4255 Tyson Foods to build new plants in Asia China and Thailand are targeted as the main markets for international expansion.
Tyson Foods announced plans to build new production facilities in China and Thailand, and expand its facility in the Netherlands. The latest expansions, adding over 100,000 tonnes of fully cooked poultry capacity, build on the company’s global growth strategy to become the leader in protein by serving emerging markets and strategic customers.
“Global population and income growth will continue to drive an increased need for protein. These investments allow us to increase our in-country operations and global export capabilities, helping us bring more safe, high-quality protein for consumers in these countries as well as for customers in other parts of the world,” said Dean Banks, president and CEO of Tyson Foods.

The expansions are expected to create many direct and indirect jobs as production starts in local communities. The new plant in China is expected to create more than 700 jobs and the European expansion will add more than 150 jobs. Thailand’s new plant, part of a long-standing joint venture with GFPT Public Company Limited, is expected to bring more than 1,000 jobs.
“We have been aggressively building our overseas presence servicing foodservice and expanding into retail with innovative products. Our team recently launched the Tyson brand into key markets including in European foodservice and in Thailand retail through e-commerce. We invested in e-commerce platforms in Malaysia and Australia to meet consumer demand as COVID-19 accelerates e-commerce food delivery across the globe. The marketplace is changing, and we’re changing with it. We’ll continue to enhance our ability to serve growing global demand for value-added protein,” said Tyson Foods International President, Chris Langholz.

Tyson Foods’ recent acquisitions and joint ventures have expanded the company’s international footprint in China and India to include Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, South Korea, Netherlands, and Brazil, giving the company access to demand through in-country production, as well as exports to many global markets. In FY19, the company generated $5.4 billion in international sales, which included US export sales.
    Industry 2020-11-17 05:31:47 2025-08-12 18:48:04 Details Edit Delete
3842 Brazilian pork exports increase, beef slides China and Hong Kong remain the main markets for Brazilian pork, while beef producers are impacted by the closure of the European foodservice sector.
Brazilian pork exports grew up by 43.5% in the first quarter of 2020 compared with the same period of last year. The results were supported by increased demand from China and Hong Kong, the main markets for Brazilian pork, says data released by ABPA.
Poultry exports have increased by 6.64% reaching 74,080 tonnes. The modest results come as the European markets are flooded with local products due to closure of the foodservice sector in most of the EU member states.
At the same time, the COVID-19 crisis has impacted beef exports in the first three months of the year, which dropped by 5.86% totaling 22,496 tonnes. However, multiple plant shutdowns in the US may increase Brazilian beef exports in this market, as the North American country is facing a meat shortage in the next few months. It may also help Brazilian beef exporters to increase their market share in several Asian countries due to the disruption appeared in the American supply chain.
    Industry 2020-05-12 06:04:59 2025-08-12 17:48:24 Details Edit Delete
3195 Brazilian meat exports are rising on high demand from Asia China alone accounts for 28% of Brazilian pork exports and 13% of chicken.
According to the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), the volume of meat exported in the first 7 months of the year has increased constantly and the trend is to persist, considering the demand from Asian countries affected by ASF.
Poultry and pork are the most successful products exported by Brazilian producers to Asia, especially in the Chinese market, explained Francisco Turra, ABPA chairman. In fact, at this time, China accounts for 28.2% of Brazilian pork exports and 13% of chicken.
Until the end of July, Brazilian poultry exports have increased by 5.8% compared to the same period of 2018 to reach 2.34 million tonnes worth $4 billion, up by 10.8%.
Pork exports have reached a volume of 414,400 tonnes so far, up by 19.6% y-o-y. The recent increase in exports has been influenced by the drop in the Chinese pig herd, the world's largest, and by the trend of switching from pork to poultry seen in several Asian markets such as China, Vietnam, Japan.
    Market 2019-08-22 11:13:04 2025-08-12 14:01:01 Details Edit Delete
8730 Chile suspends the import of meat and livestock from Argentine Chile's Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) has decided to suspend the import of meat and animal products from Argentine Patagonia. This is a reaction to Senasa's decision to authorize the entry of bone-in beef from foot-and-mouth disease-free zones with vaccination south of the Patagonian barrier.
Although trade between the two countries had already been halted, the measure was formalized through Resolution No. 5952-2025-FA-Argentine-suspension, dated July 30.

