Switzerland: Meat supply increased in the first half of 2025

The increased overall supply is particularly evident in beef and poultry. In both categories, demand could only be met through additional imports. For the other types of meat, supply remained stable overall.

The increased supply is also reflected in the retail sales figures compiled by NielsenIQ: Sales of fresh meat and meat products increased by almost four percent compared to the same period last year (measured in tonnes). This continues the positive trend of the past year in 2024 and clearly demonstrates that meat is popular and still has a firm place on the Swiss menu.

Manufacturing companies benefit from stable demand

Producers are benefiting from the positive market situation through high slaughter cattle prices. Record prices were already reached for various animal categories in the first quarter of 2025. This contributes to stabilizing the economic situation of the farms and underscores the importance of reliable demand for the entire value chain.

Domestic production remains a key concern

Even though import volumes have increased in some areas to meet demand, strengthening domestic production remains crucial. Achieving the highest possible level of self-sufficiency in meat not only guarantees short transport routes and high production standards, but also secures added value and jobs in Switzerland.
