1707 | South Korean pork imports up 15% in H1 | South Korean pork imports were up 15% year-on-year for the first half of 2018, at 294,400 tonnes. |
Bethan Wilkins, analyst at AHDB, says the unexpected import growth has perhaps been supported by inconsistent growth in domestic production.

USDA forecasts had anticipated a 3% growth in South Korean pork production in 2018, and indeed for the year to June, slaughterings have been 4% higher year-on-year.

However, after a strong performance in January, slaughterings since have actually been quite variable, and average only 2% above year earlier levels for February-June.

The US remained the dominant supplier of pork to South Korea, with volumes increasing by a third on year earlier levels to reach 107,600 tonnes. Germany and Spain also remained the second and third largest suppliers, shipping 56,200 tonnes and 36,700 tonnes respectively. However, while this was an 11% growth on 2017 levels for Spain, German shipments were actually back around 1%.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-08-03 06:58:18 | 2025-08-15 10:41:42 | Details Edit Delete | ||

5622 | South-Africa suspends anti-dumping duties for poultry products | The South African poultry industry is surprised by the announcement made by Minister Ebrahim Patel of the Department Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) to suspend the implementation of definitive anti-dumping duties against Brazil, Denmark, Ireland, Poland and Spain for a period of 12 months. The Minister has shown his support for anti-dumping measures in the past, and implemented provisional duties against those countries listed for a period of 6 months, which lapsed on 14 June 2022. |

The International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) in their latest findings, recommended to the Minister that it would be appropriate to implement anti-dumping duties against the mentioned countries. The local poultry industry is sensitive to the plight of cash-strapped consumers, and understands that food price inflation can negatively impact South Africa’s population. However, poultry producers also feel that the Minister’s announcement flies against the spirit of the Poultry Sector Masterplan (Masterplan), which specifically listed tariff measures as an important pillar to put a stop to dumping. As such, the decision calls into question the trust all have invested in the Masterplan process, as the latest decision seems to demonstrate that dumping is “okay”, even if for only a period of 12 months.

The decision will not assist the country’s efforts towards localisation, job creation, transformation plans, investment or developing the rural economy. In fact, it may actively cause harm and will certainly disrupt industry investment plans for the foreseeable future.

The Minister attributes the suspension on the implementation of the anti-dumping duties against the aforementioned countries on rising food costs, and the potential impact on poultry prices.

Rising food prices in South Africa (and globally) are being driven by global fundamentals in the soft commodity markets (most notably high Brent crude oil prices, demand on corn for ethanol production in the US, global weather phenomena, global supply and demand dynamics, and more importantly, Russia’s war in Ukraine that has led to lower levels of production in Ukraine and the inability for that country to export their crops – negatively impacting global coarse grain prices).

The South African Poultry Association firmly believes that it is a misnomer to think the lack of anti-dumping tariffs will assist the consumer; the Minister’s announcement merely provides the importers a reprieve for 12 months, and any “cheap” chicken imports simply goes into the pocket of the importer as healthy margins. No evidence exists that dumped chicken is sold by the importers at a low price to the consumer, and once again the importers will capitalise on the opportunity by actively participating in unfair trade practices.

Already, total poultry imports exceed the volumes produced by South Africa’s largest local producer. Dumping creates a nice revenue stream for global producers elsewhere in the world looking to get rid of their secondary poultry cuts, and creates jobs in other countries. Dumping doesn’t help South African consumers or farmers, according to tha association, in fact, dumping can jeopardise food security.

The local industry is currently subsidising poultry selling prices as the inability to fully recover record high feed input costs, fuel and energy costs erodes margins in a market characterised by record levels of unemployment and dwindling disposable income. One of the primary objectives of the Masterplan was to increase the level of locally produced chicken in consumption figures, and reduce the level of poultry imports to an acceptable level. To date, the industry has invested Rand 1.5 billion in expanding local processing capacity in support of the Masterplan. This investment in South Africa’s Agri-processing sector has seen the industry create more than 1,500 new jobs in support of the local economy. Emerging farmers have spent more than Rand 600 million to build new farms to support the increase in capacity at a time when input costs are against the industry on the back of global macro-economic issues. Unfortunately, not all the available new capacity has been filled with chicken volumes, and the suspension on the implementation of the anti-dumping duty now threatens the industry as capacity will stand idle.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2022-08-05 04:21:56 | 2025-08-15 11:56:53 | Details Edit Delete | |

