REMA 1000 and Danish Crown enter into major climate partnership

As the first retail chain, REMA 1000 joins Danish Crown's climate program, which provides transparency and data insight into the CO₂ footprint throughout the entire value chain: From feed and technology use on farms to emissions from factories, transport and packaging. This makes it possible to document the CO₂ footprint of the animal – and ultimately the individual product in the store.

The model is a completely new way of driving sustainability initiatives across the entire value chain – from farm to fork. A climate program where all parties gain something valuable for the business, but at the same time take joint responsibility for continuously improving the climate footprint of production on the farms.

“With the partnership, we will gain a whole new level of insight into the CO₂ footprint of the goods we buy from Danish Crown – systematized and better data is extremely important for us to be able to work with our climate action plan for the areas that are not directly from our own operations – but the goods we purchase and sell to our customers,” says Anders René Jensen, Commercial Director at REMA 1000.

Meat accounts for over a third of the climate footprint in an average grocery store. Here, the detailed data insight into the CO₂ footprint right down to the farm level will be an important guide when Danish Crown and the retail chains need to develop and select products for the refrigerated counter in the future.

“When we can jointly develop foods where we actively use data to take CO₂ emissions into account, we are in a much better position. It could be when we add vegetables to the minced meat, or when we select specific fresh meat products for the refrigerated counter. By linking all links more closely – from farm to fork – we create a better basis for reducing the climate footprint of the products that customers put in their shopping cart,” says Peter Bendixen, Vice President, Nordics and Benelux, Danish Crown Foods.

Part of the partnership is to ensure that farmers can receive more training and that they can implement new technologies and efforts that can reduce the climate footprint in livestock production.

"The responsibility for CO₂-reduced meat production lies with the entire value chain. It cannot be placed solely with the individual farmer. Therefore, it is an important step to include retail chains in the climate program. On the one hand, we bring solid data insights into the value chain, and on the other hand, we help the individual farm implement solutions that reduce the climate footprint," says Peter Bendixen.
