1159 | Brexit will impair the UK fish&seafood sector | Rabobank analysts consider that, in case of hard Brexit, Great Britain has much more to lose on fisheries than EU's sector. |
If Brexit will bring along a series of tariffs imposed on seafood from 2021, UK has a lot more to lose the European partners, predicts Beyhan de Jong, Associate Analyst - Animal Protein, Rabobank.

Seafood trade between UK and EU will be impacted but the British sector will feel the hit much harder, says de Jong, based on the domestic consumption in the kingdom.

Domestic consumption is based mainly on imported fis&seafood products while the catch is usually exported. "Mackerel, langoustine, and scallops are the top three species caught in British waters by British vessels, but they don’t have a market in the UK. These species are exported, predominantly to the EU. On the other hand, cod, haddock, pollock, as well as shrimp and prawns are the species favoured most by British consumers – yet they are largely imported", explained the analyst.

70% of the seafood produced in the UK is exported to EU and the domestic market is depending only by 30% on the imports from the bloc. 20% of seafood imports come from third countries that have a preferential trade agreement with EU, such as Faroe Islands, Norway or Iceland.

From the products exported to the EU market, salmon has a significant importance on third-countries markets, 17% of the exported fish being shipped to the US. Also, 33% (50, 000 tons) of the salmon produced in Great Britain is sold on the domestic market and about 70,000 tons are imported.

Without a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed between UK and EU after the transition period (2 years) tariffs imposed by the World Trade Organization could run from 2% to 20% impairing the fisheries sector in Great Britain by reducing the demand for British fish&seafood on the European single market. On the other side, EU could find other markets to export its seafood production.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-04-24 13:22:08 | 2025-08-06 09:10:34 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1160 | South African pork industry to lose over $80 million after listeria outbreak | The pork industry from South Africa is expected to report estimated loses amounting to R1 billion ($81.4 million) after being hit by the listeria outbreak that took the lives of 199 people, as reported by Business Day. |
FNB Agri-Business senior agricultural economist Paul Makube said in a statement that the listeria outbreak caused a drop in pork product prices and a drop in demand for cold and processed meats, while prices for other meat products are currently increasing, according to Business Day.

Mr. Makube added that South African pork farmers are redirecting the pigs for the fresh meat market and this is generating a surplus, while in the meantime there is also an increased pressure on low prices because of this.

Earlier in April, Johann Kotzé, CEO at South African Pork Producers’ Organisation, said that the pig prices went down by 40% and 50% and that the local pork industry shall suffer a loss of an estimated R45 million ($3.6 million) a week.

FNB says that prices for other meats increased by nearly 6% after the outbreak.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-04-24 14:02:19 | 2025-08-04 04:31:43 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1162 | Pork exports from the UK went up in February | UK's exports of pork increased by 10% in February compared to the similar period from last year due to a rise in the country's domestic production, according to the latest analysis published by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). |
AHDB analyst Bethan Wilkins says that, based on HMRC data, fresh/frozen pork exports were 17,500 tons in February worth £22.5 million ($31.4 million), the value increased by a modest 6% due to lower average unit prices.

The volume growth was based on the increase of 13% sales to EU countries (up by 1,200 tons). The most important importers from the EU were Denmark, the Netherlands and Poland.

Wilkins says that the increase in export appeared based also on a "narrowing gap between UK and EU pig prices during the month may have aided pork trade within Europe."

Pork exports to China and Hong Kong were down by 8% (-260 tonnes) and 15% (-124 tonnes), respectively.

On the other hand, according to Wilkins, UK's pork exports reported increases to other global markets.

"Volume shipments to the US grew by nearly a third on the year (+105 tonnes) and trade with the Philippines (+244 tonnes) and South Korea (+115 tonnes) more than doubled. In contrast to last year, around 25% of pork exports to the US consisted fresh/chilled rather than frozen product during February. This boosted the value of pork exports to the US by almost 50% (+£965,000), which helped support the value of UK pork exports overall," said Wilkins.
| 1 | Market | 2018-04-24 14:58:01 | 2025-08-04 07:08:02 | Details Edit Delete | ||

But TV cooking shows and social media platforms focused on cooking have helped generate interest in a variety of steak items. Adding to the fervor is the fact that more and more steakhouses in Korea were highlighted on cooking shows.

The number of single-person households in Korea has also increased, and single people often prefer to cook steaks rather than traditional beef soup and stew. With these cultural changes in mind, E-Mart, which operates 145 stores across Korea, recently redesigned its meat display cases for the first time in 25 years.
| 1 | Market | 2018-04-25 06:10:51 | 2025-08-06 20:38:18 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1175 | GB pig prices experienced little changes, says AHDB | The EU-spec SPP for the week ended 21 April stood at 145.27p/kg, a modest increase of 0.11p compared to the previous week, according to the analysis published by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). |
Abigail Schofeild, trainee analyst at AHDB, says that although there was a slight increase compared to the previous week, the latest quote is 10.89p behind year earlier levels as prices were following a strong upward trend this time in 2017. This is the largest year-on-year drop since June 2016.

In the week that ended 21 April estimated throughputs stood at 166,100 head. This represented a decrease of 4% compared to the previous week and on par with year earlier levels, despite slaughterings in 2017 being impacted by the Easter bank holiday.

Schofeild says that this is explained by somewhat tightened supplies, "perhaps suggesting the challenging winter is now feeding into weekly throughputs. Average carcase weights stood at 83.74kg, 150g below the week earlier. However, this was still over 200g ahead of year earlier levels."

The EU-spec APP rose to 148.41p/kg for the week ended 14 April. This was a week-on-week increase of 0.50p.
