676 New Zealand's meat industry will benefit from the TPP agreement Beef and lamb producers are competing for a bigger market share in Japan as the tariffs on these products are going to be reduced.
Meat producers from New Zealand are expecting to take back the market share in Japan as the TPP agreement has been signed. Even if the country faced an unexpected blow in losing an agreement on the Vietnamese market back in November, the access to Japanese market it is seen as a victorious comeback after three years of disadvantage in front of Australian competitors.
For Dave Harrison, Beef and Lamb's advocacy, the TPP agreement represents a big gain for the New Zealand's meat industry. Since 2015, when Australia signed a free trade agreement with Japan New Zealand producers have been exposed to an 11% tariff disadvantage. "Over that period their market share has grown cumulatively by 1 billion dollars while ours has dropped by about 30 million dollars. We will be able to get back in there and hopefully get back some of those gains", explained Harrison, cited by Radio NZ.

Last year, Japan imported 810.000 metric tonnes of beef, Australia playing the dominant role in this market at 53% share, followed by the US with 42%. New Zealand's beef market share in Japan is about 3%.

    Market 2018-01-26 11:41:17 2025-12-04 03:33:41 Details Edit Delete
677 AI forces UK's authorities to extend the Prevention Zone measures The Welsh government is taking action a week after England's authorities imposed a similar decision.
An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) was introduced by the Welsh government in order to mitigate the risk of bird flu infection in the area. The measure is following a similar one imposed by England just a week ago.
"Although we have had, as yet, no findings of Avian Influenza in 2018, I consider this Prevention Zone and the requirement for enhanced biosecurity to be proportionate to the risk level faced in Wales. It is essential we take steps to protect our poultry industry, international trade and the wider economy in Wales", said Lesley Griffiths, the Welsh Government's Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs, according to Farming UK magazine.

Poultry breeders and owners of other captive birds are requested to check on their health and to inform quickly the authorities in case of any sign of disease. The H5N6 virus was discovered in wild birds crossing UK territory. 31 birds have been discovered carrying the virus in England which forced the authorities to implement the AIPZ measure. The level of risk is described as medium.

    Industry 2018-01-26 13:04:31 2025-12-02 14:23:21 Details Edit Delete
680 UN FAO calls for help in emergency campaign in South Sudan The organisation needs 7.5 million dollars in order to cover the vaccination of 30% of the country's livestock.
The UN FAO's emergency livestock vaccination campaign in South Sudan needs another 7.5 million dollars to get through nearly 9 million animals, representing 30% of the country's livestock as proposed. For now, FAO has managed to secure only a quarter of the funds needed for this operation. The campaign was scaled up by 50% compared to the target reached in 2017 of 6 million animals, informs the organisation.

So far, 300,000 animals were vaccinated against prevalent diseases such as black quarter, haemorrhagic septicaemia and anthrax, in Aweil state, in the north-west of the country, according to FAO officials.

"In most parts of the country, FAO and its partners are the main providers of vaccinations. We are trying to reach as many animals as possible now. If we wait for two more months, the rains will start taking over; half of the country will soon be completely cut off or extremely difficult to access, and a huge number of animals risk being trapped in an impossible situation", described the situation Serge Tissot FAO Representative in South Sudan.

Keeping animals alive and healthy is vital in a country where most of the population relies on livestock for their very survival, and half of the population is affected by hunger. Under the FAO's Emergency Livestock Response Programme, the organisation has set up a network of community-based animal health workers who reached a number of 1,000 trained animal health workers.

    Industry 2018-01-26 14:43:10 2025-12-03 15:10:39 Details Edit Delete

685 Cattle producers filed new evidence against USDA in a court trial

Ranch groups R-CALF USA and the Cattle Producers of Washington (CPoW) have presented a series of documents to the court in which they are trying to prove that USDA is allowing multinational meatpackers mislabel a significant volume of imported beef as “Products of the USA”.

