INTERPORC regrets the decision of the CHS to block the development of farms in Murcia
This measure, in his opinion, does not at all reflect the important advances that the Spanish livestock sector, and in particular the pig sector, has implemented in terms of sustainability and environmental protection.
INTERPORC stresses that the Spanish pig sector strictly complies with European and national legislation and works tirelessly to reduce the environmental impact of its activity. In fact, it points out that it can demonstrate with measurable results supported by science, for example, the 49% decrease in ammonia emissions per head of livestock between 1990 and 2022.
The organisation also points out that the MAPA computerised system for registering MTDs, calculating emissions and resource consumption on a farm (ECOGAN) demonstrates the level of progress made in the sector in this area.
On the other hand, the slurry ponds are already waterproofed and have the monitoring and control mechanisms, as required by law. For this reason, he points out that it is paradoxical to argue that a measure already regulated and complied with by all pig farms in Spain is going to be imposed.
The reality, reiterates the Interprofessional, is that the levels of nitrates and their control are perfectly established and regulated, and the pig sector always respects the legislation.
For this reason, INTERPORC asks the CHS and the competent administrations to reconsider this decision and open a constructive dialogue that will allow to assess the scientific evidence and the commitment of the pig sector to align itself with the most demanding sustainability standards and advance the current model of modern livestock farming that is respectful of the environment.
INTERPORC is also convinced that it is possible to find balanced solutions that protect the environment without compromising the future of an economic activity that is key to the economic and social development of rural municipalities.
