JBS invests more than R$35 million in traceability and support for small producers in Pará

JBS has already invested more than R$35 million in cattle tracking and supporting small producers in Pará, as part of a pioneering state program that aims to track the entire cattle and buffalo herd in the region by the end of 2026. The results of JBS's initiatives were presented during the "Expedition to the Sustainable Meat and Leather Market of Pará", an event promoted by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Brazil.

The state program involves a coalition of government, producers, civil society, and industry. As part of the initiatives, JBS has already allocated US$5 million (approximately R$27 million) to its Traceability Accelerator Program, which aims to encourage the adoption of animal tracking tags by the company's indirect suppliers. This includes the donation of 2 million ear tags to producers and 175 readers to the Pará State Agricultural Defense Agency (Adepará).

The Accelerator's initial focus is on Southeast Pará, in the region between Marabá and Santana do Araguaia. JBS teams and their partners will go into the field to identify and visit farms to conduct the work alongside traceability operators trained and accredited by the State of Pará. Readers donated by the company record the animals' individual identification tags, enabling the monitoring of each bovine in the state, which has the second-largest herd in the country.

"Our actions were prepared to scale the state program by supporting direct and indirect suppliers, with the capacity to reach up to 2 million tags for herd tracking. This phase is crucial to overcome bottlenecks and test available traceability tools and solutions at scale", said Fábio Dias, leader of Sustainable Livestock at JBS, during the event.

In a strategic partnership with Adepará and TNC, the JBS Traceability Accelerator Program already has partner companies for field operations. Future expansion includes other regions of the state, such as the Southwest (Altamira, Anapu, and Pacajá), the Lower Amazon (Belterra and Santarém), and Marajó. There is also interest in replicating the model in other states.

JBS also allocated a significant portion of its investment to Green Offices in Pará: the program has received US$2 million (approximately R$10 million) since 2021. They provide free, specialized support for the environmental regularization of rural properties, with a special focus on smallholder farmers.

The main objective of the JBS Green Offices is to assist producers from registration to validation in the Rural Environmental Registry, promote adherence to the Environmental Regularization Program, when applicable, support the lifting of embargoes, and the commercial requalification of non-compliant producers. They also connect producers to commercial requalification programs such as Sirflor and Reconecta Pará.

JBS has four physical offices in the state's southeast (Santana do Araguaia, Redenção, Tucumã, and Marabá). Regularization is accelerated through the Sustainable Territories Platform in partnership with the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainability (Semas). Since 2024, these offices have also provided technical and managerial assistance to producers (EV 2.0).

Nationally, the results are impressive: since the beginning of the JBS Green Offices program in 2021, 18,042 farms have been regularized and 7,005 hectares are undergoing forest restoration.