The lawsuit filed against USDA and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue ha begun in June 2017 with the cattle producers claiming that the beef imported and sold to the American consumer as “Product of USA” has not gone to a substantial transformation in the United States processing plants, as required by law, informs R-Calf USA in a statement.

“It is disingenuous for the Administration to say it is encouraging consumers to buy American while it simultaneously directs its legal team to defend the multinational meatpackers’ fraudulent practice of putting a USA label on imported beef”, said the CEO of R-Calf USA, Bill Bullard.

In his defense, Secretary Perdue argued that imported beef is to be deemed and treated as domestic beef so long as the importing country’s food safety standards are equivalent to U.S. standards. Consequently, the Secretary allows multinational meatpackers to label imported beef as “Products of the USA” even if the imported beef receives only minor processing, such as unwrapping and rewrapping the package.

For the cattle producers though, this point of view is undermining the White House campaign for local product and a recent initiative to increase agriculture output in the US.

    Market 2018-01-28 08:01:26 2025-12-02 16:10:02 Details Edit Delete
687 Germans are eating less meat than 10 years ago The number of vegan consumers has doubled in this period. It now stands at 10% of the population.
Only 21% of Germans are eating meat on a regular daily diet shows a study conducted by Civey, reports Handelsblatt Global. Thanks to this new habits, meat consumption has dropped to 64 kilos a year from 69 in 2010.

Meat has been replaced by fruit and vegetarian food, according to the study. The shift in diet is seen as a reflection of changing lifestyles and influence from abroad.

Big companies have been forced to rethink the way they sell food by newcomers to the market, many of them family-run small and mid-sized enterprises. The industry of packaging had to adapt also in order to appeal to greater numbers of people eating on the go, and single people buying smaller portions of food.

Despite that, Germany still has a meat consumption above the average reported in EU, but the consumers are oriented now to organic products. At the same time, the vegan movement is slowly gaining momentum among the locals, vegetarians and vegans being represented now by 10% of the Germans, twice as many than reported in 2006.

At this moment, 1 in 10 new products released in Germany is labeled as vegan.

    Retail 2018-01-29 07:00:00 2025-12-03 22:38:36 Details Edit Delete
689 ASF risks in Europe aggravates concerns in the USA The situation in Poland, Germany and Denmark is under analysis.
The possibility of an African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in EU is raising concerns among the pork producers in the US as additional measures are considered to prevent such a situation in Poland, Germany and Denmark.

NPPC Chief Veterinarian Dr Liz Wagstrom and Director of International Trade Policy, Sanitary and Technical Issues Courtney Knupp last week joined pork producers on NPPC’s Trade Committee and its Animal Health and Food Security Committee in Denmark, Poland and Germany to explore the steps being taken to prevent or limit the spread of ASF to commercial pig production sites, informs National Pork Producers Council (NPPC).

All three EU State Members require traceability of animals and reporting of all animal movements, even if Denmark is not affected yet by the disease. Also, measures of increased biosecurity in ASF-positive zones and focus on surveillance of wild boar and dead domestic animals that have signs consistent with ASF, zoning/regionalization of areas with positive animals and ensuring that meat from animals in positive zones is not exported outside of the domestic market have been enforced in these countries.

The US pork industry representatives are expected to communicate their findings to their respective organizations, and conclusions also will be discussed with the working group for the Secure Pork Supply Plan. In the meantime, the risk of an ASF outbreak in Europe has been a topic included in the agenda of Green Week Berlin 2018, with EU representatives discussing the subject with the Russian counterparts.

    Industry 2018-01-29 10:22:04 2025-12-03 08:18:43 Details Edit Delete
690 EU-Mercosur trade agreement may not have any real opposition Beef producers from Ireland can't stand alone against the deal as the French industry is taking a step back.
The EU- Mercosur trade deal could enter in the final stage in the next 2 days, as the discussions between the European Commission representatives and those of Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay are scheduled to take place on January 31.

Despite the fact that some associations and officials from Member State governments have expressed their concerns about the disadvantages brought by an increased quota of agri-food products from the Mercosur region, the political games will have the final word, as mentioned Irish Times.

