1764 | Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Association receives $460,000 | Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Association is to receive $460,000 to improve the effectiveness, quality and sustainability of the fish and seafood sector. | <p>The Canadian Government announced that the financial support comes from the $400 million Atlantic Fisheries Fund, jointly funded by the federal, provincial and territorial governments, focused on growing opportunities and increasing market value for sustainably sourced, high-quality fish and seafood products from Atlantic Canada.</p> <p>Through the funding, Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Association will acquire data from two real-time monitoring buoys equipped with a suite of sensors. 1770 | Latvia reports swine fever outbreak in the Saldus Region | Latvian authorities have detected an African swine fever outbreak at a farm in the Saldus Region. | <p>The farm that was hit by the disease had four pigs. The Food and Veterinary Service of Latvia is now currently taking the necessary measure to prevent a spreading of the ASF. A protective zone has been established within a radius of three kilometers and also a surveillance zone within a ten kilometer radius, as reported by Latvijas Sabiedriskie Mediji.</p> <p>The pig producers living in the surveillance and protection area are forbidden to transport pigs from farm to farm and take them out of the protective zone.</p> <p>Other pets cannot be taken out of the area without a service inspector's permission.</p> <p>Latvia has first witnessed an outbreak of ASF in June 2014.</p> <p>The outbreak of the ASF on a farm, where the pig population reached 15,570, has become the largest in the country since 2014. 1771 | CPF boosted its revenue in Q2 through more exports | Thailand-based meat producer Charoen Pokphand Foods PCL (CPF) has announced an increase in its sales of 8% in the second quarter of 2018 thanks to a rise of 16% in its overseas sales. | <p>CPF reported total sales of Bt136.353 billion ($4.09 billion) in the second quarter of this year.</p> <p>The companny announced that it activates in 16 countries that account for 68% of the total sales while the domestic sales account for 27% and export from Thailand for 5%.</p> <p>Top three markets which generated main revenue included Thailand (32%), China (26%) and Vietnam (16%) These markets account for 74% of CPF’s total sales. </p> <p>In Q2, CPF’s year-on-year net profit jumped by 45% to Bt5.894 Billion ($176.8 million), and sky rocketed by 93% when compared with Q1 of this year. The improved net profit was largely resulted from Vietnam’s performance bounced back to normal state.</p> <p>Mr. Sooksunt Jiumjaiswanglerg, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Agro-Industrial Business and Co-President of CPF, said the company’s performance has been affected by oversupply of pork and chicken meats in Vietnam. The price problem also affected Thailand in the mid of last year.</p> <p>However, prices of those two kinds of meat better adjusted to cover cost in April last year. Particularly, pork price in Vietnam has been corrected to normal level which was an important factor to push brighter result operation in Q2.</p> <p>It is forecast that increasing price will further carry to next year. Pork and chicken prices have been rising continuously from Q1. The better prices will also be a factor to spur better result operation for the remaining year.</p> <p>CPF also added that the currency crisis in Turkey, which accounted for 3% of CPF total sales, is unlikely to affect its performance as the operation in Turkey is now focusing on domestic consumption. Moreover, the company has made some improvement in financial structure in early 2018. 1776 | Cargill opens new aquaculture innovation center in Indonesia | Cargill has opened an aquaculture innovation center in Indonesia to help raise fish farming standards. | <p>The Technology Application Center (TAC), located at Ciseeng, Parung-Bogor, is a hub for freshwater aquaculture in Indonesia. Cargill says it will bring global aquaculture best practices and expertise from Cargill’s network of 12 such centers dedicated to aquaculture worldwide.</p> <p>The TAC will also provide a platform where local aquaculture farmers can come for training and discussions around feeding and other farm management practices.</p> <p>“Freshwater aquaculture in Indonesia is showing strong growth thanks to increasing demand for seafood in the country,” said Chad Gauger, managing director of Cargill Aqua Nutrition in South Asia. “This innovation center will support the development of the freshwater aquaculture industry by educating and training farmers on how to improve their productivity and income.”</p> <p>The center covers one hectare, with eight large ponds and a set of closed cement tanks for smaller trials in closed systems. The facility is designed to improve the feed performance of freshwater fish varieties including catfish, tilapia, pangasius and carp. 1780 | UK's pork exports down in June | UK's fresh and frozen pork exports went down by 7% in June compared to year-earlier levels, totaling 16,700 tonnes, according to HMRC data analyzed by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). | <p>Tom Forshaw, AHDB analyst, said the export value also fell by 9% to £22.6 million as average prices declined by 2% to average £1.35/kg.