657 | Russia looks into increasing its meat exports to Jordan | Alexander Tkachev, Russian minister of Agriculture, declared ar a meeting with Jordan's ambassador in Russia Amjad Adayle that Russia could be interested in increasing its meat and dairy exports to Jordan, as reported by PRIME. |

"The Russian side is interested in increasing exports of meat and dairy products, as well as in increasing the supply of wheat and poultry meat to the Jordanian market," Tkachev said, quoting the release of the Russian department, according to PRIME.

The Russian official added that the cooperation between the two countries in the field of agriculture has great prospects, a good potential for increasing the volumes of mutual deliveries of already existing commodity items, as well as expanding the commodity nomenclature of the products supplied.
| 1 | Market | 2018-01-23 14:09:54 | 2025-08-01 04:14:27 | Details Edit Delete | ||
7941 | Carrefour's CEO will boycott Mercosur meat in France | Alexandre Bompard has promised the French agricultural sector not to sell meat from Mercosur, but the move may be difficult to justify to Carrefour's customers in these countries. |
Alexandre Bompard, CEO of the Carrefour Group, has sent a letter to the presidents of the main French agricultural unions in which he assures that his chain will not sell meat from Mercosur.

Bompard thus shows his solidarity with French farmers and ranchers, who have demonstrated against the imminent agreement between the European Union and the economic block that brings together Argentine, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

The free trade agreement could lead to "the overflow onto the French market of meat production that does not comply with its requirements and standards," he argued in the letter.

The French manager wants to play with both decks, but the move could end up costing him dearly.

On the one hand, it is seeking to appear to the French public as a defender of the primary sector, a move it could benefit from in France. On the other hand, however, Brazil and Argentine together account for more than a quarter (27.2%) of the group's gross sales, and Carrefour's customers in these countries will probably not look favourably on an initiative that attacks one of its most emblematic export sectors.

With 22.7% of gross sales, Brazil is Carrefour's second most important market after France, while the group has recently announced major investments in Argentine, where it is already the leading foreign company in terms of number of employees in the country.

Many are wondering whether this move will not lead to a counter-boycott of Carrefour in the South American countries mentioned above, which have opened their doors to French investment but expect corresponding treatment in return.

Furthermore, it will be difficult to communicate why Mercosur meat is good for French consumers in these countries, but not in France.

ABPA's answer

The Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) regrets the unfortunate and unfounded statement by Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard, in a note published on the social network X in which he uses erroneous arguments when saying that meat produced by Mercosur member countries does not respect the criteria and standards of the French market.

The argument is clearly used for protectionist purposes, echoing an erroneous view of local producers against the necessary balance of supply of products from their own market – which is achieved through complementarity, with high-quality products that meet all the criteria determined by the health authorities of the importing countries, as is the case with Brazilian protein.

Bompard's statement goes against the logic of a global organization, with a strong presence in Brazil, which must act within the principles of competitiveness and respect for the free market.

Finally, ABPA reminds us that protectionism is also an attitude of disrespect for the principles of sustainability. By promoting the unjustified blockade of products from regions with better production capacity with respect to environmental issues, Mr. Bompard places consumers in his stores in a consumption logic with more emissions and under greater inflationary pressure and less access for the less favored classes.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2024-11-22 00:20:24 | 2025-08-01 05:51:10 | Details Edit Delete | |
6083 | Algeria enabled the export of meat with bone from Argentine | Algeria enabled its market to import bone-in meat from Argentina and accepted the proposal of the National Agrifood Health and Quality Service (Senasa) to update the certificate that accompanies shipments of vacuum-packed fresh chilled boneless bovine meat, extending the term of useful life of the meat to 120 days. |
The Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nation, Juan José Bahillo, said that "the progress achieved is very auspicious for our country's international trade", when pondering the negotiations carried out by the portfolio under his charge, Senasa and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Nation that culminated with a technical videoconference between the two countries, in which professionals from Senasa, SAGPyA, the Argentine Embassy and representatives of the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DSV) of Algeria.

