USMEF: 23 U.S. pork plants receive export authorization to China

"This is good news", he said. "There are many obstacles and difficulties in the meat trade with China, but the addition of some pork plants that had not previously been approved or registered to export to China is a positive development".

He also asserts that more work is needed to address the high tariffs faced by U.S. pork plants.

"I would say this will likely lead to some increases in export volumes", Schuele said. "But keep in mind that there is still a total tariff of 57% on U.S. pork, and on most varieties of pork entering China. This compares to the 12% tariff paid by most suppliers".

According to the National Pork Producers Council, the recent revisions, which also included 83 poultry facilities, apply to products produced after June 11.

In a statement, the NPPC asserted that the approval of these 23 pork processing plants "opens new commercial opportunities for certain types of U.S. pork products. China is an important destination for certain types of U.S. pork products, such as offal, which provide greater value to U.S. producers than to those in other countries".

More than 475,000 tons of U.S. pork valued at over $1.1 billion were exported to China in 2024, with approximately 55% of pork offal exports going to China.