At the end of June, through Resolution 460/2025, Senasa reopened, after 22 years, the possibility of transporting certain animal products to Patagonia from areas with vaccination. The measure applied to specific cuts such as ribs, roasts, and sternum, excluding long-bone cuts, such as ossobuco or bone-in loin.

For the Chilean SAG, this modification represents a substantial change in the conditions that initially motivated the recognition of foot-and-mouth disease-free status without vaccination for certain Argentine regions. Consequently, the agency decided to repeal this recognition, affecting meat exports from those areas to the Chilean market.

The suspension applies to the entry of animals and products that must comply with certification of origin from foot-and-mouth disease-free zones without vaccination, which in practice impacts specific areas in the north of the provinces of Neuquén and Río Negro. In Neuquén, the sanitary status is lost throughout the territory north of the Barrancas River and east of the border with Río Negro, except for a strip between Cutral-Có, Añelo, and Provincial Route 7. In Río Negro, this status is no longer recognized on the southern bank of the Río Negro, although some specific exceptions remain, such as the Valle Azul area or certain areas in the departments of Avellaneda and El Cuy.

Official sources confirmed that a Chilean health mission is expected to arrive in the coming weeks, with the goal of getting the market up and running again as soon as possible.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2025-08-11 00:05:43 2025-08-13 06:15:01 Details Edit Delete
5084 Historical record set by Paraguayan beef exports Chile, Russia, Brazil, Taiwan and Israel are the main markets for Paraguayan beef.
Over 283,214 tonnes of beef have been exported by Paraguay between January and October 2021, in what has become a historical record for the country, according to a report from the National Service for Animal Quality and Health (Senacsa). Beef exports for the first 10 months of 2021 are worth more than $1.3 billion, according to the official document.
Chile was the main market for beef produced in Paraguay, with 116,887 tonnes. It is followed by Russia (68,996 tonnes), Brazil (25,814 tonnes), Taiwan (25,429 tonnes) and Israel (15,339 tonnes). In 2022, Paraguay hopes to increase beef exports by adding the US market as one of the important destinations for these products. At the beginning of November, a delegation from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) arrived in the country for auditing the local beef industry to determine whether Paraguayan beef may enter the US market.
"We are very confident that we will pass the test. The United States has its processes and bureaucracies that must be considered, but after the November audit we are confident that we are going to export to that market," declared Mario Balmelli, chairman of the Rural Association of Paraguay (ARP) Meat Committee, quoted by the MercoPress newspaper. Paraguay hopes to obtain a similar quota of those granted to Uruguay and Argentina by the United States, 20,000 tonnes.
    Industry 2021-11-15 10:24:25 2025-08-12 14:48:34 Details Edit Delete
2393 Europe increased its mussel imports in the last few years Chile is the main supplier for the EU market, reveals a new study developed in France, the largest European importer of live and frozen mussels.
Mussel demand in the European market has increased in the last few years and imports from Chile are covering the consumption, especially in France, the largest European importer of live and frozen mussels.
Mussel farming in Chile has grown from a standing start in 2000 to become a force to be reckoned with, and now has an annual production of more than 300,000 metric tons, announced Seafood Source magazine quoting a study released by Via-Aqua.
According to FAO Fishstat, world production of mussels has grown steadily since the mid-1970s to reach 2 million MT in 2016. The five largest players are China with 879,000 MT per year, Chile with 302,000 MT, Spain with 216,000 MT, Thailand with 115,000 MT, and New Zealand with 94,000 MT. The whole of Europe produces 470,000 MT, with Italy at 67,000 MT, France at 57,000 MT, and the Netherlands at 54,000 MT. South Korea, a relative newcomer to mussel-farming, now produces 55,000 MT per year.
Consumers in Europe are demanding especially the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis). Mussels represent nearly one-third of all aquaculture products sold in the European Union. European production has fallen slightly, while consumption has increased, hence the rise in imports from outside the European Union. France imports live mussels from other European countries, particularly the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain. Smaller imports are taken from countries including England, Scotland, Ireland and Denmark. Imports of frozen mussels in various formats originate in Chile and New Zealand. The majority of mussel consumption by French consumers occurs at home, rather than in restaurants, despite the ubiquity of “moules et frites” (mussels and chips) on French menus.
    Industry 2019-01-08 09:09:00 2025-08-13 05:50:44 Details Edit Delete