During this virtual meeting, the technical modifications required to update the export agreement for refrigerated beef with and without bone were identified. In addition, the recognition of the shelf life of the refrigerated product was extended to 120 days. In this way, new conditions were reached that allow promoting greater commercial opportunities between both countries.

In this way, the Algerian health service communicated to the president of Senasa, Diana Guillén, its agreement with the consensual health certificate that contains the requirements for the shipment of bovine meat with bone from Argentina to the African country.

It should be remembered that within the framework of the visit carried out in November 2022, officials from the Foreign Ministry held a meeting with the Algerian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Henni Abdelhafid, where they discussed the possibilities of acquiring beef from Argentina.

Argentina exported a total of 29,700 tons in 2004, and the last export of beef had been made in 2018.

Algeria is the 11th export destination for Argentine agro-industrial products, with a total value of USD 1,572 million in 2022, with a growth of 9.7% in relation to the previous year. In particular, Algeria stands out as the main export destination of powder milk, with a total value of USD 351 million in 2022. Argentina is Algeria's first supplier of corn, soybean and dairy products.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-02-01 00:05:05 | 2025-08-01 02:05:27 | Details Edit Delete | |

468 | Alimentaria 2018 will extend its international influence | Alimentaria has today presented what will be the show's biggest exhibition in recent years. The show will offer a platform for internationalisation and business to the food, drinks and hospitality industries, with new spaces, content and innovation which will give added value to the world of gastronomy. In 2018, the exhibition will take place alongside Hostelco to make the most of the synergies that exist between sectors like hospitality and gastronomy. That collaboration will attract more than 4,500 exhibiting businesses, 27% of them coming from outside of Spain. |

With more than 100,000m2 of net exhibition space, almost the entire area within Gran Vía de Fira de Barcelona, the celebration will take place between 16th and 19th April 2018 alongside Hostelco, an International Platform for the Food, Gastronomy and Hospitality Equipment Industry. Together, the exhibition will be one of the world's biggest global events for the industries of food, gastronomy and hospitality equipment right from a distribution level through to the HORECA channel which offers a rounded solution for all.

Josep Lluis Bonet, president of Alimentaria and Fira de Barcelona, has explained the benefits of working together, saying, "it adds value to both exhibitions, making them one of the biggest international platforms for the industries of food, gastronomy and hospitality equipment".

During the presentation, J. Antonio Valls, managing director of Alimentaria Exhibitions and the platform, has considered the potential of the show, with "the strengths that the event has, such as the international positioning, the importance and complicity of the Spanish agricultural industry with the backing of powerful brands, the weight of the HORECA channel, the international appeal of our gastronomy and the relevance of the tourism sector, among others".

According to Valls, "these characteristics give the exhibition a unique character based on division by sector, the extension of internationalisation, innovation (with The Alimentaria Hub at the heart of it), and gastronomy (with The Alimentaria Experience). A model that offers a platform for internationalisation and business, with new spaces, content and innovation".

Encouraging internationalisation

The managing director of the Food Industry within the Spanish Ministry for Agriculture, Food, Fishing and Environment, Fernando Burgaz, commented on the strength of the sector and its potential to continue growing in an international environment: "the journey that we have ahead is magnificent, with continual growth for the next few years". He also pointed out that "in the last few years, our exports to countries outside of the European Union are increasing. This is one of the biggest challenges for the food industry".

Along the same lines, María Naranjo, director of Food and Gastronomy of ICEX, Spanish Exportation and Investment, has highlighted that "more than 52% of Spanish food producers are exporters" and added "sales to China and the United States of America are increasing at a more impressive rate than within the European Union. The agreements signed with Canada and Japan will open up interesting new opportunities for the sector".

As a result, Alimentaria 2018 focuses upon facilitating contact between international buyers and exhibiting businesses, coming from more than 70 countries, including Germany, Argentina, Ecuador, Belgium, Holland, China, Hong Kong, Romania, Russia, Thailand and Turkey. Therefore, it will extend the invitation to key buyers with 30% of the expected visitors coming from overseas.