4304 | Sow herd in China is 13% below pre-ASF crisis | Pre-ASF sow numbers may not be needed to produce pre-ASF amounts of pig meat, warns AHDB analyst. |
The recovery in the Chinese pig herd had added 7 million sows in the last 12 months. Data from the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Areas indicates that the reproductive sow herd numbered approximately 26 million head in October, up from approximately 19 million a year ago. The same data indicates that the sow herd was over 30 million when ASF was discovered, having been in decline for some years.
Nevertheless, the numbers may not be so important as the recovery in pork production may increase faster thanks to more productive and biosecure units. "China had already been moving away from “backyard” pig farming before the ASF outbreak, and the management of the disease will ultimately accelerate this progress. Improvements in supply chain logistics are also reported to be taking place. Pre-ASF sow numbers may not be needed to produce pre-ASF amounts of pig meat," explained Duncan Wyatt, Lead Analyst - Red Meat, AHDB. Production in China is expected to grow by 9% in 2021 as sow herds are rebuilt following the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the country, according to the latest USDA outlook. "If the USDA forecast were to materialise, although import demand will remain higher than usual in the near term, China’s pork imports would fall by 6% to 4.5 million tonnes in 2021. This would put an estimated 300,000 tonnes of pork back onto the world market," added Mr Wyatt.
China is aiming to become 95% self-sufficient in pork over the next couple of years.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-11-30 11:02:10 | 2025-08-15 00:59:05 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4289 | Sow herd liquidation to start in the EU | Prices for pig meat are dropping fast due to Coronavirus, German-Asia export market closure. |
A sow herd liquidation is about to start in several EU member states as prices are dropping fast due to Coronavirus and German-Asia export market closure. ASF in Germany has created a downward spiral that is impacting Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark. German pork is now shipped mostly in the EU single market after access to major Asian markets such as China, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines was lost.
"On September 2, prior to ASF the Germany Slaughter Price was €1.47/kg carcass, last week German slaughter price was €1.19/kg. The difficulties of the Euro slaughter market can be seen in Danish feeder pig prices. PRRS Positive 60 lb. feeder pigs averaged 436 Dkk the last 52 weeks (€58.5), last week they were 144 Dkk (€19.35). We expect liquidation in the European sow herd over coming months, as Coronavirus, German-Asia export market closure and higher feed prices lead producers to quit as the pig price goes below the cost of production," commented Jim Long, President-CEO, Genesus Inc. So far, Spain and France have maintained pig prices to levels reported before the German ASF outbreak.

(Photo source: Cargill)
| 1 | Industry | 2020-11-25 11:54:10 | 2025-08-15 12:31:17 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1094 | Spain and Hungary received EU funding for lamb promotion campaign | Spain and Hungary have received the European Union's support for a new campaign to promote lamb and goat meat consumption among their domestic consumers, according to a statement released by the European Commission. |
The Spanish inter-professional association for sheep and goat meat INTEROVIC and its Hungarian counterpart, JKTTSZ, will launch a program called "European campaign to promote lamb and goat meat in Spain and Hungary" between May 2018 and December 2020. Both associations received a budget of €6,825,000 from the EU.
Each year, approximatively 2.7 million euros will be invested in the campaign. Spain’s campaign budget requires a sum of €6 million and the EU contribution will be €4.8 million, while Bulgaria's campaign budget is €825,000 and the country will receive €660,000.
The targeted audience for the new European program refers to the whole channel starting from sector, distribution, wholesalers, purchasing managers, traditional stores and Horeca sector. While regarding the final consumer, the campaign will place its focus especially on the population segment aged 25-45 years old and it will aim to increase the number of consumers that are over 45 years old.
The EU's objective is to increase lamb and goat meat consumption by 0.2% annually through new product presentations and by underlining the sustainable and natural character and differentiated flavor of these types of meats.
The main challenge of this campaign is to strengthen the presence of new cuts in stores and to encourage consumers to eat lamb and goat meat not only seasonally.
According to the EU's statement, Spain demonstrates a renewed potential for growth of domestic consumption after 15 years of decrease in the consumption of sheep/goat meat. Furthermore, after two years of communication campaigns the negative tendency of consumption is finally beginning to demonstrate a positive trend.
On the other hand, Hungary shows a great growth potential regarding lamb and goat meat consumption, since it is one of the few countries in the EU that has been experiencing growth in sheep meat production, which is an exception to the rule compared to the global performance of EU sheep meat producers.
| 1 | Market | 2018-04-14 06:26:27 | 2025-08-15 13:29:44 | Details Edit Delete | ||

