6218 | Spain: INTERPORC highlights the socio-economic importance of the pig sector | The Interprofesional INTERPORC has shown Luis Planas, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the outstanding socio-economic dimension of the sector, a true source of employment and wealth in Spain. |
The meeting between the minister and the management of INTERPORC took place during his visit to the Interprofessional stand at the Meat Attraction fair. There, Manuel García, President of INTERPORC, thanked him for "the collaboration that we have always received from the minister and his ministry" and the minister has also conveyed his full support and the need to go hand in hand in defense of the livestock and agri-food sector.

García recalled, during their meeting, the importance of the white-coated pig sector : "we create 415,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs, with a turnover of more than 18,000 million euros".

In this sense, the president of INTERPORC has valued "our attachment to the countryside, to the small towns of Spain. The sector was born there centuries ago and we are still there, investing 1,200 million a year in rural areas. An economic bet that serves to create employment and a future for its inhabitants, which fixes the population and prevents much-needed services from disappearing".

But, above all, García has recalled the international dimension of the sector. "We are a world leader recognized for the quality and food safety of our products, our high animal welfare standards, and our commitment to sustainability. To all this, we must add the seriousness of our companies, which have carved out an image of trusted partners throughout the world".

These ingredients have led the white-coated pig sector in Spain to be the second world exporter with close to 3 million tons in 2022, with a positive trade balance of 7,700 million euros.

The President of INTERPORC had also an impact on the resilience and adaptability of the sector, which has been able to provide an effective and rapid response to challenges such as COVID-19 or to the new demands of consumers around the world.

"With constant investment in R&D, pork companies are putting increasingly healthier products on the markets, with less fat and salt, and very tasty". Very versatile foods that meet the nutritional needs of population groups such as children, athletes, women, the elderly... and, as he pointed out, are part of the Mediterranean diet, recognized by doctors and nutritionists as one of the healthiest in the world.

Finally, Manuel García explained to Luis Planas the INTERPORC Action Plan for 2023. A year with many activities, both nationally and at major international events.

Presence at fairs; reception of commercial delegations; solid work in communication to fight against hoaxes with which the sector is attacked; or the continuity of collaborations with the Spanish Network of the United Nations Global Compact for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and universities and researchers, among others.

Many challenges for which the president of INTERPORC has shown his confidence that "as always, we will be able to count on the collaboration and support of the minister for the promotion and dissemination of the benefits of our products, as well as the values of sustainability and excellence in work that define our companies and professionals".
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-07 00:10:58 | 2025-07-26 07:53:16 | Details Edit Delete | |
6217 | IFA: Farmers should hold firm against factories as prices rise | Irish Farmer’s Association Livestock Chairman Brendan Golden said beef farmers should resist efforts by the factories to drag prices down. “The behaviour of some factories in trying to reduce quotes shows no regard for farmers who have made huge investments in finishing cattle over the winter months,” he said. |
Brendan Golden said beef farmers know the impact from the Chinese market and will not be fooled by the usual factory propaganda in attempts to control the market place.
“Factories are acutely aware of how tight beef supplies are. They’re trying to manipulate the situation by reducing throughput. This is unacceptable and must stop. Beef prices must reflect the reality of the market place and the increased demand in higher prices,” he said.

He said Bord Bia predict supplies of beef cattle will be down by 60,000 head this year, with all of this reduction taking place in the first half of the year.
Teagasc figures clearly show prices need to be in the region of €6.00/kg for winter finishers to be covered and we are still a long way short of this target.

“Farmers should sell hard and demand immediate price increases. Despite some offering lower quotes, factories are actually doing deals for 10c/kg above quotes to secure enough cattle,” Brendan Golden concluded.
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-07 00:03:09 | 2025-07-26 10:32:07 | Details Edit Delete | |
6216 | Australian beef outperforms on the world trade stage | Australian cattle prices have continued to drop since the recent peak in November 2022, as concerns regarding global economic conditions grow alongside the expectation of higher supply in Australia. This has resulted in the Heavy Steer Indicator dropping by 24% to A351¢/kg live weight (lwt). |
There have been varying trends in other producing nations countries, however the premium for Australian cattle has been preserved despite the declines in price.
Using data from MLA’s National Livestock Reporting Service (NLRS) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to replicate the Brazilian Boi Gordo Heavy Steer Indicator, it’s clear that this shift – as well as cattle prices across major beef-trading nations generally – have been moving with local weather patterns and the broader economic environment.

From a local peak in October 2022, Australian heavy steer prices have fallen 22% to US418¢/kg carcase weight (cwt). This reflects the fall in price of Australian cattle, but also a slight decline in the Australian dollar which has kept Australian prices competitive in the global market and, to some extent, protected prices from global conditions.

Brazilian heavy steer prices have been falling in US dollar terms since April 2022, with the fall in price broadly matching the decline in Australian heavy steer prices.
This means that Australian cattle are retaining a premium over Brazilian cattle in real terms, reflecting the higher demand for Australian beef and the increasing premiumisation of Australian beef on the international market.

In early November 2022, heavy steer prices in the USA overtook Australian prices and have continued a steep rise since. This has opened a US148¢/kg cwt gap as American supply shrinks and Australian supply expands.

Since 2015, Australian cattle prices have been trading at a premium to South American prices and have been more comparable to US prices. Despite recent price declines, the premium Australian cattle hold over their Brazilian equivalents has been retained, suggesting that the efforts of Australian producers and processors to ensure a global market advantage for a reliable premium for Australian cattle has been successful.