More sectors, innovation and gastronomy

The impetus for innovation and gastronomical quality will be the key identifying factors for Alimentaria. That's why The Alimentaria Hub and The Alimentaria Experience will offer an added dimension, in addition to business opportunities, to encourage innovation in the sector, detecting the key trends and boosting connections between the food, gastronomy and tourism industries.

Esteemed figures, such as Marius Robles, co-found and CEO of Reimagine Food and seven Michelin star chef Carme Ruscalleda, debated the latest topics in the world of food and gastronomy innovation. On the theme, Robles said "the future of food lies in ultra-specialisation thanks to new technology". Ruscalleda also pointed to the fact that "a restaurant is a product and knowledge, and at the same time it has to be sustainable: measuring results is basic from the first day".

Alimentaria 2018 will split its exhibition into several specialised areas, Intervin, Intercarn, Restaurama, Expoconser, Interlact, and Multiple Foods, the platform for products of widespread consumption and trends in food. There will also be Alimentaria Premium, an exclusive zone for producers of real gastronomical gems.
| 1 | Events | 2017-11-30 12:00:24 | 2025-07-28 20:00:09 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1099 | 12,500 business meetings expected to take place at Alimentaria 2018 | Alimentaria, the greatest exhibition platform for the Spanish food and beverage industry and a show of reference in Southern Europe, is celebrating more than four decades since its foundation. This year the show will be even bigger as Alimentaria joined forces with Hostelco, the International Trade Fair for Equipment for Catering, Hospitality and Communities. J.Antonio Valls, director of Alimentaria and managing director of Alimentaria Exhibitions, gave an exclusive interview to EuroMeatNews in which he talks about what makes the Spanish trade fair a succes and about the expectations for this year's grand event. |
What do you expect different from this year's edition of Alimentaria?

It will be the largest fair we have organized so far, because Alimentaria (the Food, Beverage and Food Service Show) will be held with Hostelco (the International Exhibition of Equipment and Machinery for Catering, Hotel and Catering). These two exhibit halls will offer a great platform for internationalization, business, and innovation, with gastronomy like differential value, for the food industry, drinks, Food Service, and hospitality equipment.

What further information can you tell us about the partnership between Alimentaria and Hostelco? Do you think it will boost the event's success?

Alimentaria and Hostelco will occupy an area covering 100,000 square meters of the Gran Via in Fira de Barcelona. This event will be a unique opportunity for professionals and important companies and organizations in the sector, hundreds of activities, and the presentation of the latest news in food and drinks for the restaurant and gastronomy industries.

Furthermore, it is expected that around 150,000 professional visitors will attend, of which close to 30% will be foreigners and 1,400 key buyers are also invited. More than 300 innovations will be displayed, some 120 conferences and congress activities and 35 chefs with 45 Michelin stars are going to do different showcookings.

How many companies will be exhibiting within Alimentaria this year and what is the key factor that kept the interest of the companies for your event over the years?

Alimentaria celebrates more than four decades and in this next edition we have the support of 4,500 exhibiting companies (27% of which will be international from 70 countries) which shows that we have been able to contribute to the most significant changes that have occurred in the food industry and in the way of feeding.

Furthermore, the key factor that attracts so many companies is that Alimentaria is the show of reference in southern Europe and one of the most important in the world and the main exhibitor of the products and novelties of Spanish food and gastronomy, which are a world reference.

What are the main attractions of this year’s edition?

There will be a lot of novelties. Among others, I would highlight in Barcelona Cocktail Art (in Intervin), an area in which the most innovative proposals and products in the field of cocktails will be announced, in line with the booming trends of nightlife and, on the other hand, Vinum Nature, a new space for grouped for organic wines. We will premiere the Craft Beer Corner (in Restaurama), an area dedicated exclusively to craft beer. And, within the meat sector, I would highlight the celebration for the first time in Alimentaria of the World Congress of Wholesale Markets – promoted by Mercabarna with the World Union of Wholesale Markets –, which guarantees the presence at the fair of the large wholesale distribution, managers, and Market managers from more than 40 countries, potential buyers of meat products.

