Meat production in Turkey fell by almost 4% in 2017

The total red meat production was made from cattle, with 987,482 tons, sheep, with 100,058 tons, goat and buffalo meat, with 37,525 tons and 1,339 respectively.

Furthermore, Turkey's red meat production reached 295,329 tons in December 2017, up by 9.1% compared to the corresponding period from 2016. The amount of red meat produced only in the slaughterhouses in the last quarter of 2017 was 109,080 tons.

The production of beef, in the fourth quarter of 2017, amounted to 260,080 tons, decreasing by 10.4% from the previous turnover, but it was up by 4.5% compared the same period from 2016.

Turkey's production of sheep meat was estimated at 26,033 tons in the last quarter of 2017. It decreased by 21.3% from the previous turnover, but it was up by 68.2% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Turkey needs urgent measures to improve its red meat production

In November last year, the Union Of Turkish Chambers Of Agriculture (TZOB) warned about an ongoing decrease of the red meat production, which is considered to be the main factor that is making the prices surge. TZOB called out then for urgent measures to be taken in the Turkish red meat sector.

The president of TZOB ?emsi Bayraktar said in a statement that the Turkish red meat production decreased by 11.2% year-over-year to 791,417 tons in the first nine months of 2017.

Mr. Bayraktar declared that the main reason for this decrease is a decline in the beef production.

“Turkey’s sheep production and goat production rose by 10.2 percent and 14 percent respectively in the first nine months of the year compared to the same period of 2016. Even buffalo production saw a 330 percent year-on-year increase in the mentioned period. However, Turkey’s cattle production has fallen rapidly in 2017, with the third quarter seeing a 29.4 percent year-on-year decrease,” Mr. Bayraktar said in a statement.

Furthermore, the Turkish official added that urgent action is essential to be taken and that a subsidy of 1,000 Turkish Lira should be offered to producers per breeding cattle.

Mr. Bayraktar also stated that if no action is to be taken, Turkey is going to have to continue to pay billions of dollars for the import of beef and feeder or breeding cattle, after the country already paid 5 billion dollars for such imports in the 2010-2016 period.