2706 QMS points to the British Parliament: You still have to reach a deal! Chief Executive Alan Clarke welcomed clarity on the tariff arrangements but relayed his disappointment in the time it had taken for this critical information to be published.
The UK Government’s temporary import tariff regime in the case of a no-deal Brexit paints a mixed picture for Scotland's red meat sector, according to Chief Executive Alan Clarke. Despite the vote where MPs rejected a no-deal Brexit, a deal still needs to be achieved by 29 March in order to avoid an unregulated exit from the EU. Nevertheless, applying tariffs to imported beef, sheepmeat and pigmeat is seen as a reassuring measure that suggests there would be a defence against a sudden rush of product from low-cost producing nations, said Alan Clarke.
"However, the introduction of a temporary tariff rate quota for beef at zero tariff open to any country, plus the continuation of existing tariff rate quotas for non-EU product like New Zealand lamb and some beef categories, mean that most of the deliveries of beef and sheepmeat to the UK will be as business as usual. The exception is pigmeat products where modest import tariffs will be applied and will offer some support for domestic market prices", considers Mr Clarke.
He emphasized that the most potentially concerning proposal for domestic producers is that the announcement makes clear that any new tariff arrangements will not apply to direct trade between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
"The provision has been made for unconstrained movement of product directly from the Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland, while the proposed new tariff rate quota could also be used for direct shipments of beef from Ireland to the UK. The monitoring of these two trade flows will be crucial to avoid unintended consequences for Scotland’s red meat products,” said Mr Clarke.
Still, tariffs can protect to some extent the UK red meat sector but the challenge of market access to Europe and globally for all red meat products, which is of particular concern to the sheepmeat sector, remains unresolved, observes QMS Chief Executive.
    Industry 2019-03-14 13:38:51 2025-08-12 23:44:16 Details Edit Delete
4596 US meat industry shows resilience after Q1 Chicken meat, beef and pork are enjoying strong demand from shoppers.
Despite the COVID-19 crisis, 2021 shows positive signs for the US meat industry, according to the quarterly report issued by CoBank. The US economy continues to outperform expectations as stimulus funds are fueling robust consumer spending. Consensus forecasts point to 7% GDP growth for 2021, the fastest rate of expansion since 1984. Inflation is inevitable, however, as the 2020 price declines will widen year-over-year inflation over the next two quarters, and new upward price pressure should push headline inflation above 3%.
The transition to a less COVID-restricted world has begun. But for the economy and rural industries, there will be no going back to pre-COVID conditions. A transformed policy environment and awakened commodity markets are making way for a whole new operating environment, according to the new Quarterly report from CoBank's Knowledge Exchange.
So far, in the first three months of the year, the animal protein market has performed well. US chicken prices started 2021 on a high note, climbing over 20% in the first quarter. These prices offset the double-digit rate of feed cost inflation and brought spot margins well into positive territory. The counts of eggs set and chick placements are a leading indicator that chicken production will remain at current levels, so chicken prices continue to look strong through the summer. Expected increases in vacation and business travel this summer will boost food service sales, benefiting the chicken sector.

US beef demand has been incredibly strong in the first quarter despite the challenges in food service and the away-from-home dining sector. Strong demand and expectations for limited supply growth in the back half of 2021 have driven up cattle futures. The USDA expects beef production to decline by 3.5% in the second half of 2021, which has helped lift cattle prices nearly 15% above year-ago levels. Packer margins remain elevated, but producers are expected to realize better margins in the second half of 2021.