What is your international strategy in attracting such diverse players from the food and beverage industry?

Internationalization is a long-term process that has been brewing for years, although exports from the Spanish agri-food industry took a decisive boost from 2008 (because of the slowdown in Spanish demand). Therefore, from Alimentaria we work to promote 12,500 business meetings among international buyers (in this edition we have invited 800 Hosted Buyers) and exhibiting companies, within our Food & Drink Business Meetings and Intervin Business Meetings programs.

What can you say about the exhibition's evolution from its start until now? How did Alimentaria make its name in the industry?

The keys to the success in Alimentaria over these four decades have been – among others – the reiterated commitment for the professionalization of the sector; internationalization, since the show is an important meeting point and business between exhibitors and international buyers; the verticality so we put in value the most representative monographic salons in the sector in our country, such as Intercarn (the show dedicated to meat products and their derivatives); gastronomy as a differential feature of positioning, as well as the constant innovation and observatory of trends that the fair represents.

How does Alimentaria support the Spanish food and beverage industry?

Alimentaria supports the Spanish food and beverage industry and, above all, its internationalization. For this, the show has the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (MAPAMA), the ICEX. It has also signed collaboration agreements with the Spanish Federation of Food and Beverage Industries (FIAB), the Spanish Hospitality Federation (FEHR), and the Association of Large Consumer Companies (AECOC), among others, with the aim of facilitating the contact between exhibitors and international buyers.

Have you noticed an increase in foreign participators? Are there exhibitors from outside Spain attending for the first time at Alimentaria?

International companies value the excellent opportunities offered by the show as a gateway to the Spanish and European markets, so we have more and more international demand. Around 27% of the exhibiting companies of Alimentaria will come from outside Spain. The countries of the European Union that contribute with most exhibitors are Italy, France, Portugal and Germany, although it is the presence of Eastern Europe (Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania, Russia, Republic Czech and Latvia, among others), Asian countries (led by China and South Korea), Mediterranean countries (such as Israel, Turkey, Cyprus, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia) and Latin American countries (such as Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Costa Rica) that is becoming increasingly important. And, of course, there are exhibiting companies that come to Alimentaria for the first time.

What benefits do you see arising from uniting the two fairs for Spain's food and beverage industry?

Among others, the main benefit is the common goal of getting the assistance of those more than 150,000 professionals who will find in the same venue the most complete and transversal offer of the global market, as well as its main trends. In this way, both visitors and exhibitors will benefit from the synergies generated between the products offered and the activities of both events, especially when the demand of the catering sector presents a high degree of atomization.

Did the announcement regarding the partnership between Alimentaria and Hostelco influence the number of exhibitors from the food & beverage industry that are programmed to attend this year's edition?

Yes, because gastronomic quality will be promoted, which will be one of the main hallmarks of Alimentaria and Hostelco and unique in the world. Therefore, more than 150 activities will be organized to promote connections between the food, gastronomy and tourism industries.

Considering how popular is the Spanish cuisine at an international level, how does Alimentaria and Hostelco plan to promote it further?

The complementarity between the two fairs will be especially evident between Hostelco and Restaurama, the Alimentaria salon dedicated to Food Service and food outside the home, and in the spaces that each of them devotes to gastronomic demonstrations. Thus, the Hostelco Experience and the Alimentaria Experience will gather 35 of the most awarded chefs of the moment, adding 45 Michelin stars among them. Andoni Luis Aduriz (Mugaritz restaurant, Gipuzkoa), Fina Puigdevall (Les Cols, Girona), Nandu Jubany (Can Jubany, Barcelona), Paco Roncero (La Terraza del Casino, Madrid) and Mario Sandoval (Coque, Madrid) will participate in both events with different approaches.

Which are the most popular products showcased during the exhibition?

