Argentine to resume poultry exports to Japan
The government announced that, following lengthy negotiations and a change of stance by Japanese authorities, it will resume exports of poultry and egg products to the country after more than three months of suspension due to cases of avian influenza.
Meat exports to Japan had been suspended in February of this year following the emergence of a case of avian influenza in backyard poultry. At the time, Argentine appealed to various authorities, considering the measure unjustified, noting that the recommendations of the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) define that the status of "free country" is only lost when cases are detected within the commercial production chain.
The government emphasized that the change in stance by the Japanese authorities was achieved thanks to the work of the Argentine delegation from the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, which traveled to the country between May 8 and 9 to meet with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAFF), the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Investment, and the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During this trip, visits were also made to China and Indonesia to advance efforts to open up trade to various products of interest to Argentine.
In China, the agenda included meetings with the Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration of Customs of China, where the progress of the safeguard investigation into beef and the approval of priority products to begin exporting to that country were discussed.
