Spain expands the range of pork products that can be exported to China

A new sanitary protocol signed between Spain and China allows the European country to expand the range of pork products exported to the Asian country. The protocol will allow to significantly expand the range of products authorized fresh meat and cured products such as ham, shoulder, loin, and sausage. So far, frozen meat, boneless ham, and offal have been exported to China, according to CdeComunicacion website.
With this new Protocol, access to higher added value products is possible, such as ham with bone and other cured products, which opens great possibilities for the meat industry to access the largest market in the world in very advantageous conditions. In addition, the new text with the sanitary and animal health requirements of pig exports from Spain will allow the export of refrigerated fresh meat, thus opting for a new market niche with high-quality products and a greater differentiation of the product.

China is by far the largest market for pork products, consuming approximately 50% of the total produced worldwide. The pig accounts for two-thirds of the total consumption of meat in the diet of Chinese consumers, and although they are also the main producers in the world, they constitute the largest import market.
Since last year, Spain has become the main supplier of pork in the Chinese market, reaching a volume of 373,00 tonnes worth €574 million.
