1313 Kuwait is ready to halt the livestock imports from Australia The Gulf country is building its own flocks due to the controversy related to the transportation conditions for the sheep.
Last year, Australia exports of live sheep reached 1.8 of which 1.28 million were delivered to Al Mawashi/Kuwait Livestock and Trading Company.
Now, the biggest buyer of Australian live sheep is at the point where it wants to halt the livestock imports due to a scandal regarding the death of thousands of animals during the transportation.
A suggestion to stop the trade and replace the live animals with chilled meat is not a viable solution, said Osama Boodai, Al Mawashi CEO. "One can not replace the other", he declared in an interview for Sheep Central magazine, mentioning the fact that Saudi Arabia halted the imports from Australia since 2012 and replace it with livestock imports from Africa.
Boodai recognized the fact that cruel condition of transportation is unacceptable but he also said that Kuwait is forced to take additional measure to secure the food demanded by the locals.
"We want to continue, but our food security needs and the doubts about Australian sheep exports means Al Mawashi is already looking to find other secure sources of livestock", mentioned the head of the company.
One of the first measures taken by Kuwait was to build its own flocks even if the country's agricultural resources are scarce. "For the countries in the Gulf, the livestock trade is a matter of national food security. We have started to build our own flock and hope to increase its capacity. however, there are real limitations to our production potential and ability to ever be self-sufficient", admitted Osama Boodai.

    Industry 2018-05-24 07:00:20 2025-08-01 23:36:42 Details Edit Delete
1316 Japan helps Cambodia to fight FMD with vaccine donation 300,000 doses worth $450,000 are to be delivered to Cambodia, where three million animals are threatened by the disease.
Cambodian Minister of Agriculture Veng Sakhon managed to sign an agreement with the Japanese government in order to receive a donation of 300,000 doses of vaccine against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) that affects animals with two toenails such as cows, buffaloes, pigs, sheep and goats.
The deal, worth $450,000, was perfected at the beginning of this week during a World Organisation for Animal Health meeting in Paris. According to a Cambodian government official, the donation would help the country to implement its strategic plan for the Mekong sub-region to fight foot-and-mouth disease.
"These vaccines are for the strains of viruses that exist in the country. Because the vaccine is expensive, our government can offer only a little each year. Therefore, this is an opportunity for us. The Government of Japan has offered this large additional number of vaccines, which we think could prevent the spread of the disease in the region that has occurred in previous years", said Tep Bengthai, deputy director of animal health at the Agriculture Ministry, quoted by Khmer Times newspaper. Last year, nearly 50 cases of the disease were reported in different areas in the country. 1319 US-China trade war to hurt Brazil in long-term The Latin America country is benefiting from the dispute at this point but it could lose some markets in medium and long-term.
The commercial dispute between USA and China may look favourable to Brazil interest but it could end up hurting meat producers in the country, Blairo Maggi, Brazil's Minister of Agriculture, declared for Reuters.
"In the short term Brazil is gaining a lot, it’s true. But in the medium term and in the long term it can be a problem because nearly everything we export, be it poultry or pork, rely on soy for food. If soybean rises in Brazil that means it is less expensive comparatively in the United States and since they are also poultry and pork producers, they will be more competitive and it will penalize us", explained Maggi.
Brazil is the world largest poultry producer but is facing heavy wind on some exports market due to a series of scandals regarding the poor standards on food hygiene and security. Meantime, in the last two months, the price of soy has increased by 8.3% affecting the costs of feeding for poultry and pork producers.
"At some point, China and the United States will find an agreement but we will potentially have lost some markets", said minister Blairo Maggi. For now, the US and China are negotiating a new agreement regarding tariffs on imported products.
    Industry 2018-05-25 07:02:26 2025-08-01 13:58:08 Details Edit Delete

1323 Vion suspends activities at Leeuwarden abattoir The measure was decided today and it has an immediate effect, announced the executives of the company.
Activities at Vion's beef abattoir in Leeuwarden will temporarily be suspended due to certain experiences in the new abattoir over the past few months, announced the company in a press release published on May 25.
The company has ascertained that a few small details need to be improved at the beef abattoir, which was designed using the latest insights. The past few months have been used productively, to identify and investigate the ‘teething problems’ that can occur in a new and advanced beef abattoir such as that in Leeuwarden.