This bodes well for Australian beef for the next several years, as it suggests that as supply continues to grow, prices have a higher floor than in previous high-production periods.
| 1 | Retail | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-07 00:00:08 | 2025-07-26 16:26:17 | Details Edit Delete | |
6215 | Welsh red meat exports hit £250 million in 2022 | The value of lamb and beef exports from Wales hit the £250 million mark in 2022, according to analysis of HMRC UK trade data by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC). |
The total value of Welsh Lamb exports in 2022 was £171.5 million. Exports to the largest European partners – France, Germany and Belgium – were all up on 2021, with the French market alone worth an estimated £77 million to Welsh sheep farmers.

The value of beef exports from Wales also jumped by nearly 50 per cent – from £50.9 million in 2021 to £75.6m in 2022 – reflecting both increased trade and exchange rate factors. Notable growth was recorded in exports to France and the Netherlands, as well as some emerging markets such as Japan.

The good news comes as HCC and leading Welsh processing companies completed a week of further promotions for PGI Welsh Lamb in the Middle East to target audiences attending the giant Gulfood trade show in Dubai.

HCC’s Head of Supply Chain Delivery, Jon Parker, said:
“These are really encouraging export figures for Welsh red meat and it’s great to see growth in HCC’s priority markets. We’re leading the way as global trade returns to a more normal pattern after the Covid disruption.”

The figures show the emerging markets in the Middle East bounced back after Covid, with increased trade in the valuable foodservice and hospitality sector. There were particularly notable increases in exports to Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Jon referred to additional work undertaken to promote the PGI Welsh Lamb brand in the Middle East: “We’re determined to resume the levels of growth that we had been seeing in exports to the Middle East region before Covid, so the recovery into the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait is very promising,” he said. “It will all help at a time when domestic demand in the UK is less buoyant than it was.”
Jon added, “At late-February’s Gulfood trade show there was a huge amount of interest in Welsh Lamb. We’ll be working alongside governments and processors to ensure we take advantage of every opportunity with a varied programme of promotion.”

There were fewer lamb exports to Hong Kong but growth was seen in North America, with the first shipments to the US made towards the end of 2022 and trade to Canada worth over £3 million over the year.

“With sales in the home market having fallen back from the peaks seen during the Covid years of 2020 and 2021, and British consumers feeling the cost-of-living pinch, industry experts are united in projecting that overseas sales are more important than ever to securing good returns for farmers and processors,” said Jon.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-06 00:01:38 | 2025-07-26 06:01:40 | Details Edit Delete | |
6214 | AHDB will attend the Foodex exhibition in Japan | AHDB will be attending one of Asia’s largest food and drinks exhibitions this week to grow red meat exports to Japan, which were worth more than £22.5 million last year. |
Foodex returns this week, and the four-day event in Tokyo is expected to attract around 3,000 exhibitors and thousands of buyers from across Japan.
Joined by eight exporters, AHDB will showcase beef, lamb and pork from the UK, providing an opportunity to promote quality red meat from the UK to potential importers and increase shipments of red meat in the year ahead.

According to the latest data from HMRC, last year more than 5,000 tonnes of red meat was exported to Japan, with beef making up almost two-thirds of the total shipments.
Beef exports increased from 2,340 tonnes to 3,175 tonnes, worth £16.3 million – up 68 per cent. Pork shipments were valued at £5.5 million, rising from 1,425 tonnes to 1,518 tonnes. Lamb exports rose from a modest 74 tonnes in 2021 to 314 tonnes, worth more than £781,000.

AHDB Head of Asia Pacific Jonathan Eckley said: “We are delighted to be returning to Japan for Foodex, one of the most important events in our export trade show calendar. This year marks the first time in three years that our team will be able to attend in person following the pandemic and we are excited to be able to reconnect with potential buyers in this important market.
“Japan is a growing market for our red meat exports, steadily rising each year as demand for our high-quality meat continues to grow. We are keen to maximise on the opportunities that Japan offers and help our exporters grow their business through face-to-face meetings with importers and networking opportunities that AHDB has created.”

With a population of 125 million, Japan is the eleventh biggest country in the world and the third biggest economy, but due to insufficient agricultural land, Japan relies on imports for around 60 per cent of the food it consumes.
| 1 | Events | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-06 00:00:04 | 2025-07-26 11:35:01 | Details Edit Delete | |
6213 | 72 percent of the Swiss have very high confidence in their local meat | The Proviande association study shows that a majority of consumers consider meat to be an important part of their diet. However, the willingness to pay a higher price for Swiss meat has decreased. It is gratifying that for 99% of those surveyed, the “Swiss” origin is important when buying meat. |
Since 2001, Proviande has periodically carried out a quantitative image survey of private consumers on the subject of meat and an evaluation of the current knowledge of the Swiss population. The current survey offers exciting results:

72% of those questioned have great confidence in Swiss meat. None of the respondents has no confidence in Swiss meat.

The «Swiss» origin is very important for 70% of the respondents and important for 29%. The importance of origin has tended to increase over the past few years. Only 2% of those surveyed said they had “great trust” in foreign meat products.

54% pay attention to labels when buying meat, more than in 2019 (43%) and 2016 (38%).

In terms of animal welfare, the most important things to those surveyed were respect for the animals (57%) and exercise (55%).

What concerns consumers when buying meat is the environmental aspect and species-appropriate animal husbandry. They generally consider animal husbandry in Switzerland to be species-appropriate. According to Heinrich Bucher, director of Proviande, the meat industry therefore relies primarily on education and communication of facts in these two areas: "It is important to give consumers a better understanding of meat production in Switzerland. Switzerland has one of the strictest animal protection laws in the world and offers the best conditions for sustainable meat production: we need to communicate this more widely."

