India's buffalo meat exports plunge 50%

India's buffalo meat exports have been hit by the evolution of the coronavirus outbreak in the Chinese market. In February, exports to the Philippines and Vietnam, the main channels for sending the meat into the Chinese market, have plunged by 50%, informs The Economic Times newspaper. "As an industry, we have lost more than $210 million with exports to Vietnam –which largely caters to the Chinese market --not moving. China market access remains extremely crucial for us," commented Fauzan Alavi, spokesperson for All-India Meat & Livestock Exporters Association.

At the same time, demand from Indonesia, another important market for buffalo meat, has dropped raising questions about the ability of Indian exporters to reach the same volumes reported last year. Between April 2019 and January 2020, India exported 10,04,676 tonnes of buffalo meat, mainly to Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Currently, almost all the processors are operating at half the capacities due to a decline in exports and low meat consumption in the domestic market.
In February, almost every exporter of meat to China has been hit by the lockdown of several cities in the country and the lack of personnel in the ports to deliver the containers into mainland China.
