Spain: The Government allocates another million euros to the purchase of vaccines against dermatosis
The Council of Ministers gave the green light this Tuesday to the additional purchase of vaccines, within the framework of a health emergency declaration promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. This measure responds to the need to contain the spread of the disease and protect Spain's livestock.
Since the first outbreak was detected in Spain in October 2015 , the Ministry had already acquired more than 1.4 million doses for a value of €1.82 million. With this new investment, an additional 757,575 doses will be added to the national vaccine stockpile, bringing the total to more than 2.15 million doses and a cumulative investment of €2.82 million.
The vaccines are being distributed to the autonomous communities, as vaccination is considered a key tool in curbing the spread of this disease. To date, 20 outbreaks have been recorded in Spain, primarily in Girona (18 outbreaks) and Huesca (2 outbreaks). Although the restricted zone in Girona was lifted on February 26, new outbreaks detected in Huesca in early March have necessitated expanding the vaccination areas .
The Ministry has indicated that this expansion addresses both the need to immunize animals from disease-free areas and those that have lost maternal immunity . Furthermore, it includes plans for revaccinating animals vaccinated in 2025 and creating a sufficient strategic stock to respond quickly to future outbreaks.
Contagious nodular dermatosis is an infectious disease transmitted by vectors that causes fever, skin lesions, swelling of lymph nodes and, in some cases, the death of the animal, with significant economic consequences for the livestock sector.
Brussels endorses the expansion of vaccination zones
On the other hand, the European Commission has approved the expansion of vaccination zones proposed by Spain after the detection of new outbreaks in Huesca on March 2 and 3.
According to the decision published in the Official Journal of the European Union, the Spanish plan extends vaccination zone I to the entire province of Huesca , as well as to several municipalities in Zaragoza and areas of Lleida and Navarra that were not previously included.
Collectively, the vaccination areas cover territories in Catalonia, Aragon, Navarre, and the Basque Country. EU regulations emphasize that contagious nodular dermatosis can have a significant impact on animal health, the profitability of livestock farms, and the trade of animals and products both within the European Union and with third countries.