Sources from the European Commission suggested that Phil Hogan, the commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, is hesitating about signing an agreement under this form while Cecilia Malmstrom is willing to go further with it. Beef is one of the critical issues in this deal as the annual quota for imported beef is expected to go from 70.000 tonnes to 100.000. In fact, Mercosur representatives are asking for a 200.000 tonnes quota and there are voices that suggest that commissioner Malmstrom is willing to go beyond the ceiling of 100.000 tonnes.

Malmstrom has described the potential deal as having three times the value of the EU’s recent agreement with Japan. Mercosur looks like a closed market, with high tariffs and non-tariff barriers. Tariffs of 35% apply to cars, 20-35% to key machinery products and 18% to soaps and beauty products. In 2016, the EU exported goods there worth 42 billion euros and, in 2015, services worth 22 billion euros.

Ireland seems to be "the last man standing" against this deal, as France looks more interested in opening a new market for the automotive industry even at the risk of endangering some of its beef producers. Officials of Copa and Cocega association are also requested caution in signing a trade deal that will disrupt some businesses in the agro-food industry in Europe. "A Joint Research Centre (JRC) report shows a potential trade deal could cost the EU agricultural sector over 7 billion euros", claims Pekka Pesonen, secretary-general of Copa and Cocega.
    Market 2018-01-29 12:01:59 2025-12-04 11:24:36 Details Edit Delete
691 Halal meal kits, a new trend for Muslims in the UK Muslim meat consumers are invited to try new options offered by the market.
The Islamic economy is expected to reach 1.93 trillion USD in the next five years, according to a Thompson Reuters report on the "State of the Global Islamic Economy". Great Britain which is home to about 3 million Muslims is setting new trends and some of those are reflecting a new approach in the retail and meat industry, reports Arab News agency.
Halal meat boxes nicely wrapped for taking at home seems to be one of this, as Walli Datoo, co-founder of Halalnivore, an online gourmet halal meat delivery service, predicts.
"We are planning to experiment with a hybrid model between what we already do and a service that similar to a 'Hello Fresh' or 'Gousto' meal box delivered with halal ingredients", said Datoo.

He also believes that the restaurants are going to diversify the halal offerings in order to set themselves apart from the competition. "Casual dining places (burgers and wraps) will be getting really creative with their menus and moving away from the traditional kebab shop and plain burger offerings", predicts the entrepreneur.

His point of view is shared by Noman Khawaja, co-founder of Haloodies, a UK premium food retailer that sells prepared halal meats. "Consumer behaviour will also be of key interest to businesses", considers Khawaja how expects that the online orders to increase in 2018.

His company has already launched a halal meal snack '2Go" in 2017 and Khawaja confirms that other products will be launched this year. The trend is expected to be seen also in cuisine halal restaurants as the UK has been running different campaigns to attract tourist from the Middle East.
    Retail 2018-01-29 14:09:47 2025-12-04 10:55:13 Details Edit Delete

Attorneys are now expecting approval from law courts across the country to open a huge lawsuit against Shufersal, Yeinot Bitan and Rami Levy supermarkets after different veterinary studies showed that the chickens sold in this stores were infected with Salmonella, reported Food Safety News, citing local media.

According to the data revealed by the studies, 55% of the chickens from Shufersal and Yeinot Bitan supermarkets were found tainted, while Rami Levy was cited having a ratio of 27% chickens contaminated with Salmonella.

Clients claim that the grocery chains are selling contaminated chickens without providing warnings that they may be infected. Salmonella can be destroyed by boiling the meat infested at 70 degree Celsius but the danger remains present for different segments of consumers.

"Salmonella can harm and hurt my children, whose internal defences may not be able to beat back the germs. 695 New hygiene regulation on poultry farms in Korea The officials think that this is the proper way to prevent outbreaks of highly contagious bird flu.
Last year, a series of avian influenza and sales of eggs contaminated with harmful insecticides have stirred up the concerns of the Korean consumers.

