Japan will send specialists to Brazil, the first step toward opening its market to domestic meat

Japan has decided to send specialists to assess the situation of Brazilian cattle, the first step towards the possible opening of the market to Brazilian meat, said the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, this week in Tokyo, after negotiations with Japanese representatives.

Opening the Japanese market to Brazilian beef is the main concrete objective of President Lula's state visit to the country.

Sources within the presidential entourage reported that the Japanese government has already sent a "questionnaire" on the health status of cattle, which the Brazilian government must respond to. This measure is part of an effort to bring Brazilian beef back to one of the world's largest beef consumer markets, currently dominated by imports from the United States and Australia.

The minister added that the "modification of the avian influenza protocol, with regionalization by municipality, was also confirmed". The measure guarantees Brazilian chicken producers that there will be no interruption in purchases due to isolated cases of the disease.