Undoubtedly, the star space of Alimentaria to expose the products that will become the most popular of the salon is Innoval – the exhibition with about 300 novel products of food and drinks –, within the Alimentaria Hub, where the Innoval Awards will also be delivered to 16 of the proposals on show.

What can you tell us about the exhibition for the meat products from Alimentaria?

The most important companies and associations of the Spanish meat industry have validated their confidence in Intercarn. The show, which will exhibit raw meat products, processed, cured, precooked, dry, Iberian and range elaborations, will occupy about 15,000 square meters (11% more than in the last edition), hosting half a thousand exhibiting companies, of which 20% of them will participate to Intercarn for the first time.
| 1 | Events | 2018-04-16 07:06:16 | 2025-08-01 12:02:59 | Details Edit Delete | ||
8649 | Australia: Cattle indicators are strong – with confidence for the future | All cattle indicators surpassed $3/kg for the first time in 3 years. The Dairy Cow Indicator rose 19¢ to reach 311¢/kg live weight (lwt). Cattle indicators have seen a combined increase of more than 9%, all rising over 32¢/kg. |
A few interesting trends are appearing in the cattle market along with indicator growth.

Female indicators – processor categories are up over stable restocker categories

The Dairy Cow Indicator is now only 2¢/kg lwt lower than the Processor Cow Indicator. Both indicators have risen due to increased global demand for lean beef after US production decline. These two female indicators are also closing in on the Restocker Yearling Heifer Indicator.

The Restocker Heifer Indicator has not performed as well as other female cattle indicators. This is likely due to the southern drought, a slowing northern rebuild, reducing the need for future breeders, and the present significant heifer supply. It suggests producers are no longer investing in a long-term rebuild.

Steers

The Restocker Yearling Steer Price has jumped 20¢/kg lwt, or 5%, over the last month. It is now closing in on the Feeder Steer Indicator as the highest value indicator at 360¢/kg lwt. Restocker steers are performing well, in contrast to restocker heifers, with recent southern winter rain. This indicates producers with access to pasture feel they can background and trade steers, selling them into the high-priced feeder market.

With the gap closing between feeder and restocker yearling steers, producers will be encouraged to add weight to animals. Incentive for backgrounders to add weight to animals has been lacking for the last month as the feeder steer has far outpriced the restocker price.

Demand-driven

FY2024−25 is forecast to see the highest ever beef production. While high supply would usually dampen prices, these high livestock prices can be attributed to strong global demand.

Future focused

High restocker yearling steer prices indicate producers have short-medium term confidence about feeder steer and heavy steer prices. When prices for a restocker category rise, it indicates confidence in high finished market prices, otherwise high premium for restockers is not justified.

MLA’s Beef Producer Intentions Survey reinforced this confidence. It showed the industry has +53 basis point sentiment – its highest on record.

Recent rain, while not drought-breaking, has also helped positive restocker steer sentiment.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2025-07-21 00:05:10 | 2025-08-01 12:45:36 | Details Edit Delete | |
3534 | Malaysia sets stringent checks against ASF disease | All entry points nationwide are subject to the measure as the virus keeps marching through Asia. |
Stricter border controls have imposed by Malaysian authorities in a desperate attempt to keep away the African swine fever (ASF) from entering its territory. The risk is considered to be elevated due to the Chinese New Year festive season that is starting this week.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry has directed the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) to conduct stringent checks at all entry points nationwide, especially in this period to ensure that pork and pork products are free of the African Swine Fever (ASF) virus.
To date, the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry has issued a ban on the import of pork and pork-based products from 10 countries namely China, Laos, Poland, Belgium, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Myanmar, South Korea, the Philippines and Indonesia.
Last year, 2,497.91 kg of pork and 3,232.58 kg of pork products were seized at the air, land and sea entrances, and the confiscated items were either burned or buried in accordance with the standard operating procedures.
Currently, the disease is present in China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Noth Korea, South Korea, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, Indonesia and Myanmar. 5365 | Italy counts 66 cases of ASF | All have been reported in the wild boar population in the regions of Piedmont and Liguria. |
After two months since its first ASF outbreak, Italy has now 66 cases reported in two regions: Piedmont (38 cases) and Liguria (28 cases). So far, the disease has been found only in the wild boar population but new measures are prepared by the local authorities to stop the virus from spreading.
The President of the Piedmont Region, Alberto Cirio, approved this week an order with new urgent and specific measures to depopulate wild boar populations, monitor the presence of ASF and guarantee biosecurity in the infected zone, the active surveillance zone, the proximal free zone and the distal free zone.

