Russians ate more meat and fish in 2017

Meat consumption in Russia increased by 500 g per capita in 2017, to 74.5 kg. Whereas when it comes down to fish, consumption increased by 300 g per capita, up to 19.8 kg.

The rise in demand for meat and fish appeared due to an increase in production. A representative of Rusprodsoyuz Dmitry Leonov declared that the output of meat products exceeded 10.2 million tons last year, up by 4.8% compared to 2016. The increase in the domestic meat production was due largely at the expense of chicken meat, Izvestia reports.

Therefore, the monthly output for chicken meat was 8-10% higher in 2017 compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, fishermen reported a good catch in 2017. The fish production rose by 3% to 4 million tons.

The head of the scientific direction of the Federal Research Center for Nutrition and Biotechnology Alexander Baturin told Izvestia that Russians' structure of food consumption now does not differ during holidays and ordinary days. Furthermore, Mr. Baturin added that Russians perceive sausages, meat and fish delicacies as products for daily consumption.