Knowledge about agriculture and meat production is as low as in previous years and partly characterized by false assumptions. The proportion of imported animal feed is massively overestimated: the respondents assume that on average 38% is imported, 15% is correct. On the other hand, the proportion of soy from certified cultivation is massively underestimated: Switzerland imports 99% of its soy for animal feed from certified cultivation - the respondents estimated this proportion at only 40%.

Many consumers also still need information in the area of animal feed additives: when asked about production materials that are banned in Switzerland, antibiotics (54%), hormones (44%) and genetically modified animal feed (41%) were mentioned most frequently.

To protect consumers, there are strict legal requirements regarding the use of antibiotics in livestock, compliance with which is regularly monitored. This includes the mandatory prescription of antibiotics by a veterinarian and compliance with the withdrawal period after treatment: if an animal has to be given antibiotics because of a specific disease, it must not be slaughtered for a specified period of time. And this until the drug is completely broken down in his body.

There is obviously a great deal of ignorance about the cycles underlying animal production in Switzerland. Only 44% of respondents know that a cow must have a calf in order to produce milk. Even if this value has increased significantly since 2016 (23%), it is still low. In Switzerland, the dairy and meat industries are closely linked. Knowledge of these cycles is central to understanding sustainable production.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-05 00:10:27 | 2025-07-25 18:48:43 | Details Edit Delete | |
6212 | Specialization is a major asset for Schils young animal feeds | Schils BV of Sittard in Limburg has been one of the largest internationally successful manufacturers of young animal feed for years. The company — a subsidiary of the VanDrie Group — specialises in the development, production and sale of milk replacement products for young animals, such as calves, piglets, lambs and kids. Schils stands out because the company is more than just a manufacturer. The company also has the right specialists in-house for the best young animal products. Paul Steeghs, technical specialist in piglet rearing, is an obvious example of this. |
He ran his own pig farm for 22 years, and knows the industry inside out; in 2017 he joined Schils where he is able to put his practical knowledge to good use. "Piglet feed has become increasingly specialised in recent years, so Schils was looking for a professional. That was when I came into the picture," explains Steeghs, who works with a business development manager and a nutrition specialist on the Schils piglet team.

At Schils, practical knowledge and specialisation have helped develop a wide range of animal feeds for piglets in recent years. They also produce semi-finished products. Steeghs: "We are very confident of the quality of the animal feeds we can supply to our customers. One of Schils’ strengths is that, with our practical knowledge, our customers can always find what they need within our existing range.” Even so, a tailored approach is always an option. “We can supply exactly what the customer needs," says Steeghs.

The Schils range for piglets ensures healthy, optimum growth. Schils distinguishes itself with its specialists’ willingness to experience how their products are received by the animals on location. Steeghs supports his Dutch customers in the areas of piglet feed and management for up to two weeks after weaning. "The knowledge we gain in this country is also valuable to our sales and support abroad,” says Steeghs. “When we have a new customer, I visit them several times a week at the start. Does the product do what we expect it to? Can any minor adjustments be made? Could the customer do something different themselves?" Steeghs’ practical experience is often of great benefit in such cases. He illustrates this with an example of a customer for whom the initial feeds were an immediate success, while the follow-on milk wasn’t. "I noticed that the feed system required adjustment, which resolved the problem with the follow-on milk. Thanks to my experience as a pig farmer, and frequent visits to customers, we at Schils keep on learning and are able to provide optimum support. This is a major advantage and it works both ways."

Every day, the Schils team collaborates with international partners in the market. This is a partnership the company is proud of. The team in Limburg is in contact with sales staff in domestic and foreign markets. The lines are short, and if a request for a solution comes in from abroad, the specialists can resolve this anywhere in the world.

Schils is active in no fewer than 75 countries; from Europe, Central and South America to Africa, Asia and Oceania. "We are everywhere, and we’re also developing new markets," says Steeghs. Brazil is a great example of a growth market. "There are a lot of sows, and the challenge is to provide the piglets with optimum supplementary nutrition and boost productivity." In that regard, Schils carried out some interesting research in the Netherlands: manually supplementing Schils milk products in powder form. When Steeghs later travelled to Brazil - where there are far fewer automatic feed systems - he tested these feeds with the international partner. "That was a success, because in contrast to the Netherlands, it is often impossible to mix water and powder in Brazil. Supplementing by hand worked out very well. In this way, we use the knowledge gained in our own country to provide our Brazilian customers with better support."

In order to further optimise piglet rearing, Steeghs has introduced various automatic and flexible feed systems at Schils. The best-known example is the self-designed ALFF system, which gets the very best out of the Schils products. ALFF provides fresh piglet milk 24 hours a day, fully automated, and the system can be relocated quickly and easily. Hundreds have been sold around the world. In Spain alone - a piglet market with a lot of competition - Schils has sold a hundred of these ALFF systems. "The system has undergone trials and proven its worth in practice. Our customers are very enthusiastic."

Since then, Steeghs has also developed a successor to this system: the ALFFcup. Schils presented the new ALFF system during EuroTier 2022 in November, and two of these systems are now operational in the Netherlands. The ALFFcup system is an automatic feed system for piglet milk and liquid pre-starters. What is unique about the ALFFcup system is that the cups are not fitted as standard in every farrowing pen. Within this modular system, the cups are placed where and when required. The system can be scaled up quickly and easily, with one main aim: to reduce the number of foster sows per group to zero! Steeghs: "With this innovation, we’re really working with the farmer to achieve the best possible yield."
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-05 00:05:51 | 2025-07-26 15:12:25 | Details Edit Delete | |
6211 | NCBA calls for immediate halt to Brazilian beef imports | Recently Brazil reported another atypical case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) to the World Animal Organization for Animal Health (WOAH). That report indicated 35 days elapsed between when the case was first identified on Jan. 18, 2023, and the date it was confirmed on Feb. 22, 2023. |
This represents an unacceptable delay that is in clear violation of WOAH reporting requirements. It is clear that Brazil is incapable of prompt testing and the reporting requirements that all nations must follow when engaging in international beef trade. Because of a repeated pattern of delayed reporting, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) is calling on Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to take immediate action to indefinitely suspend beef imports from Brazil until it has made systemic reforms and takes necessary steps to restore confidence in the nation’s ability to participate in the global beef supply.

