5543 UK meat has a great opportunity in online In 2021, online’s share of grocery sales plateaued at 10.3%, up 3.9 percentage points (%pts) on pre-pandemic levels (2019) according to an AHDB analysis. However, its growth is predicted to accelerate with share hitting 11.2% in 2027, accounting for £1 in every £9 spent on grocery (IGD, UK Channel Forecasts, June 2022). This will be driven by channel innovation, new fulfilment capacity, expansion of rapid delivery services and an appeal among budget conscious consumers. 72% of shoppers buy groceries online because they find it easier to control their spending (AHDB, Online Meat Shopper Journey, 2019), resonating with the current cost of living crisis.
Undoubtedly the pandemic had a huge impact on online grocery shopping with the number of households using the channel increasing by 11%pts at the peak in 2020, according to Kantar. The channel typically over indexes among family shoppers but the pandemic bought in a new older shopper. Since then, penetration has reached saturation, remaining at 39% in 2021. However, among those already shopping online, the frequency of grocery shops is increasing (an average of 22 times online in the year), with an average spend of £71 per shop. In the last year, meat, fish and poultry (MFP) sold online has been worth £2.6bn, accounting for 12.2% of total MFP sales (Kantar, 52 w/e 15 May 22). It is a particularly important category to drive higher spend due to its price point.

Sales of MFP online have been boosted by the increase in shopper numbers with volumes up 57% compared to pre-pandemic (Kantar, 12 we 17 April 2022). However, MFPs growth online is slowing faster than total grocery and as yet some MFP categories do not achieve their fair share of the online market. Fish, pork and added value have done particularly well online versus pre-pandemic, with promotional support boosting these categories. As shopping online naturally means shoppers can’t interact with products (56% claim they find it hard to buy meat online because they can’t see it according to AHDBs latest research), higher priced proteins and cuts, like lamb roasting and beef marinades, under perform online.

Therefore, for meat to reach its full potential online the category needs to better engage shoppers through improving the shopper experience.

    Industry adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2022-06-30 07:23:45 2025-08-06 05:33:54 Details Edit Delete
2257 Brazil to export bovine and poultry genetic material to Saudi Arabia Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) has announced this week that the country has received approval to export bovine and poultry genetic material to Saudi Arabia.
Authorities from Saudi Arabia have approved the International Animal Health certificate models developed by Brazil for its bovine and poultry genetics. Saudi Arabia has thus authorized the Brazilian imports of fertile eggs, day-old chicks, in vivo bovine embryos, in vitro embryos and bovine semen.

The sanitary negotiations between Brazil and Saudi Arabia started earlier last year with a market prospecting action launched by MAPA which identified "a business opportunity to export these commodities to the Saudi market".

Minister Blairo Maggi stressed the importance of Saudi Arabia as Brazil's trading partner, which imported more than US $ 2 billion worth of Brazilian agribusiness products in 2017. In addition, he stressed that the opening of new markets helps diversify the tariff and contributes to reaching the goal of 10% of Brazil's share in the world market for agricultural products.

The director of MAPA's Department of Animal Health, Guilherme Marques, added that Brazil's successive market openings with Saudi Arabia are due to the country's international recognition for its poultry and bovine genetics.

"The level of biosafety implemented by establishments producing Brazilian genetics and poultry lineages allows them to develop products with quality and productivity," said Marques. "The health advances of the last decade were recognized by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) last May as a country free of foot-and-mouth disease with vaccination. Also, Brazil has never had any cases of avian influenza."
    Industry 2018-11-28 12:27:38 2025-08-06 05:34:03 Details Edit Delete

3818 US pig market close to collapse? "The virus has decimated our industry", cries National Pork Producers Council President Howard Roth.
Pig producers in the US are facing a collective $5 billion loss for the remainder of the year due to coronavirus crisis. Despite the fact that the federal government announced a series of measures meant to support small businesses, 25% of the hog producers in the country are not eligible for the financial aid due to restrictive conditions imposed by the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Payroll Protection Program (PPP).
Specifically, PPP eligibility is determined by a positive farm profit in the calendar year 2019, or the last 12 months. For many pork producers, 2019 was not profitable as they bore the brunt of trade retaliation in China and Mexico, among two of the largest export markets. Using SBA’s restrictive language, an estimated one-quarter of the US hog industry is automatically disqualified from applying to the program, said the National Pork Producers Council in a press release.
“Our hog farmers are underwater through no fault of their own,” said National Pork Producers Council President Howard “A.V” Roth, a pork producer from Wauzeka, Wisconsin. “Hog farmers were at the tip of the trade retaliation spear in 2018 and 2019, losing $20 off the price of every hog. In 2020, they were forecast to make a $10 profit on every hog, until the COVID-19 crisis hit. The virus has decimated our industry and for SBA to unfairly punish pork producers and deny them access to this program is adding insult to injury.”

