China to increase meat consumption by 10%

China's appetite for meat, especially pork, is expected to remain high in the next 8 years, as predicted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization analysts.
By 2026, the Chinese will consume 55 kilograms of meat per year, says the outlook report. That represents a 10% increase to the data registered in 2017. Pork will be the favoured meat among Chinese consumers, accounting for 60% of the total meat consumption.
Pork will be followed by poultry, beef and veal, and lamb and mutton, according to the report. Prices are expected to increase at a slower rate due to the impact of trade agreements signed recently and the power of purchase. "Further factors that can impact the meat outlook include consumer preferences and attitudes towards meat consumption. Consumers are showing a preference for free-range meat and antibiotic-free meat products, but the extent to which they are willing and able to pay a premium for them remains unclear", says the report.