"We see a higher number of carcasses that have been rejected compared to other beef abattoirs while we use the same process.
We are working with The Netherlands food and consumer product safety authority (NVWA) to find out why. Meantime, we will do small revisions in the system as this is a new facility of ours that we can optimise", declared for EuroMeatNews Nancy Aschman, Vion N.V. Group Communication Director. Local sources mentioned that the percent of carcasses rejected at Leeuwarden abattoir is almost three times higher than the average one set in other abattoirs in the country.

In order to solve these issues completely, Vion has decided to use the coming period to make a few technical modifications and that requires to halt the operation in the facility for an undetermined period of time.
"In addition to technical improvements, Vion has ascertained that the inspection results paint a different picture to those at other abattoirs in the Netherlands. The coming period will also be used to clarify the reason for this difference", informs the press release.
Also, the company is in touch with Dutch Food and Consumer Goods Authority (NVWA) on the subject.
The investment in the Leeuwarden abattoir was about 20 million euros according to a press release from February. "Vion regrets the developments in Leeuwarden and the effect they will have on its suppliers in the northern provinces and employees but sees no other option than temporary closure", specified the representatives of the company.
The location was fitted with a viewing gallery to make the process as transparent as possible for visitors. 1326 EU pork exports are 10% lower than a year before Prices are steady but the packing plant throughout the EU does not want to freeze more meat than necessary.
Europe's exports have dropped 10% compared to a year before and the regional market is trying to accommodate to the situation. China is buying 10% less in the first two months of the year to the EU, than in the same period of 2017.
However, the prices are balanced at around 1.10 -1.20 € / kg live weight, a little bit lower than a year ago when the average on the EU market was at €1.24. Confronted with this situation Spanish producers are increasing the weight of the pigs in order to cover the marginal losses.

"The weight is well above the weights of the last 4 years - 1.78 kg higher than a year ago, but more than 3.5 kg compared with 2015. The slaughter weight is increasing little by little. On the one hand because of market change - consumers looking for meat quality. On the other hand, this helps to dilute the fixed costs of production.
There are fewer animals to sacrifice, less supply, but demand is accommodating to it. The price of meat prevents the industry from sacrificing more and maintaining its rate of slaughter so as not to worsen its exploitation account", mentions Mercedes Vega, Genesus General Director for Spain, Italy and Portugal.
Meantime, the packing plant throughout the EU, in general, does not want to freeze more meat than necessary. 1341 US organic meat, poultry and fish market reaches record high in 2017 Sales of organic meat, poultry and fish in the United States have witnessed a significant boost last year as American consumers are becoming more health conscious and more demanding when it comes down to the contents of their food.
The Organic Trade Association’s (OTA) 2018 Organic Industry Survey revealed that organic meat, poultry and fish sales in the United States have grown by 17.2% in 2017 compared to the previous year, surpassing for the first time the $1 billion threshold to $1.2 billion.

Based on data presented by OTA, in 2017, the whole organic food sector has reached a sales figure of $49.4 billion, increasing by 6.4% compared to 2016.

OTA's survey also indicated that the overall growth rate of the organic food sector was slowed down by the poor increase in sales in the organic dairy and egg category, which had a growth rate situated below 9% compared to the level reported in 2016.

Still, OTA says that the growth rate of total organic food sales grew 1.1%, while organic food products are now accounting for 5.5% of the food sold in retail channels in the US.

"Organic has arrived. And everyone is paying attention,” said Laura Batcha, CEO and Executive Director of the Organic Trade Associaion. “Our survey shows there are now certified organic products in the marketplace representing all stages of the life cycle of a product or a company—from industry veterans to start-ups that are pioneering leading edge innovation and benefits and getting shelf space for the first time. Consumers love organic, and now we’re able to choose organic in practically every aisle in the store.”

Furthermore, OTA said that a market which faced unique challenges in 2017 was the organic egg market. Pasture-raised eggs, which clearly delineate humane practices such as outdoor access, presented stiff competition for organic eggs in 2017.
"Consumers perceive organic as requiring a number of humane practices including outdoor access for livestock and poultry. However, the requirements as written within current federal organic standards are unclear and inconsistently applied. The organic industry worked to advance the Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices rule to clarify required practices, but the rule was abruptly withdrawn by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2017," OTA's news release said.
    Industry 2018-05-30 11:08:27 2025-07-31 15:01:53 Details Edit Delete