The new regulation requires local farms to give space to layer chickens larger than 0.075 square meters, up from the current 0.05 square meter, informs The Korea Herald. New rules will be enforced from July to all the new facilities while the existing ones are allowed until 2025 to implement the new measure.

Most local poultry farms raise egg-laying hens in battery cages smaller than an A4 sheet of paper, barely over the minimum requirement. According to experts keeping birds in such close confinement enables the disease to spread rapidly.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs also aid that will support the merger of small poultry farms to maintain at least 500 meters between them and prohibit the opening new ones within 3 kilometers from winter sites of migratory birds, which are believed to be the cause of avian influenza strains being found in the country.
    Industry 2018-01-30 07:03:31 2025-12-04 08:33:50 Details Edit Delete
696 Post-Brexit risks start worrying Welsh meat producers Without a trade deal between Great Britain and EU exports to the mainland are in danger.
Wales officials start paying more attention to the Brexit talks development. Rhys Llywelyn, Market Development Manager for Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC), draw a perfect picture of the risks lying ahead in case of a hard Brexit.
"Exports are very important for our industry as they help to maintain prices during times of peak production. In the case of lamb, in particular, it also gives the chance to achieve carcase balance, with export customers preferring different cuts to UK consumers. The uncertainty creates a major dilemma for HCC in prioritising where to spend scarce resources. If a trade agreement is reached, maintaining our existing relationships with retailers and foodservice companies in Europe will be imperative.

However, if there’s no deal, the prospect of high tariffs to export to the EU under WTO rules means that we must also prioritise developing newer markets further afield, and also make more of the domestic market", explained Rhys at a meeting with local farmers.

PGI Welsh Lamb and PGI Welsh Beef are two iconic meat brands from Wales, but no matter how appreciated are there is no open door for those two products to enter another market unless the Uk sign a trade agreement with that particular country. "We’ve been helped by support from the Welsh Government for our enhanced export plan, but this is a challenging period. Free Trade Agreements, and also obtaining market access to countries where we currently don’t have permission to export red meat such as Japan and Saudi Arabia, are out of our hands", admitted Rhys.

    Industry 2018-01-30 10:03:22 2025-12-03 06:03:36 Details Edit Delete

701 China's pork market is set to grow for at least a decade Import volumes are expected to grow constantly over the next 10-15 years.
The growing population of China, constant growth of middle income and limited domestic resources for growing pigs are some of the factors that indicate an expansion of pork market based on imports, predicts Lorne Tannas, General Manager China for Genesus.
According to a report recently released by the company, we are going to see 10 to 15 years of very good pork price in China. At this point, China has limited resources to raise pigs and all of the new policies that Beijing is promoting in this sector are meant to favour only the big producers.
"Instead we will continue to see China buy value-added pork where the value is done in countries with the needed resources to do this. China just doesn't have these things to raise the pork internally. Several key areas in China have been chosen for expansion. This is good for large companies, but more difficult for small to mid-size companies for hog expansion. It should be noted these influences will only prolong the good prices. Growth will be slow but positive, in production performance, meat quality and safety.", considers Tannas.

(Photo source: Flickr/K-State Research and Extension)

