Bulgaria sees the highest pork prices in a decade
Pork prices in Bulgaria have jumped by 45%, reaching 8-9 leva (almost €4.5), the highest level in the last 10 years, due to the African Swine Fever situation in the country, announced the authorities from Sofia. According to Svetla Chamova, Executive Director of the Association of Meat Processors in Bulgaria, the situation is posing a threat for the processors as the decline in the country's pig herd is dramatic.
"We've lost almost 30% of the herd due to ASF outbreaks. We really don't know what the future holds for the industry in 2020", she declared for EuroMeat News during a working visit in Bucharest. A monitoring commission is watching the prices and governmental officials are saying that are going to give support for the industry if the prices are going to spike again. Bulgarian producers and processors are expecting prices to grow further in the last couple of months of 2019 but not that fast. Meantime, some of the consumers have switched from pork to poultry or beef due to the spike in prices seen in September and October.