</p> <p>Forshaw says that UK's overal decline appeared due to a decrease in shipments to the country's most important importers.</p> <p>Shipments to China and Hong Kong both recorded notable declines, with exports down 19% (-630 tonnes) and 58% (-550 tonnes) respectively.</p> <p>Trade with Denmark and the Netherlands was also reported to be considerably lower than in June 2017, falling by 1,140 tonnes altogether. 1783 | Cherkizovo to invest $119 million in its Penza enterprises | One of Russia's largest meat producers Cherkizovo Group has announced it will invest up to 8 billion rubles ($119 million) in its enterprises in the Penza region in the next five years. | <p>In the Penza region, Cherkizovo is the largest agricultural investor, Russian agency Prime reports.</p> <p>The Cherkizovo founder Igor Babayev said during a press conference last week that the region is a strategic partner of the group.</p> <p>"When we started working in the Russian agrarian sector, we went seriously to the Penza region, we managed to do a lot, but most importantly, we brought the process of creating pig farms to perfection ... 1784 | Northern Ireland has delivered its first consignment of beef to the Philippines in 22 years. | <p>The shipment amounted to 24 tonnes of beef which recently reached the capital Manila. As reported by BBC, the beef will be used in the catering sector.</p> <p>The estimated beef trade in the next five years between Northern Ireland and the Philippines is estimated to reach 5 million pounds.</p> <p>In 1996, the Philippine authorities imposed a ban on beef from the United Kingdom after an outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). 1785 | Belarus exported 19.3% more beef in H1 | Exports of fresh and chilled beef from Belarus have grown both in volume and value in the first six months of 2018. | <p>In the first half of this year, Belarus exported 55,000 tons of fresh and chilled beef, an increase in volume of 19.3% compared to year-earlier levels. 1787 | Tyson Foods is buying Keystone Foods for $2.16 Billion | Tyson Foods is acquiring Keystone Foods business from Marfrig Global Foods for $2.16 billion. | <p>The latest investment in Keystone is part of its growth strategy and expansion of its value-added protein capabilities.</p> <p>The acquisition includes six processing plants and an innovation center in the U.S. with locations in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Furthermore, Tyson Foods will also own eight plants and three innovation centers in China, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and Australia.</p> <p>Tyson Foods expects the acquisition to be accretive to GAAP EPS in the third year and accretive to adjusted EPS in the first year excluding transaction-related costs as well as the incremental depreciation and amortization associated with the transaction.</p> <p>The company expects to generate annual synergies of approximately $50 million by the third year of the acquisition, driven by operational efficiencies, procurement savings, distribution and supply network optimization and other opportunities.</p> <p>“Keystone is a leading global protein company and will be a great addition to Tyson Foods,” said Tom Hayes, president and CEO of Tyson Foods. “This acquisition will expand our international presence and value-added production capabilities and help us deliver more value to our foodservice customers. 1788 | WH Group shuts down one of its plants due to an ASF outbreak | Chinese pork producer WH Group was forced to shut down its operations at one of its major slaughterhouses after it detected an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF). | <p>The People's Government of Zhengzhou Municipality has ordered the producer to temporarily close its facility for a period of six weeks starting from August 16, 2018.</p> <p>This was the second case of ASF found in Zhengzhou of Henan province on August 14, when 30 hogs were reported dead out of a cart of 260 live hogs which were all supplied by an independent supplier to WH's Zhengzhou Slaughtering Factory. The company was forced to cull all of its animals at its slaughtering facility.</p> <p>The group said in a statement that the temporary closure of the Zhengzhou Slaughtering Factory was part of the epidemic prevention and control measures of the People’s Government of Zhengzhou Municipality. In light of the detection of African swine fever, Zhengzhou Shuanghui has taken active steps in order to prevent further spread of the swine disease including, among other things, setting up of a specialized body, euthanizing all live hogs at the Zhengzhou Slaughtering Factory and temporarily closing down the Zhengzhou Slaughtering Factory.</p> <p>The group announced that no other cases of African swine fever or other epidemic swine disease have been detected at its other slaughtering factories.</p> <p>Furthermore, WH Group said the operation of Zhengzhou Shuanghui only accounts for an insignificant portion of the entire operation of the Group and there will not be any disruption of the supply of pork and related products as a result of the temporary closure of the Zhengzhou Slaughtering Factory.</p> <p>According to Bloomberg, on Monday, WH Group's shares fell as much as 7%.</p> <p>The Chinese authorities have recently reported that a third case of ASF on Sunday. Bloomberg reports that this may be a cause of concern regarding the need to toughen inspection of meat imports. The outbreak was found in the eastern province of Jiangsu. 