"We have seen Brazil repeatedly fail to meet the 24-hour requirement for reporting of animal diseases listed by WOAH. In order to protect the safety and security of the U.S. herd and American cattle producers, we demand USDA take immediate steps to block further beef imports from Brazil," said NCBA President and South Dakota cattleman Todd Wilkinson. "Furthermore, we expect USDA to keep the border closed to Brazil until they can demonstrate that they are willing and able to play by the trade rules that govern all other nations. If they can’t play by the rules, they don’t deserve access. Secretary Vilsack needs to act now, rather than kicking the can down the road."

NCBA sent a letter to USDA demanding immediate action on this issue. NCBA is also supportive of bipartisan Senate legislation to suspend Brazilian beef imports pending a review of Brazil’s standards.

"For too long, American cattlemen and women have honored the laws governing international trade, promoting fair and equitable standards, only to have nations like Brazil ignore those same standards. Brazil cannot be allowed to benefit from the investments we have made to build a massive demand for beef around the globe," Wilkinson said. "If trade partners like Brazil fail to follow the rules, there must be consequences, they must be painful and immediate."
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-04 00:10:45 | 2025-07-26 15:37:35 | Details Edit Delete | |
6210 | Australia: Weekly cattle and sheep market wrap | Cattle market prices were softer this week after a recovery in yardings from last week, informs Meat & Livestock Australia. Numbers in Queensland lifted by 3,598 head, with this increase largely being attributed to the Dalby sale which strengthened its yarding by 1,381 head week-on-week. |
There has been an increase of 16,674 head for Queensland year-to-date, demonstrating the strong supply of cattle coming to marketable weight. Consequently, the increase in numbers has placed pressure on prices as buyers have more livestock to select from and producers look to sell off some of their herd numbers.

The Restocker Yearling Heifer Indicator lifted its throughput this week and continued to soften in price, easing by 20¢. The inflated prices at the end of 2021 and during 2022 could not have been maintained in a market flooded by current supply. In the last few months, buyers have only paid for cattle with good finish and weight.

Dalby had the highest contribution to the indicator, lifting by 319 head week-on-week. This left the Restocker Yearling Heifer at 346.05¢/kg live weight (lwt).

For the first time since January 2021, Eastern States Young Cattle prices fell below Eastern States Trade Lamb prices. This highlights the price correction in the market to retail, as this is generally what supermarket brands are buying.

Trade lamb is at a 24¢ premium compared to cattle.

National trade lamb prices have softened, with a 7% lift in throughput. Wagga Wagga contributed to 21% of the throughput, with prices softening 43¢ at the saleyard.

The demand for heavy lambs with good condition and weight continues as the Heavy Lamb Indicator strengthened 17¢ week-on-week.

The top five contributors, Wagga Wagga, Armidale, Ballarat and Forbes, were all trading at a premium against the national average and made up 63% of the throughput.

Forbes took the largest premium in prices at 830.03¢/kg cwt, 22¢ above the national average and had their total yardings lift by 1,100 head.

Forbes lamb yardings softened with demand for heavy and extra-heavy lambs remaining high.

Lamb yardings at Wagga Wagga lifted and buyers were chasing short-skinned lambs with the softening in the skin market.

Slaughter continues to strengthen for cattle, remaining above 100,000 head. Queensland cattle slaughter lifted 8% with increased supply of slaughter weight animals available in the market.

Sheep slaughter continues to climb, reaching 182,059 head this week. 6209 | INTERPORC: Regionalization schemes must be admitted internationally in case of ASF | "We cannot forget that the arrival of African Swine Fever (ASF) implies the closure of international markets, so we must press from Europe so that regionalization schemes are admitted internationally if cases occur." These are the words of the director of the Spanish white pork Interprofessional (INTERPORC), Alberto Herranz, in his intervention, in a webinar organized by the Official College of Agricultural Engineers of Castilla and León and Cantabria. |
For the director of INTERPORC, "keeping ourselves free from African Swine Fever is everyone's job, remembering and faithfully complying with biosafety regulations." Animal safety is a priority, he pointed out and, therefore, it is important “that we pay close attention to the evolution of African Swine Fever in some European countries. Likewise, we are paying special attention to the Rosalía strain, which affects weaned piglets”.

Herranz, who outlined the most important factors for the sector during 2023 in his appearance, also referred to the hyper-regulation that affects the sector, "which is in permanent adaptation to European and national directives, regulations and decrees".
But without a doubt, for the director of INTERPORC "image, communication and reputation go together" and are the most important factor for the sector today, "because of the distorted image offered by groups opposed to livestock and meat".

Herranz explained that 88% of the population is omnivorous, to which must be added 7% of flexitarians who also eat meat. “There are only 4% vegetarians and 1% vegans, but if you read some media messages or listen to the noise on social networks it seems that the situation is just the opposite, when the reality is that the majority of the population consume meat ”.

It is important to build a reputation in the pig industry that is based on data and scientific truth. To do this, "we have to be able to make our truthful message reach and permeate society."

At INTERPORC, he explained, they work with doctors and scientists to remind society of the nutritional value of pork products because “eating meat is not a matter of opinion. It is a matter of biochemistry and health.”