5243 | Spain confirms bird flu outbreak on farm | 18,900 birds were culled to stop the disease from spreading. Europe is confronted with an AI epidemic that is no longer seasonal, warns experts. |
Spain has reported an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus on a farm north of Madrid, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said this week, adding to a wave of cases in Europe.
The outbreak started on January 13 on a farm of 18,900 birds in the village of Cantalejo, OIE said, citing a report from Spanish authorities. "The epidemiological survey conducted on the farm indicates that all the birds were brought onto the farm for fattening at the beginning of November 2021, with no animal movements outside of the farm since then," the report says. A restriction zone had been established around the outbreak.
According to the German animal health institute Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, the Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) seen in Europe for the last two years is no longer seasonal, a fact that is sustained by the ongoing outbreaks reported in countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Poland, etc. The current wave started in October 2021 and has already impacted 30 countries in the region. German experts also warned that the end of the bird flu epidemic is not yet in sight. Prior to the outbreak reported by Spain, the situation in the EU is illustrated by the map below.

In France, a total of 2.5 million birds needed to be killed as the southwest of the country faces several outbreaks of bird flu. Around 1.2 million animals have already been culled, according to the French Ministry of Agriculture, and an additional 1.3 million still needed to be killed as a precautionary measure to tackle the virus.
The spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, in Asia and Europe has raised concern among governments and the poultry industry after previous outbreaks led to the culling of tens of millions of birds and trade restrictions.
| 1 | Industry | 2022-01-21 10:08:50 | 2025-08-15 17:59:42 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4891 | Spain develops a project to control avian influenza | The 'INFLUOMA Project' will investigate the influence of microbiota on the susceptibility of birds to avian influenza viruses and will reveal the keys to better prevention of outbreaks on poultry farms. |
Three institutions in Spain will join forces to find out the influence of microbita in preventing bird flu being transmitted from wild birds to poultry farms in order to prevent outbreaks in commercial units. The Health and Biotechnology Research Group (SaBio) of the Gaming Resources Research Institute (IREC - CSIC, UCLM, JCCM), in coordination with the Animal Health Research Center of the Agrifood Research and Technology Institute of Catalonia (IRTA-CReSA) and the Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (NEIKER) are already collaborating for almost a decade on projects regarding biosecurity and prevention of bird flu in Spanish poultry farms but this time will implement a larger project in this field.
Overall, the INFLUOMA Project will investigate how microbiota influences the susceptibility of wild and domestic birds to avian influenza viruses. Building on previous findings, including the fact that wild birds infected with avian influenza also carry other pathogens, such as Salmonella or Mycobacterium avium, whose coinfection can have different effects; that wild birds that live on farms provide their connection to other farms and swamps and that there are individual differences in the susceptibility of domestic birds to infection with highly pathogenic avian influenza.
In the INFLUOMA Project, the researchers will combine studies in wild birds (waterfowl and sparrows) and poultry (fast and slow-growing chickens in an industrial and ecological regime in a natural environment) and laboratory experiments. On the one hand, they will use a new satellite tracking technology on a wild water bird model, the laughing seagull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), to assess the effect of avian influenza infection in combination with other pathogens on its mobility.
On the other hand, they will use a combination of field sample analysis and laboratory experiments to study whether the effect of the microbiota, subject to the rural or urban environment in which sparrows live, determines their susceptibility to avian influenza infection.

“These studies will reveal the keys to better prevention of avian influenza outbreaks on farms and will help us at the same time as a model to better understand the current drastic changes in the climate and environments in which wild and domestic birds inhabit, and especially food, influence the transmission and outcome of infectious diseases”, conclude the researchers, quoted by the Avicultura Industrial magazine.

The commensal microbiota plays an important role in health, being part of the defense against pathogens or, on the contrary, promoting infections. The composition of the microbiome varies by species, diet and habitat, and is altered during infections, as is the case with avian influenza viruses.
| 1 | Industry | 2021-08-19 10:23:52 | 2025-08-15 17:39:28 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2269 | Spain expands the range of pork products that can be exported to China | A new protocol between the two countries was signed during the visit to Spain of the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping. |
A new sanitary protocol signed between Spain and China allows the European country to expand the range of pork products exported to the Asian country. The protocol will allow to significantly expand the range of products authorized fresh meat and cured products such as ham, shoulder, loin, and sausage. So far, frozen meat, boneless ham, and offal have been exported to China, according to CdeComunicacion website.
With this new Protocol, access to higher added value products is possible, such as ham with bone and other cured products, which opens great possibilities for the meat industry to access the largest market in the world in very advantageous conditions. In addition, the new text with the sanitary and animal health requirements of pig exports from Spain will allow the export of refrigerated fresh meat, thus opting for a new market niche with high-quality products and a greater differentiation of the product.

