Another Brazilian state close to receive FMD-free status

The Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul will benefit commercially as it achieves the status of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination, with the International Animal Health Organization (OIE), in May 2021. From the recognition, new import markets for pork and beef will be opened and producers in the state will even be able to receive better prices for animal protein. These were some of the projections made today by authorities during the State Forum for Foot and Mouth Disease Surveillance. "Whoever looks at our country will see a block (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Parana) consolidated because they are careful, they are vigilant," said the president of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), Ricardo Santin.
According to Santin, Santa Catarina, which has been free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination for 13 years, exports more than twice the volume of pork shipped from Rio Grande do Sul. From the new health condition, it highlights that the farmers will be able to access large markets such as Japan, South Korea and the United States today open only to Santa Catarina.