As an exception to the legislation, wild boar selection hunting can also be carried out at night, provided that night vision equipment is used to facilitate the selection of identified animals.
The measure is valid throughout the region and expires on June 30. In the infected zone and in the active surveillance zone, the application of the measures is a priority and urgent and the depopulation measures must be carried out immediately and with the greatest possible intensity in the three months following the entry into force of the order.
Similar measures have been adopted in the past by Poland, Romania and Germany and the main result was a migration of wild boars to regions where the herds felt safe. Italy and North Macedonia were the latest European countries to report ASF outbreaks but the disease is also present in Poland, Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Slovakia, Germany, the Baltic states, Ukraine, Belarus and Russia (see map below). The Czech Republic and Belgium were the first countries to regain their ASF-free status from OIE.

| 1 | Industry | 2022-03-18 12:06:44 | 2025-08-01 10:58:18 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4776 | IAWS: Guarantee of Traceability | All in all, the IAWS certification seeks that consumers are participants in the work carried out by the pork sector. |
The Spanish white pork sector, through the improvement of animal welfare, has made numerous advances in the field of biosecurity, health, animal handling and feeding; inter alia. All these values are defended and pursued by the “Welfare Commitment Certified” seal and ultimately translate into guaranteeing and certifying to consumers a complete “From Farm to Fork” traceability in the products they consume.
The Technical Regulation INTERPORC ANIMAL WELFARE SPAIN (IAWS) is based on the 5 freedoms established by the OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) and on the 12 General Criteria for animal Welfare, also taking into account the EU regulations. It is evaluated and validated by a Scientific Committee of experts in animal welfare, and its transparency has been endorsed by organizations for the protection and defense of animals.
In order to obtain the certification, independent certification bodies are in charge of auditing and verifying farms, slaughterhouses and industries, so the rigor and objectivity of the certification is always met. Furthermore, only after having fulfilled all the requirements demanded by the IAWS Technical Regulation and in all the phases of the chain, the operators can use their products with the seal. This entails an exercise of transparency and real traceability that the seal certifies to consumers
In order to inform to consumers of its origin, each product has a NOAC code (Number of Certified Authorized Operator), unique and non-transferable for each certified operator, which consists of: the acronym IAWS; the type of operator (G for farms, S for slaughterhouses and I for industry); the Operator number (a 3-digit serial); and the type of production system of the operator (1, 2 or 3).
All in all, the IAWS certification seeks that consumers are participants in the work carried out by the pork sector, offering them clear and rigorous information about all the efforts that it dedicates in the production of the food that reaches their tables, and that allows them to recognize that a product has been produced with the maximum guarantees by having detailed information on each of the processes and on each of the steps in the value chain.
For further information, please check our website: https://www.bienestaranimalcertificado.com/animal-welfare-certified/
| 1 | Industry | 2021-06-29 09:00:01 | 2025-07-29 04:19:05 | Details Edit Delete | ||

8402 | Germany is once again completely free of foot-and-mouth disease | All of Germany is officially free of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). In mid-March, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) had already reinstated the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)-free status without vaccination for the vast majority of Germany. |
As the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) announced on April 14, 2025, in a letter to associations, the WOAH has now also approved Germany's application for recognition of the regained FMD-free status for the containment zone in Brandenburg and Berlin. This means that all trade restrictions are lifted for this containment zone, which was established around the outbreak farm, and the free movement of animals and goods can resume without restrictions. At the same time, the WOAH status of FMD-free without vaccination has been reinstated for all of Germany since April 14, 2025.