In his speech, the director of INTERPORC also highlighted, among other important factors for the pig sector in 2023, the progressive decline in meat consumption in some markets, mainly the EU. “Although meat consumption in the world will grow this decade by 1.4%, in the EU it will drop by 0.5%. In fact, in Spanish households it has also fallen, although pork is the meat that has best resisted this setback.

In this sense, another factor, internationalization, becomes particularly important. 2022 has confirmed Spain as the second world pork exporter, a position achieved thanks to "our ability to diversify markets, which has led us to continue growing in the most competitive areas, mainly Asia", highlighted Herranz.

"This is so thanks to the quality of our products and the trust that our companies generate due to their seriousness in commercial relations." In addition, he concluded, "although we have decreased in China as expected after the recovery of its herd after African Swine Fever, the data shows that we have become strongly consolidated in that market and that it will continue to be the main destination of our exports”.

Herranz also pointed out that INTERPORC is actively working to open new areas such as Australia and that in this international effort they collaborate with organizations such as ICEX Spain Export and Investment and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, as well as other organizations such as LaLiga.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-02 03:26:53 | 2025-07-26 15:58:36 | Details Edit Delete | |
6208 | Danish Crown offers free industrial operator training to employees | For the first time ever, Danish Crown ensures that employees can be trained as industrial operators with pay during the course, just as the participants are guaranteed an industrial operator job afterwards. |
Danish Crown's workplaces are developing rapidly these years as the company significantly increases the amount of technology and automation in production. Therefore, in the future there will also be a need for other skills than there have been up to now.

Instead of hiring new people with those skills, for the first time ever, Danish Crown is offering the possibility for industrial operator training to all employees at the Danish processing factories and slaughterhouses, just as those involved are guaranteed an industrial operator job after the training at their current workplace.

"In the food industry, in the future we will only need more people who can combine food craftsmanship with handling robots or other forms of automation. If we are to achieve that goal, more people must make the leap from unskilled to skilled. Here, systematic training planning is needed, in collaboration within the company. It is beneficial for both the industry and the working life of the individual," says union secretary of the Food Federation, Per Hansen.

During the training, the employees are paid an average of their normal salary, just as Danish Crown also pays for board and lodging for those who live far away from the school and transport for the others.

"Employees with this combination of skills will be incredibly important in the slaughterhouses and processing factories of the future in Danish Crown. We see no reason to look for that outside the city first, when we have skilled employees who know how to work with food, but need to have the technical part built on top of their expertise," says Per Laursen, who is production director for the pig slaughterhouses in Danish Crown.

The training takes approximately two years for the employees, and they alternate between being at school at EUC Lillebælt in Fredericia and trying out the new skills in practice in industrial operator positions in Ringsted, Blans, Horsens, Vejle and Holsted respectively, where the 12 employees on the first team is off.

One of the participants is 26-year-old Mikkel Bigum, who before then worked as a butcher on the evening shift in Blans. When he saw the offer, he had no doubts.

"I think it is a fantastic opportunity, and a very nice offer from Danish Crown. Of course, the education prepares me better for working life, but I can also see that it makes very good sense for Danish Crown that I and others can supplement our professional skills with this type of competence as the amount of automation increases," says Mikkel Bigum.

Danish Crown experienced far more applicants than there was room for in the first team. Therefore, the next team will start at the beginning of September 2023, and it is expected that more teams will follow in the same style thereafter.
| 1 | Technology | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-03 00:25:41 | 2025-07-26 14:18:19 | Details Edit Delete | |
6207 | AHDB: Increase in EU pig prices | For the week ending 19 Feb, the EU-27 reference price for pigs stood at 195.44p/kg ( 1 GBP= 1.13 Eur), a gain of almost 18p compared to the price 4 weeks prior (week ending 22 Jan). In comparison, the UK reference price has remained relatively steady over the 4 week period, seeing an increase of just over 1p to stand at 206.51p/kg for the week ending 19 Feb. |
Looking at historical trends, EU pig prices typically see an uplift as spring approaches. Reports of tight supply in slaughter ready pigs on the continent have likely brought forward this price rise by a few weeks as processors try to match supply with demand.

Looking at the key EU producers, significant price increases have been seen across the board in the 4 weeks ending 19 Feb, except for Denmark. Danish pigs have seen a price decrease of 4p over the period, although there was a small uptick in the final week bringing the price to 151.56p/kg. This is the lowest price of the key producers by nearly 30p.

Prices for the other selected key nations are now at the highest on record. The Netherlands has seen the largest increase in the last 4 weeks, up almost 29p to sit at 180.73p/kg for the week ending 19 Feb. Germany has also seen prices rise by well over 20p to stand at 207.01p/kg in the same week, 0.50p higher than the UK reference price. France and Spain have seen prices increase by 20p to 196.70p/kg and 15p to 191.98p/kg respectively.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-03 00:20:01 | 2025-07-25 16:40:46 | Details Edit Delete | |
6206 | Brazilian meat exporters turn to neighboring countries to supply China | Two of the three exporting companies announced that they are redirecting Chinese meat orders to their plants in Argentina and Uruguay. The effort is to mitigate the damage caused by the self-suspension of Brazilian exports by these companies and the entire chain. |
Due to the possible atypical case of "mad cow", the Ministry of Agriculture voluntarily suspended protein shipments, as provided for in the agreement with China. It is now up to Beijing to give the green light for the resumption of business, and there is no deadline for that. In 2019 there were 13 days of waiting. In 2021, more than 100 days.

The main exporter of beef in South America, Minerva reported that it will meet the demand from China from its three plants in Uruguay and its unit in Argentina. With this, the company, which in 2022 registered record revenues of R$ 31 billion (1 BRL = 0,18 EUR), hopes to maintain its share in the Chinese market. Marfrig will export to China from its six units in the two neighboring countries.