“We urge SBA to expeditiously remove this arbitrary restriction and allow our hog farmers, deemed essential throughout this pandemic, to access this vital program,” Roth added. In his opinion, US pork producers desperately need significant and immediate government aid or else many generational family farms will go bankrupt. At this time, the industry is also confronted with severe disruptions in the supply chain which reduced the processing capacity by 32%.
    Industry 2020-04-28 11:11:07 2025-08-06 05:34:32 Details Edit Delete
4585 Israel increases livestock imports by 51%
Israel has increased its livestock imports for the first quarter of the year. 207,214 calves and lambs arrived at the country’s ports, a number substantially larger than the period January-March of 2020 (136,983 animals). Last year, a total of 601,741 animals arrived in Israel on live shipments, 90,000 less than in 2019, which stands for a historical record in livestock imports.
Israel is the fourth-biggest beef and veal consumer in the OECD, after Brazil, the US and Argentina, with annual per capita beef consumption in 2018 standing at 20.5 kilograms and totaling 137,000 tonnes.
The figures in live animal imports are stirring protests from activists, such as the animal rights organization Animals Now. “The dizzying increase in the number of live shipments proves that the minister of agriculture shows contempt for the state comptroller and the Israeli public. While 86% of Israelis support legislation to stop live shipments, the Agriculture Ministry is taking advantage of the political situation. By 2021 live shipments should already have been history,” the organization said in a statement, quoted by the Times of Israel newspaper.
The Economy Ministry has gradually increased quotas for duty-free imports of chilled meat. Last year, permits were given to import more than than 21,000 tons of it — 17,500 tons under duty-free import quotas and the rest according to bilateral agreements. Nevertheless, this is just a small drop in the "ocean" of meat consumption in the country. The market for the shipping, fattening and slaughter in the country is controlled by two companies: Tnuva and Dabbach.
    Market 2021-04-05 12:28:12 2025-08-06 05:34:38 Details Edit Delete
4119 Hog prices in the US have doubled ASF in Germany and strong demand from China is improving the market conditions.
The cash hog prices have more than doubled since the end of July. The backup of hogs have been eliminated and demand for the pork is on the rise, announced Allan Bentley, USA Sales at Genesus Genetics. "Currently, the cutout value is just under $90. That leaves plenty of margin for packers to continue to chase the hog prices higher. This is usually not the season for an increase, however, nothing about this year is normal. I usually like to advise taking advantage of December hogs when they approach $66 but I think we have some more upside at this time. Demand from China is up and the disconnect between futures and cash hogs could be factored in pushing prices even higher," he explained.
However, packers in the US are reacting slowly to this market reality and are trying to protect their margins. "They still feel they are in the driver's seat although that is changing as they are struggling to buy open market pigs at a lower cost as they normally can this time of year…but then again this is 2020 so who knows what could happen! Packers, or for that matter, feeder pig buyers like to negotiate in the 4th quarter as it gives them the upper hand with seasonal low prices. It is my belief that sellers will be in the driver seat this year," added Mr Bentley.
    Industry 2020-09-25 08:23:01 2025-08-06 05:34:39 Details Edit Delete

8068 China will investigate beef imports as oversupply squeezes prices China will launch an investigation into beef imports, according to Reuters, as the world's biggest meat importer and consumer grapples with an oversupplied market that has sent domestic prices to multi-year lows.
Any trade measures to try to reduce beef imports would hit China's largest suppliers, Brazil, Argentine and Australia.

China's total beef imports reached $14.2 billion in 2023, surging from $8.2 billion in 2019, customs data show. Brazil accounted for 42% of the total trade value, followed by Argentine at 15% and Australia at 12%.

The inquiry will focus on fresh beef, cold beef, head of beef and frozen beef imported between Jan. 1, 2019 and June 30, 2024, the ministry said in a statement, adding that it followed an application by the China Animal Husbandry Association and other cattle and livestock groups.

The applicants said a sharp increase in import volumes over the period had "seriously damaged" China's domestic industry, the ministry said.

Beef imports in 2023 were almost 65% higher than in 2019, it said, with imports in the first half of 2024 more than double those in the first half of 2019.

The ministry said imports of the products under investigation accounted for 30.9% of the Chinese market.

Meat prices in China, including pork, beef, and poultry have declined as shoppers, grappling with a slowing economy, buy less.

"Most beef cattle farms in China are in a loss-making situation," the China Animal Husbandry Association was reported saying in a state media report. "The impact of a large amount of imported beef is undoubtedly adding insult to injury."

The price of beef has fallen to its lowest level in the last five years, and the price of live cattle has fallen to the lowest in the last 10 years, the association said.

Average wholesale beef prices have declined 22% to 59.82 yuan ($8.20) a kilogram in late December from 77.18 yuan two years ago, agriculture ministry data showed.

The Brazilian government said in a statement that it will work over the coming months to demonstrate that the beef Brazil exports to China is "complementary" to Chinese beef output and does not harm the Asian country's industry in any way.

"The Brazilian government reaffirms its commitment to defending the interests of Brazil's agribusiness while respecting the sovereign decisions of our top trade partner," it added.

Beijing in June sought to contain prices by asking farmers to limit and optimise the size of their beef cattle herd, but prices remain in decline amid a surge in imports, particularly from Argentine.

Beef imports from the South American producer during the first 11 months of 2024 rose 10% from the same period in 2023 to 533,005 metric tons.