    Market 2018-01-31 07:00:38 2025-12-04 09:38:08 Details Edit Delete
702 Adultered seafood spoted on US market Two warning letters were sent by FDA to companies from Alabama and Indonesia.
Food and Drug Administration has issued two warning letters addressed to companies based in Alabama (USA) and Indonesia for serious violations of U.S. law, specifically the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation. 703 Australian cattle breeders are facing the effects of drought The global beef market is expecting pressure from US and Brazil producers.
Australian cattle producers are rebuilding their herds but the increase will be quite small, only 3%, in the adult slaughter segment, as foreseen by MLA experts. That means the total cattle production will advance to 7.4 million head in 2018. A dry season registered across many parts of Australia saw a higher than expected turn-off in the second half of 2017, temporarily halting the herd rebuilding efforts of producers in affected areas.
“This has meant many young cattle were pushed into feedlots in 2017 due to lack of decent pasture – stock that otherwise would have been finished in the paddock and come to market in 2018. If the three-month rainfall outlook from the Bureau of Meteorology comes to fruition for February to April, it is likely to see tight supplies in certain regions, particularly through the mid part of the year", predicts Scott Tolmie, MLA’s Market Intelligence Manager.
The effects of the drought are to be seen in a drop of the number of cattle on feed. "A decline towards the 850,000 to 950,000 head mark is expected, driven by higher grain prices combined with a growing gap between feeder and grain finished cattle prices", believes Tolmie.
At the same time, the global market is going to be a battlefield between Australian, American and Brazilian beef exporters as the last two are expected to increase production. "Australian beef exports will be competing in a global market with a very strong supply of beef. With the increased supply, global beef prices should come under pressure, reinforcing the need for Australia to continually position itself as a superior supplier of high-quality product", said MLA’s Market Intelligence Manager.
Australia's beef exports are expected to reach 1.04 million tonnes, a slight improvement compared to 2017, below the numbers reported in 2013-2015 but bigger than any year prior to 2013.

    Industry 2018-01-31 10:15:42 2025-12-02 07:12:35 Details Edit Delete
705 Meat taxation could become a reality in 5 to 10 years A new report from FAIRR suggests that a tax on the meat consumption could be enforced in the near future due to governments effort to comply with health and environmental policies.
Meat could be the subject of taxation in the next 5 to 10 years according to a report released by FAIRR initiative. Farm Animal Investment Risk and Return (FAIRR) is an initiative that informs and advises investors about the risks and opportunities related to the industrial livestock production sector and the latest report "The Livestock Levy" argues that a tax on meat could be imposed by the governments around the world as they are trying to comply with health and environmental policies.

"On the current pathway, we may well see some form of meat tax emerge within five to 10 years. There are huge opportunities in the market. If we can start replacing meat protein with a plant-based protein that has the same look, taste and feels as meat, where real red-blooded meat eaters are happy to dig into a burger that is plant-based, we are changing the world", considers Maria Lettini, FAIRR director, cited by Big Think magazine.

From one point of view, meat consumption in excess could increase the risk of disease or death and the industrial livestock production is considered to be harmful to the environment. Meat consumption has risen 500% between 1992 and 2016, and the upward trend is likely to continue, according to FAIRR experts.

Many countries have already taken preliminary steps by cautioning the public about the dangers hidden in excessive consumption of animal protein, especially red meat and processed meat. Even China, despite the continuous growth of the meat market, has an updated Dietary Guideline that recommends a reduced consumption of meat to 40 -70 g a day. Representatives from National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) and market analysts are expressing their concerns about the trade wars and the dissolution of NAFTA agreement, reports Reuters.
"Without a doubt, our biggest concern is the trade situation", mentioned Steve Meyer, an NPPC consultant. Mexic and Canada are part of NAFTA agreement and also represents the first and fourth destination for US pork exports by volume. NAFTA is under renegotiations for almost half a year but there is no progress in discussions and many analysts are concerned that the U.S. could withdraw from the agreement.

On the other hand, a war trade with China could start at any point due to the political differences between Washington and Beijing. "We live in an interconnected world. And when you put your thumb in someone’s eye, they’re likely try to jab back and put their thumb in your eye", described the situation John Ginzel, an analyst at Lynn Group.
The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) is seeing China as an important market even if pork muscle-cut exports trended lower in 2017 as China’s domestic pork production increased. Last year, the US pork exports were on a record pace, with volumes from January through November 2017 of 2.23 million tonnes, worth $5.9 billion. That was up from 2.09 million tonnes, worth $5.4 billion, for the same period in 2016, according to USMEF.
At the end of 2017 US Department of Agriculture reported 73.2 million hogs on U.S. farms, the biggest number since 1943. 25% of the pork production in the USA is exported.

    Market 2018-02-01 11:26:18 2025-12-03 23:04:56 Details Edit Delete