1790 | USDA is acquiring $60 M worth of chicken and beef | The United States Department of Agriculture has announced last week it will purchase approximatively $60 million worth of beef and chicken products to support food nutrition assistance programs. | <p>The purchased chicken products include whole bagged chicken, consumer split breast, and dark meat parts.</p> <p>Through this purchase, the USDA wants to encourage the continued domestic consumption of these products by diverting them from the normal channels of trade and commerce.</p> <p>“These purchases are part of the normal operations of administering Section 32 and are not related or associated with the authority or administration of possible purchases under Section 5 of the Commodity Credit Corporation related to trade mitigation,” USDA's statement read.</p> <p>USDA made the announcement just after it had already said it will also purchase $50 million worth of milk for welfare programs.</p> <p>“Today’s announcement will help in balancing the supply and demand situation in the market. As such, it will provide continued and improved employment in the poultry industry, underpin steadier family farm grower incomes, and enhance better feed demand for the on-coming expected bumper harvest of corn and soybeans," National Chicken Council President Mike Brown said in a statement.</p> <p>“It is a real victory for chicken producers, rural America and U.S. agriculture. But the real winners are the actual recipients of these programs that provide high-quality and nutritious chicken to financially-stressed families, group feeding kitchens, disaster-relief operations, schools and consumers needing food assistance,” Mr. Brown added.</p> <p>All the purchases are made through USDA's web-based supply chain management system. 1791 | Further growth for Japan's broiler meat production in 2018 | Japan's broiler meat production has reached 648,300 metric tons (mt) in the first five months of 2018, increasing by 3% compared with the corresponding period from 2017, according to official estimates from the Animal and Livestock Industries Corporation (ALIC) analyzed by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). | <p>In 2017, the country's total chicken slaughter was 772,480 birds yielding 1.661 million mt of meat, up 2% from 2016.</p> <p>According to USDA, 93% of chicken meat production came from broilers, while 6% came from spent hens and 1% from others such as local breeds.</p> <p>The total number of broiler producers was 2,270 in February 1, 2018, down 1.7% from 2017, according to data released by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF).</p> <p>USDA explained that Japan saw a growth in broiler meat production despite an overall decline in the number of operations. The decline was mainly in the smaller producers' category who's flocks were subsumed by mid to large sized operations. The large producer with 200,000 birds or more have increased by 2%. Meanwhile the number of operations with less than 200,000 birds dropped 5%.</p> <p>The Japanese broiler industry has went through a period of consolidation, as explained by USDA. Producers were able to introduce higher yield breeds which pushed the average broiler weights up 5.5% in the last decade, reaching 3.0 kg in 2017.</p> <p>FAS/Tokyo expects these trends to hold in 2018 and estimated that the overall chicken meat production to reach 1.695 million mt in 2018, increasing by 2% compared to 2017.</p> <p><strong>Japanese chicken meat imports on the rise</strong></p> <p>Japan imported 433,967 mt of chicken meat in the first five months of this year, up 11% compared to the similar period from 2017.</p> <p>In 2017, the country's total chicken meat imports reached 1.056 million mt of which 54% was raw meat and 46% was processed chicken products.</p> <p>Thailand and Brazil are Japan's main chicken meat suppliers and accounted for 80% of the country's total chicken imports in 2017. Most of the remaining volumes in that year was covered by the imports of processed chicken products from China.</p> <p>USDA says that because of a high demand the domestic production is unable to match it and Japanese processors are increasingly turning to imported chicken for further processing.</p> <p>FAS/Tokyo expects this trend to be maintained and forecasted that the Japanese chicken imports will grow to 1.080 million mt in 2018, up 2% from 2017.</p> <p><strong>USDA's outlook for the Japanese chicken meat market in 2019</strong></p> <p>USDA expects the chicken meat production in Japan to grow steadily and the country to further consolidate its industry.</p> <p>FAS/Tokyo projects overall production to grow 2% to 1.730 million mt in the following year. 1792 | Japan lifts the ban on poultry imports from Missouri, USA | The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries recently announced it has canceled the temporary import suspension measures for poultry and poultry meat imports from the Missouri state in the United States. | <p>The Japanese authorities have decided to lift the ban after they received confirmation that the state of Missouri is avian influenza free.</p> <p>"We have confirmed the cleanliness of the same disease in poultry in the same province by the information of the epidemic measures etc. of avian influenza in the state provided to the country by the United States Government.