Strong first-quarter demand for pork, coupled with indications of limited supply growth, has lifted hog sector profitability to levels not seen in many years. Concerns over feed and other cost inflation have taken a back seat to optimism for another year of strong pork exports and robust domestic demand as US consumer behavior slowly returns to normal. China has slowed its hog herd rebuilding due to increased ASF cases this winter, helping drive the positive outlook for the remainder of the year.
    Market 2021-04-09 11:34:32 2025-08-12 19:09:16 Details Edit Delete
4183 Meat consumption is rising in the Netherlands Chicken meat was the main driver for increased consumption seen last year.
The Dutch have increased their meat consumption for the second year in a row in 2019, reaching to 39 kg per person, according to a study conducted by Wageningen Economic research for animal welfare organisation Wakker Dier. However, some of the experts involved in the research are sure that the increase of almost 0.50 kg in meat consumption is predominantly down to tourists and occasional meat-eaters or flexitarians who go to restaurants and fast-food outlets.
"It looks as if the flexitarians do their best at home but forget their good intentions when they go out," commented Wageningen researcher Hans Dagevos, quoted by the Dutch News website. "
Chicken is the main driver of last year’s increase and the Dutch now eat an estimated 200 million chickens a year. "This is a very worrying trend at a time when every problem we face requires less meat consumption, from climate change to nitrogen emissions, deforestation, the effects on health and last but not least the treatment of the animals themselves," said Anne Hilhorst from Wakker Dier.
Dagevos and his colleagues expect that next year’s figures will clarify the extent of the effect on meat consumption from tourists and flexitarians, seeing that many restaurants have had to close their doors in 2020 because of coronavirus. ‘If meat consumption outside the home is the determining factor we should perhaps focus more on helping flexitarians,’ Hilhorst said. The official recommendation in the Netherlands is to eat no more than of 500 grams of red meat a week.

    Industry 2020-10-26 05:18:15 2025-08-13 02:04:16 Details Edit Delete
3194 Chinese poultry sector to increase production by 15% Chicken meat production in the country is expected to reach almost 16 million tonnes in 2020 as the consumers are shifting away from expensive pork products.
Due to the ASF situation in China, pork prices have jumped by more than 35% in the last 5 month and the trend is expecting to continue as the national herd is going to shink further. Poultry will represent the main substitute for pork, according to USDA experts in Beijing. Their latest outlook for the Chinese poultry market shows that production is expected to grow by 15% in the 12 months, reaching to 15.96 million. At the same time, poultry imports will increase by at least 20% to reach 600,000 tonnes.
"Feed companies responding to the declining swine feed demand have switched their feed formulas normally meant for pigs to chicken, given the reduced swineherd. Ample feed supplies will support this current poultry expansion," mentioned the report from USDA's office in Beijing, quoted by Agricensus.
Furthermore, some traditional Chinese pork producers are now expanding into white-feather chicken production in other to take advantage of the boom.