Brandenburg's Minister of Agriculture, Hanka Mittelstädt, described the WOAH recognition as positive news for all livestock farmers in Brandenburg and throughout Germany in a press release. This success is the result of proven crisis management and consistent animal disease control. Despite this extremely positive development, Mittelstädt warned of the ongoing risk of a renewed infiltration of the animal disease - particularly through travel, food or animal transport. This risk has increased particularly due to the outbreaks in Slovakia and Hungary. The minister therefore appealed to livestock farmers to strictly adhere to biosecurity measures. Furthermore, farmers who employ staff from regions affected by FMD should ensure that they do not bring any food of animal origin with them.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2025-04-17 00:10:26 | 2025-08-01 13:28:33 | Details Edit Delete | |
2543 | Pakistan is targeting a bigger share in the global halal meat market | All Pakistan Meat Processors and Exporters Association (APMPEA) urges the government to support halal meat exports. |
Pakistan meat industry wants to play a bigger role in the global halal market and is asking the country's government to assign its commercial officers abroad to contribute to the national exports by searching new markets for Pakistani Halal products. "We can easily enhance our Halal products' exports by making room in Turkish, Central Asian countries, Chinese, Indonesian and other countries", declared APMPEA Chairman Nasib Ahmad Saifi in an interview for Business Recorder newspaper.
Brazil, India and several African countries are already well positioned in this market and the competition is going to be hard. Pakistan does not have a programme to support meat exports even if encourages livestock exports abroad.
Saifi said that the practice of allocating Live Animal Export special quotas should be abolished and only value-added products of livestock should be allowed to export.

A ban on slaughtering of female animals should be imposed and a mechanism should also be placed for its effective implementation, he proposed. By now, the growing population of the country has already exhausted the livestock supplies, and animal smuggling has deepened the crises.
In his opinion, the Halal Meat industry has a potential of expanding the meat export four folds in no time if given support by the authorities.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-02-07 06:22:08 | 2025-07-31 12:32:39 | Details Edit Delete | ||
6920 | UK: Farmers urged to be vigilant after pig flu strain confirmed in human | All pig keepers have been urged to remain vigilant and maintain biosecurity levels, after an influenza strain currently circulating in pigs in the UK was confirmed in a person in North Yorkshire. |
This was first case of Influenza A(H1N2)v detected in a human in the UK, although it has been reported elsewhere, including in Europe and the US.

While the announcement initially prompted dramatic headlines and comparisons to the H1N1 ‘swine flu’ pandemic in humans of 2009, the NPA stressed that H1N2 was only transmissible from pigs to humans, but not from human to human.

"There is no evidence there is any risk to humans from either handling or eating pork", National Pig Association (NPA) chief executive Lizzie Wilson said. "The NPA understands that the UKHSA is investigating how this virus strain was contracted by a human and we await their conclusions".

There has been a marked increase in reports of flu in pigs in recent weeks and months.

Ms Wilson added: "Pig keepers should be vigilant to any signs of ill health amongst their animals and maintain high levels of hygiene and biosecurity when working with pigs. We also encourage the use of the APHA and SRUC free testing service and to consult the Code of Practice for Swine Influenza. If you are concerned, please consult your veterinary surgeon".

The message was reiterated by Chief Veterinary Officer, Christine Middlemiss. “We know that some diseases of animals can be transferred to humans – which is why high standards of animal health, welfare and biosecurity are so important", she said.

"Through our animal and human surveillance systems, we work together to protect everyone. Pig keepers must also report any suspicion of swine flu in their herds to their local vet immediately".

UKHSA stressed that human infections with swine influenza viruses occur 'sporadically'. There have been 50 human cases of influenza A(H1N2)v reported globally since 2005, although none were related genetically to this strain.