China, the main destination for Brazilian beef, accounts for about 60% of the country's exports. Brazil was also China's top beef supplier last year, ahead of Argentina and Uruguay, which could boost their exports to China while Brazil remains on the sidelines. The same could happen to Australia if talks accelerate to ease Beijing's restrictions on Australian meat.

The export suspension is a blow to some of the world's top meatpackers, including JBS SA, Marfrig Global Foods and Minerva SA.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-03 00:15:32 | 2025-07-26 09:16:02 | Details Edit Delete | |
6205 | Dr. Frank Hiller to become the new CEO of Big Dutchman | After 31 years as CEO, Bernd Meerpohl decided together with the Supervisory Board and the family shareholders of Big Dutchman that the time is right for a change in top management of the Big Dutchman group. Dr. Frank Hiller will bring new and external stimuli to complement the stable and proven management team. With Bernd Meerpohl taking over as Chairman of the Supervisory Board, not only will this position in itself be secured, but Big Dutchman will visibly remain a family enterprise. |
"In the past decades, Bernd Meerpohl has shaped the development of Big Dutchman and set the course for the group’s future. He always had all stakeholders in mind and was incredibly committed and dedicated to advancing the family business. The Supervisory Board and the family shareholders want to thank Bernd for all the time and effort he invested in the company and the staff to make Big Dutchman the world leader in livestock farming technology. We are very happy that Bernd will continue to share his knowledge and remain responsible for the company as Chairman of the Supervisory Board, starting 1 January 2024 after a short hiatus. The outlook for our industry is complex, but promising. Against this backdrop, we have found an experienced and competent CEO in Dr.-Ing. Frank Hiller. He will successfully lead our globally active company in the next phase," says Jürgen Steinemann, current Chairman of the Supervisory Board.

Bernd Meerpohl explains: "Taking over my father’s responsibility as CEO 31 years ago was an honour, as was advancing the company for the benefit of our customers all over the world and for the benefit of our staff and their families. The Meerpohl family, my closest colleagues, the Supervisory Board and I believe that someone new should now take over the operational business of Big Dutchman to integrate new stimuli from the outside. Dr. Hiller’s grounded approach fits us very well. With his doctor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, he brings along a more than solid foundation. In the course of his career, which included positions with some of the leaders of the mechanical engineering industry, for example Meiller, Leoni and, most recently, as CEO of Deutz AG, Dr. Hiller has gained extensive knowledge and proved that he is a team player who is very capable of leading an international company. I would like to thank Jürgen Steinemann, the Chairman of our Supervisory Board, for actively accompanying me personally as well as Big Dutchman in general these past years. I am very pleased that he will remain part of the Supervisory Board as deputy chairman. Personally, I will continue to support the company in my new position, as much as I can and in close cooperation with Dr. Hiller."

Dr. Frank Hiller adds: "Bernd Meerpohl is a remarkable entrepreneur who has invested much energy and spirit to position Big Dutchman as the international, innovative market leader of an industry that sees its duty in helping to guarantee that the world’s population can be fed. I am looking forward to succeeding him as CEO and securing and advancing the market position of Big Dutchman, together with the Board of Management and all employees, and of course in close cooperation with Mr. Meerpohl as the new Chairman of the Supervisory Board."
| 1 | Technology | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-03 00:10:27 | 2025-07-26 07:59:17 | Details Edit Delete | |
6204 | Government must work with farmers, not against them | Internationally renowned greenhouse gas science communicator Dr Frank Mitloehner says the New Zealand Government must work with farmers to achieve climate goals, not against them. |
Dr Mitloehner is a professor at the Department of Animal Science at the University California, Davis, and specialises in measurements and mitigation of greenhouse gases.

He arrived in New Zealand last week on a trip funded by Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ).

B+LNZ has been calling on the Government to review New Zealand’s methane targets based on adopting a warming approach, and to start to report on the warming impact of different gases as well as total volume of emissions ahead of its review of methane targets in 2024.

During his time in New Zealand, Dr Mitloehner met with farmers, scientists working to reduce agricultural emissions, Government officials and MPs. He also gave public lectures at Lincoln and Victoria universities.

B+LNZ Chief Executive Sam McIvor says Dr Mitloehner’s visit proved invaluable in building understanding of the different impact gases are having on climate change.

"One of the objectives of the visit was to continue to build understanding of the science of methane as a short-lived gas and to encourage a focus on warming when setting methane targets," he says.

In his lectures and meetings with Government officials and MPs, Dr Mitloehner explained that methane only needs to be reduced and does not need to go to zero. He said targets for agricultural sectors across the world should aim to be climate neutrality*, not carbon zero.

As methane is a short-lived gas, it does not add additional warming if it is reducing, and if it is reduced sharply enough, it can reverse previous warming. Carbon dioxide, on the other hand, has to get to zero to not add additional warming and to be negative to reverse previous warming.

Dr Mitloehner’s lectures also covered his work with Californian farmers to reduce their agricultural emissions and how agriculture can be part of a climate solution.

California has a target of a 40 percent reduction in methane emissions from manure by 2030 and an objective to start to reduce enteric methane emissions once viable technologies are available.

Methane emissions from manure makes up nearly half of livestock methane emissions in California, while enteric methane emissions represent the rest.

Manure emissions are created by California’s feedlot systems that collect the manure in effluent ponds. In New Zealand nearly all of the methane emissions from agricultural production are enteric, created by belching. In California, enteric methane is not counted towards emissions reduction targets.