"The industry reflects that excessive beef imports have caused substantial damage to my country's beef cattle industry," China Animal Husbandry Association said in the report.

"The industry strongly calls on the country to take control measures on imported beef to protect farmers' livelihoods and the industry's security," it said.

China imported 2.6 million tons of the targeted beef products between January and November. In calendar year 2019, China imported just 1.66 million tons.

The investigation is expected to conclude within eight months, although it could be extended in special circumstances. It is not targeted at specific countries or regions, does not distinguish the origin of products, and will not affect normal trade while under way, the commerce ministry said.

China is also considering trade restrictions on imports of dairy and pork from the European Union, although in those cases, the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigation are a tit-for-tat response against bloc's tariff plan for China-made electric vehicles, analysts have said.
    Industry adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2025-01-06 02:27:41 2025-08-06 05:35:00 Details Edit Delete

1412 Chicken meat is the leader on Australian market but with no substantial gains Low prices of chicken are no guarantee of big profits for the producers compared with beef, lamb or pork, argue an expert from Australian Country Choice.
Chicken meat consumption has surpassed beef consumption in Australia's retail system thanks to low prices, $5/kg of chicken compared to $30/kg of beef, but that doesn't count when the value is the main criteria. In fact, this barrier of $5/kg of chicken has never bee broken in the last 16 years.
Poultry industry sector has registered a growth in volumes by reducing costs through operational efficiencies. Nevertheless, the average retail price of chicken goes flat line while beef, pork, lamb has climbed during the last 12 months, informs Beef Central.
For the last two decades, the beef industry has realized an investment of more than $100 million in meat science for the purpose of assuring high-quality beef experience for its clients and the results are paying off, according to David Foote, CEO of Australian Country Choice.
"It has certainly been an advantage to get clients to pay more. If we have canvass around this room, 10 years ago there was a 50% chance you have a crap piece of steak at your favourite restaurant. 2667 Swedes have reduced their meat intake for second year in a row After they've hit a peak in meat consumption in 2016, Swedish consumers have reduced their meat intake by 5%.
Meat consumption has dropped in Sweden for the second year in a row, according to statistics released by the Swedish Board of Agriculture. On average, Sweden's meat consumption decreased by 2.2 kg per person in 2018, which led to a drop of 6% in the last two years.
According to the board, the change is due partly to prevailing food trends, but also to Swedes' increasing awareness of sustainability issues. "Everyone knows today that meat production contributes more to greenhouse gases than vegetable production," Asa Lannhard-Oberg, an agricultural policy analyst at the Swedish Board of Agriculture, mentioned at Swedish Television (SVT).
Swedes have increased their meat intake in the last three decades to reach a peak of 87.7 kg per person in 2016. 1822 VASEP: Pangasius exports to Brazil set to recover this year The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) expects the country's pangasius exports to Brazil to increase in the second half of 2018 and sees a great potential for Vietnamese pangasius in this South American market.
The association's outlook for 2018 is positive, although in the first five months of this year, Vietnamese pangasius exports were down 31.9% from the same period last year, reaching a total value of $34.1 million.

Still, from 2008 to 2017, Vietnam has reported a continuous growth for its pangasius exports to Brazil in terms of turnover, but it fluctuated from $114.8 thousand in 2008 to $104.7 million last year.

"In 2012, sales to Brazil only accounted for 4.3% of Vietnam's pangasius export volume and held as the 6th rank. But in 2013, those to Brazil picked up 6.7% of Vietnam's pangasius export turnover and ranked the 4th behind the US, the EU and ASEAN. While pangasius exports to big markets faced difficulties, exports to Brazil in 2013 recorded the good growth," VASEP's analysis read.

Furthermore, Vietnam exported pangasius worth $104.7 million to Brazil in 2017, up 54% over the previoys year. VASEP says that this was considered as a potential market of Vietnam with the highest growth in the year.

Although, in the first half of 2018, pangasius exports to Brazil declined, however, VASEP explains that with low level glazing and high quality, pangasius products remain popular to Brazilian customers.
Therefore, VASEP expects Brazil to be a potential market with the good growth in the last months of the year.
    Industry 2018-08-27 10:27:30 2025-08-06 05:35:20 Details Edit Delete

Since 2010, Malaysia is confronted with a decline of its cattle herd, which increased the country's dependence on livestock imports from Australia or Thailand or on water buffalo meat imports from India.
At the same time, Pakistan has promoted the livestock sector, now considered to be a considered central component in its agricultural sector. In 2017, the halal meat sector was estimated at about $600 billion. For the last few years, annual growth of meat production showed elevated trends. The meat production has risen to 3.873 million tons in 2016 compared to 3.696 and 3.531 in 2015 and 2014, respectively. Among exports, Pakistani mainly exports red meat that is annually growing by 30%, ", said the analysts.
Meanwhile, Malaysia is to see a further decline of its cattle herd and, according to Ben Santoso, a Rabobank Singapore food and agribusiness analyst, the country's beef imports will reach 90% of the domestic consumption by 2022.
    Market 2019-03-22 13:13:07 2025-08-06 05:35:28 Details Edit Delete
