Slight decrease in EU beef exports for 2021

In 2021, the EU member states have exported 457,000 tonnes of beef, both fresh and frozen, which is 2% less than the previous year. In addition, 218,000 tonnes were imported, 8% less than in 2020. EU's self-sufficiency rate in beef is higher than 100%, which means that at least 8 to 10 percent is always available for export.
Trade between Ireland and the United Kingdom had a significant weight in the total volume of European exports. Although in the first quarter of the year there was a small bump caused by Brexit, as of April its levels recovered until reaching the figures for the end of 2020 again. However, that drop at the beginning of the year made the figure year-on-year decrease by 10%.
On the other hand, it should be noted that the United Kingdom not only purchased less beef from the EU, since its import figures also contracted with countries such as Argentina or Paraguay, reaching a total decrease of 24% compared to the previous year, according to a market analysis from AHDB.

By 2022, the EU Commission expects trade in both directions to increase. Exports are expected to grow thanks to demand from value markets such as Hong Kong or Norway. Imports, meanwhile, are also forecast to increase thanks to the full opening of the HORECA channel sectors.