McIvor says that while the technologies currently being used in California are not suited to New Zealand, the principle of what Professor Mitloehner says is very relevant.

"A price should not be the primary mechanism to reduce emissions," he says.

"California has successfully reduced its methane emissions through using incentives to farmers to use new methane reducing technologies, rather than putting a price on emissions.

"Dr Mitloehner’s strong message to the Government was that it needs to work with farmers and not against them, and that a carrot approach was much more effective than the stick."

McIvor says the Government has been intent on putting a price on agricultural emissions after initially wanting to put agriculture into the Emission Trading Scheme (ETS), which would have been incredibly damaging.

"Working with other agricultural organisations we have been successful in keeping agriculture out of the ETS, but the quid pro quo was that agriculture had to come up with an alternative pricing framework."

Dr Mitloehner’s visit demonstrated that there are better ways to work with farmers to reduce emissions when the technology becomes available, says McIvor.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-03 00:05:47 | 2025-07-26 09:31:54 | Details Edit Delete | |
6203 | Multivac: Compact packaging solutions at Interpack 2023 | At interpack 2023 MULTIVAC will be showing practical and needs-based solutions for packing small and medium-sized batches, as well as complete processing and packaging lines for the food industry. |
These small-batch solutions enable hand-craft businesses and smaller processors to make the entry into automatic packaging - with the aim of achieving maximum flexibility and cost-effectiveness. In addition to chamber machines of different sizes, the exhibits will also include compact thermoforming packaging machines and traysealers.

“This year we are very consciously putting our smaller and more compact models centre stage as well. They are very versatile in their use, as well as being cost-effective, efficient, very sustainable, and a resilient link in virtually every production process,” emphasizes Dr Tobias Richter, Director and CSO of the MULTIVAC Group.

Line solution for thermoforming packaging

The heart of the line for applications in the Food service sector is the R 085 e-concept thermoforming packaging machine, which is designed for packing small batches very efficiently. This proven entry-level model can run sustainable materials as well as conventional flexible and rigid films. Another benefit: This compact allrounder requires only a small footprint, and it operates with electricity only, and does not need compressed air or cooling water. This means that it can be used very flexibly within the production area. In Düsseldorf the R 085 e-concept will be shown in conjunction with a Handtmann dosing system, which is used to dose food directly into the thermoformed packs.

Stand-alone machine for thermoforming packaging

The R 105 MF thermoforming packaging machine is an entry-level model for packing a wide range of food products, such as for example steaks or salmon cuts, in attractive MultiFresh™ vacuum skin packs. This enables maximum shelf life and perfect product presentation to be achieved even in small batches. The quality, freshness, colour and texture of the product are presented in a natural way, and the content is held without any tension within the pack. The special packaging materials, which are optimised for the MultiFresh™ process, are also available from MULTIVAC.

Semi-automatic and fully automatic tray packing in the smallest space

Sealing only, vacuum or skin packing, modified atmosphere packaging, or even trays with high product protrusion? The T 255 traysealer is a space-saving, free-standing unit, which enables many different types of tray packing to be produced on the one machine in small and medium-sized batches. The visitors to the MULTIVAC stand will be able to convince themselves during regular demonstrations of the die change, how highly flexible this efficient traysealer is, and how it offers maximum machine availability. The machine can be converted in a very short period of time and with just a few hand movements from producing MultiFresh™ packs to MAP packs.

The T 305 is the smallest fully automatic traysealer from MULTIVAC, which can be fully integrated into lines. It is way ahead in its class as regards output performance, and it can accommodate formats from one to four tracks. Thanks to its range of available loading areas, this allrounder can be perfectly matched to the individual production environment, and it can run trays up to a depth of 110 mm. Recently it has also become possible to have PaperBoard applications and MultiFresh trays with 50 mm product protrusion.

An optional DP 115 direct web printer from MULTIVAC Marking & Inspection is available for marking the packs. The film is printed by means of the thermal transfer process, and the printer is situated at the film infeed on the packaging machine.

Packaging in film pouches

With its B 425 compact chamber belt machine, MULTIVAC is showing a model, which offers a very high output, particularly when packing smaller products such as ham, cheese, poultry and fish. The main features of the machine are its durability, very easy operation and the highest level of hygiene. The new B 425 will also be appreciated by cost-conscious companies, who are looking for a higher product throughput when packing small products, since the 1,300 mm long sealing bar makes it possible to load many products. Another benefit of its compact design is the small space requirement of the machine, and this means that it can even be used in small production environments. When packing products on chamber belt machines, the filling of the film pouches and the loading of the machine are often a bottleneck in the process. By using the new MULTIVAC Pouch Loader (MPL) and MULTIVAC Pouch Rack (MPR), the loading of the chamber belt machine is performed semi-automatically, enabling a significant efficiency increase and cost reduction to be achieved. In Düsseldorf the chamber belt machine will be combined with a SE 320 shrink unit, which thanks to precisely controlled heat exposure produces shrink packs in a way that is particularly reliable and gentle on the product.

MULTIVAC tabletop machines are an ideal solution for the quick and easy packaging of smaller products. They can be used very flexibly due to their compact dimensions. They provide the highest output and also offer outstanding pack quality, even when operated in commercial non-stop mode. With its C 200 tabletop chamber machine, MULTIVAC is showing at interpack a proven model, which is also suitable for larger products, such as for example cheese portions, ham or fresh meat, thanks to its chamber size of 465 x 355 x 150/220 mm.