Based on early information, the infection detected in the UK is different from recent human cases of influenza A(H1N2) elsewhere in the world, but similar to viruses in UK pigs, it said.

Swine influenza symptoms

Clinical signs in pigs can include:

sneezing, coughing and difficulty breathing

abortions (in some cases)

increased discharge from eyes or nose

high temperature

loss of appetite

weakness

swollen and red eyes.

Infected animals will usually recover in 5 to 7 days.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-11-29 00:10:51 | 2025-08-01 11:32:54 | Details Edit Delete | |
2466 | Beef + Lamb New Zealand sounds the alarm over no-deal Brexit | All scenarios are taken into consideration due to the fact that the UK market accounts for 45% of total sheepmeat exported in the EU. |
Several Brexit scenarios are now possible and Beef + Lamb New Zealand is watching developments and continue to prepare for any eventuality. "At the same time we continue to work closely, and in partnership with the Meat Industry Association (MIA) and the New Zealand government on the negotiations at the World Trade Organisation and the implications for our sheep and beef quotas into the EU27 and UK markets", announce the association on its website.
At present, New Zealand exports just over $2 billion worth of red meat to the EU, most of it sheepmeat. 55% of the sheepmeat exported in Europe is consumed in the EU 27, while 45% ends up in Britain, according to official data.
Scenarios regarding a no-deal Brexit, government resignation, a second referendum or delayed/cancelled Brexit are taken in consideration by the red meat industry in New Zealand as uncertainty is again the term to perfectly describe the situation of Great Britain's departure from the EU.
The main danger is represented by the disruption that could appear in case of a no-Brexit. "Once Brexit occurs, just a six-minute check of documents at Dover will back up traffic to London in 12 hours", explains Jeff Grant, New Zealand's red meat sector Brexit representative.
Even a split quota between the EU27 and UK wouldn't not represent an advantage for the New Zealand sheepmeat exporters considering the fact that, in case of no-deal Brexit, it is possible that British exporters might effectively be shut out of the EU market and New Zealand is going to see its tariff-free quota of 228,000 tonnes of sheepmeat a year halved.
Also, any future free trade agreement (FTA) with the UK could open the door for new competitors in this market such as Australia.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-01-21 09:53:27 | 2025-08-01 13:13:21 | Details Edit Delete | ||
426 | Mandatory CCTV in every slaughterhouse in England starting with 2018 | All slaughterhouses from England will be obliged to install CCTV recording starting with 2018, the Environment Secretary Michale Gove announced recently. |

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) said that after an extremely positive reaction from the meat industry, welfare groups and the public it will take the plans forward regarding the mandatory implementantion of CCTV in all slaughterhouses from across England.

In August, the Secretary of State launched a consultation on the plans to deliver a manifesto commitment for CCTV to be required in every slaughterhouse in England in all areas where live animals are present, with unrestricted access to footage for Official Veterinarians - reassuring consumers that high welfare standards are being effectively enforced.

Legislation will be introduced in the New Year, coming into force in the Spring. All slaughterhouses will be required to comply following an adjustment period of up to six months.

A summary of responses published today (Sunday) shows that of almost 4,000 respondents, more than 99% were supportive of the plans.

"We have some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world and want to cement our status as a global leader by continuing to raise the bar," Environment Secretary Michael Gove said. "The reaction to this consultation highlights the strength of feeling among the public that all animals should be treated with the utmost respect at all stages of life and be subject to the highest possible welfare standards."

Mr. Gove added that these strong measures also provide a further demonstration to consumers around the world that as Great Britain is leaving the European Union the country will continue to produce food to the very highest standards.

Having carefully considered all of the responses, the Government agrees with the overwhelming proportion of respondents that were in favour of mandatory CCTV to protect animal welfare in slaughterhouses. The proposals will also give the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) Official Veterinarians (OVs) unfettered access to the last 90 days of footage to help them monitor and enforce animal welfare standards.
| 1 | Industry | 2017-11-20 10:15:20 | 2025-07-31 16:26:44 | Details Edit Delete | ||
