locally. Then our big customers consisting of hotels, restaurants and catering businesses will buy live cattle selected from the website, which will then be tailor cut in our partner's slaughterhouse.", explained Edward S Siagian, the founder of Sikumis.com.
Indonesia is the largest market for Australian livestock exports, reaching up to 700,000 head in record years, but during the last two years, the demand decreased due to the higher prices for live animals and from the introduction of cheaper products like frozen buffalo meat from India.
According to the data presented by Sikumis' founder the total value of beef consumption in Indonesia is about 5.5 billion Australian dollars ($4.2 billion).