Flexible flowpacker for food products

The W 500 being shown by MULTIVAC is a universal flowpacking solution, which offers a high level of flexibility for packing a wide range of food products, and it supports the use of sustainable films and paper-based materials. The robust machine, which is built to MULTIVAC's Hygienic Design™, is characterised by its high level of efficiency and precision, as well as its user-friendliness, reliability, cost-effectiveness and high output. Precise servo drive technology ensures that maximum output and optimum process control are achieved. Products with a maximum width of 200 mm and a height of up to 120 mm can easily be packed - with or without a tray. The other features include the independent speed setting of the rollers for crease-free longitudinal sealing, the extremely reliable cross sealing thanks to precise and recipe-based control of sealing temperature and pressure, as well as an integrated gas analysis system for MAP packing with modified atmosphere.
When it comes to labelling or marking the packs on a flowpacker, MULTIVAC offers a wide choice of solutions. These range from inline labellers to direct web printers and even combined systems. All these solutions are characterised by their extremely compact construction and optimum hygiene features. They are perfectly matched to the MULTIVAC flowpacker in terms of their control technology and mechanical functions. A DP 207 printing solution will be shown at interpack on the W 500.
| 1 | Technology | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-02 00:01:04 | 2025-07-26 07:57:34 | Details Edit Delete | |
6202 | Spanish White Pork Sector: Decent work and economic growth | The Spanish white pork sector has very numerous, very professional and highly qualified human resources; with extensive experience in multiple types of activities and management systems in all types of geographical areas. |
From the Spanish Inter-professional Agri-Food Organization for White Pork (INTERPORC), as a non-profit entity made up of all sectors of the white pork value chain (production, transformation and commercialization), we can say that the white pork sector is committed with SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth).
This is precisely demonstrated by the number of employees the sector has: more than 415.000 people, including direct, indirect and induced jobs.
Thanks to its high degree of implantation in the rural environment, the sector is a backbone of the territory, fixes population and improves the quality of life of thousands of towns. In fact, 43% of Spanish pork farms, 45% of pork industries and 75% of the Spanish pork census are located in rural areas (populations of <5000 inhabitants).
This demonstrates the importance of a sector that has an extensive experience and specialization in the generation of activity and employment in rural areas.
From an economic point of view, it is a growth engine for the Spanish economy: represents 17.5% of final agricultural production and 42.7% of final livestock production, 17.22% of industrial GDP and represented 18.500 million euros of annual turnover. In addition, it generates €7.719.000 million thanks to pork exports.

Consequently, the pork sector is in a position to provide real, effective and practical support in the application of the different strategies designed to evolve towards a new "Food System Model" based on a powerful, sustainable rural environment that generates employment and effective in the fight against depopulation within the framework of the commitments of the European Green Deal.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-02 03:11:38 | 2025-07-26 06:33:13 | Details Edit Delete | |
6201 | Brazilian exporters project 750 million US dollars after action at Gulfood Dubai 2023 | Ended last Friday (February 24th), the biggest action ever carried out by Brazilian poultry in the Islamic market generated hundreds of millions of dollars in export business to Brazil. The information is from the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) which, in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), took dozens of agribusinesses in the sector to Gulfood 2023, the world's largest food fair focused on the halal market, held between February 20th and 24th, in Dubai (United Arab Emirates). |
According to the projections collected from the exporting companies participating in the action, the thousands of contacts made during the event should generate more than US$ 750 million in business in the next twelve months. In just the five days of the event, there were more than US$ 50 million in sales made by companies in the poultry, eggs and pork sectors (for non-Islamic buyers).

To reach these figures, ABPA and ApexBrasil increased by 20% the area destined for the Brazilian productive sector at the event, which had an infrastructure of more than 450 square meters. The space housed 22 agroindustries from the sector: Aurora Alimentos, Avenorte, Avivar, Bello Alimentos, BRF, C.Vale, Coasul, Copacol, Dália Alimentos, Granja Faria, GtFoods, Jaguafrangos, Lar Agroindustrial, Naturovos, Netto Alimentos, Pamplona Alimentos, Pif Paf, Somave, SSA, Villa Germania, Vossko and Zanchetta Alimentos. Seara Alimentos and Vibra Agroindustrial will also be at the event, with their own stands.

In addition to the structure for doing business, the space had a wide tasting area, serving omelettes and the traditional shawarma (a dish from the Arab culture) of chicken and duck meat. The objective, according to the ABPA, is to reinforce the quality and distinctive flavor of the Brazilian product with customers. According to ABPA, 5,100 shawarma and 1,700 omelettes were served during Gulfood.

The ABPA space at the event also received several actions with stakeholders. In one of them, there was a presentation of the Brazilian technical-sanitary staff, presented by the Secretary of Agricultural Defense of Brazil, Carlos Goulart, with the participation of stakeholders from the Islamic market. The association also received in its space the Secretary of Commerce and International Relations of the Ministry of Agriculture, Roberto Perosa, and the Ministry's special advisor, Carlos Ernesto Augustin.

The public at the event – known for its strong focus on decision-makers in the purchase of food products – also received more information about exporters and the agro-industrial chain in Brazil, through electronic and physical materials.

"The ABPA space was very popular in what was our seventeenth participation in Gulfood. Faced with an international scenario of pressure on the international food trade, importers from all over the world reinforced their conviction in Brazil's capacity to support the world demand for chicken meat. This was a notable behavior in the meetings we had during the five days of the event and reinforce the expectations of a positive year for poultry and pig farming in Brazil", analyzes the president of ABPA, Ricardo Santin.

Brazil is the world's largest exporter of chicken meat produced according to Islamic precepts ( halal) . Last year alone, 1.983 million tons were exported, generating US$ 3.869 billion in export revenues for Brazil. The United Arab Emirates are the largest importers, with 444.9 thousand tons imported in 2022.
| 1 | Events | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-02 00:20:05 | 2025-07-25 19:44:53 | Details Edit Delete |