China is by far the largest market for pork products, consuming approximately 50% of the total produced worldwide. The pig accounts for two-thirds of the total consumption of meat in the diet of Chinese consumers, and although they are also the main producers in the world, they constitute the largest import market.
Since last year, Spain has become the main supplier of pork in the Chinese market, reaching a volume of 373,00 tonnes worth €574 million.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-12-01 08:44:48 | 2025-08-15 16:28:01 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4692 | Spain expects another record year for pork exports to the Philippines | In the first two months of 2021, 41% of the total value of exports made last year in this market has already covered. |
Spanish pork exports to the Filipino market are set for another record year, informs the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA). Last year, Spanish pork exports to the Southeast Asian country reached €98.50 million but, in the last two months of 2021, pork exports to the Philippines have already covered 41% of that figure. Spanish exports of pork meat and offal to the Philippines reached between January and February a total of 26,048 tonnes worth €41.18 million, according to data released by MAPA.
The continuous drop in the Filipino pig inventory is expected to last through the year, according to estimates made by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). The last PSA report, released in April, shows that the national pig inventory has decreased by 24% between 2019 and 2021, from 12.7 million head to 9.72 million. Slaughter figures have decreased by 2.0% and 6.6% for the last two years, while the losses (deaths) reported by the industry 1.173 million head in 2019 (up 15% from 2018) and 1.562 million last year (up 33.2% from the previous year).
In this way, a structural deficit in local pork production is expected that will require an increase in foreign imports to be able to meet domestic demand and contribute to price stabilization and national food security.
In fact, a significant reduction in tariffs on these products along with an increase in minimum access volumes has already been applied by the Filipino government in the last couple of months, followed by several adjustments made to protect the local sector.
| 1 | Market | 2021-05-18 08:51:39 | 2025-08-14 20:41:39 | Details Edit Delete | ||

A context that has allowed it to configure, therefore, an increasingly solid organization chart within the serrano ham sector, as well as reach record figures in its exports with more than 18 million pieces sealed since its inception.

Furthermore, during 2023, the CJSE has continued to develop a sector plan together with ICEX, with promotional activity that focused mainly on 4 strategic markets such as France, the US, Mexico and the United Kingdom. Furthermore, in Australia, the association continued with its promotional campaign together with the Consorzio del Prosciutto di Parma, started in 2019 with the aim of promoting quality ham in that market.

The strength of this project founded in 1990 has been achieved with activities to promote and disseminate the ConsorcioSerrano quality seal in different markets around the world through tastings at points of sale, advertising in specialized and consumer-directed media, training sessions, training courses or participation in various national and international fairs; which have contributed to bringing the qualities of Serrano ham closer to the general and professional public and have increased the added value of this product by making known the differential values of ConsorcioSerrano ham all over the world.
| 1 | Retail | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2024-03-06 00:20:27 | 2025-08-15 17:45:24 | Details Edit Delete | |
4632 | Spain exports 40% more lambs for Ramadan | Spanish operators have exported between 300,000 and 350,000 lambs to Muslim countries for Ramadan, a maximum rise of 40% compared to the 250,000 of the previous Ramadan. |
The director of the interprofessional of sheep and goats (Interovic), Tomás Rodríguez, has conveyed to Efeagro the satisfaction of the sector for this year's campaign that has focused its shipments to Saudi Arabia and Jordan, to the detriment of other destinations that were important in previous years, such as Libya.

Libya is a destination now "overshadowed" after what happened to the ships "Karim Allah" and "Elbeik": the two ships loaded with calves that left Spain in mid-December bound, first to Turkey and then to Libya, but which they rejected the landing of the cattle alleging doubts about the possibility that they were affected by the disease of the blue tongue, an extreme that was denied by the Spanish Government and the association of producers (Asoprovac).

The importance of the Saudi country is remarkable because it opened its borders to Spanish lamb in February 2020 and this Ramadan has already become one of the main buyers. The case of Jordan is curious, according to Rodríguez, because it was open "for a long time" but did not demand a lot of Spanish cattle until "it was encouraged" when it saw the purchases of its Saudi neighbors.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2021-04-21 08:07:18 | 2025-08-15 17:38:50 | Details Edit Delete | |