Brazil is expected to be the leading exporter of chicken to China, followed by Thailand and France. US imports have been embargoed since 2014 after an outbreak of avian flu in the country and a reconsideration of the ban is unlikely as the two countries are currently in the middle of a trade war.
    Industry 2019-08-22 09:53:39 2025-08-13 02:49:21 Details Edit Delete
5225 Unusual situation in the Romanian meat market Chicken meat prices are well above the most consumed meat in the country, pork.
There is a situation never seen before in the Romanian meat market: chicken meat prices are going up, while pig meat is taking a dive that threatens the swine sector, already brought to its knees by the ongoing African swine fever outbreak. According to Eurostat data, live pig prices in Romania are about RON 5 (€1.00)/kg and €150 per 100 kilos in carcass. Meantime, the average live chicken prices are RON 6 (€1.20)/kg and chicken meat carcass has reached €200/100kg.
"For 20 years I worked in promoting meat and meat industry and I never experienced such a twisted turn in prices. It is a reflection of the dramatic situation faced by the swine sector in the country. Currently, Romania imports more than 80% of the pig meat consumed domestically and the national inventory in commercial farms has dropped dramatically. From 14 million pigs prior to the ASF crisis, Romania reported at the end of last year just 2 million swine head in its farms. This is atypical for a market where pork is traditionally the main animal protein consumed", commented Eugen Capra, CEO of CARNEXPO and CARNEXPO Grill.
The difference is reflected even in retail, where fresh chicken meat (even dark meat) is clearly competing in prices with the most valuable muscle parts of pork. Inside the European Union, a few years ago, Romania stood as of the Top 10 pig producers of the block. Since 2018, however, the decline of the Romanian swine sector was visible for everyone. A combination of multiple ASF outbreaks and the authorities' lack of interest in solving this biosecurity crisis led to the current situation in the meat market. At the same time, it is worth mentioning that the EU it is facing a time of oversupply in pig meat, as Germany, due to its own ASF crisis, has lost access to some of the most lucrative markets in the world: China, the Philippines, Japan, South Korea. More than 350,000 tonnes of pork have been pushed from Germany to EU member states confronted with huge deficit of pork, such as Romania, Bulgaria and Poland. At the same time, another ASF outbreak reported recently in Italy can create a vertigo effect in the EU pork market, dropping prices to levels never seen in the last decades.
Meantime, a constant pressure of Avian Influenza cases reported for the last few years in the EU poultry sector has increased prices for chicken, turkey and duck meat. From 2020 until now, Poland, the most important poultry producer in the EU had more than 400 bird flu outbreaks, France reported 150 outbreaks only this winter, Spain is also threatened by the spreading disease, while Italy culled almost 4 million birds in farms in November-December last year. From this perspective, a rise in poultry prices is not a surprise for anyone. So far, the Romanian poultry sector wasn't hit hard by bird flu spread all over the continent bi migratory birds and that may partially explain the price increase. "To be fair, I think that Romanian authorities may start to worry about the country's food self-sufficiency, especially in the animal protein sector," Mr. Capra concluded.
    Market 2022-01-14 11:12:08 2025-08-13 02:31:32 Details Edit Delete

5285 3% decline in poultry production expected in China Chicken meat consumption will drop but imports will rise slightly.
Poultry production in China is expected to drop by 3% this year, according to an outlook from USDA. A similar forecast was issued by the Chinese government in which poultry production is expected to drop at pre-2020 levels, reaching 14.3 million tonnes. Consumption is also expected to drop at 14.6 million tonnes of chicken due to low prices of pork, less optimistic economic outlook and adverse effects on the hotel, restaurant and institutions (HRI) sector from government measures introduced to control outbreaks of COVID-19.
Imports will see a slight increase from 2021, reaching 800,000 tonnes of poultry, as China will maintain the same rate of exports to Hong Kong, Japan, other countries from South East Asia, or even the Netherlands as in 2021. 2819 Vietnam plans to increase poultry production Chicken meat consumption is still low but that could change due to the ASF virus spreading into the country.
Vietnam is looking to increase poultry production in the coming years, as ASF outbreaks threaten to pave the way for a massive liquidation in the national pig inventory. In 2018, pork accounted for 65% of Vietnamese meals while the chicken was just 20%, according to Vietnam News agency.
Officials are expecting an increase in poultry consumption in the coming months, as the ASF virus is spreading from province to province. Also, rising demand from China can stimulate the Vietnamese poultry industry, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Last year, poultry production increased to almost 1 million tonnes of meat and 11 billion eggs.
"It is necessary to focus on production to meet quality standards at home and abroad. This would create favourable conditions for domestic poultry products to meet hygiene and safety standards in export markets such as Japan, Republic of Korea and some ASEAN countries", declared Phung Duc Tien, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. In the last couple of years, the Vietnamese poultry sector has developed through joint ventures with foreign companies to open new markets. Nevertheless, a possible increased demand in the domestic market, current free trade agreements and big opportunies in the Chinese market are expected to increase poultry production in Vietnam.
    Industry 2019-04-16 08:25:51 2025-08-13 01:34:20 Details Edit Delete
3844 The US, Australia and Argentina ranked as top three meat-eating countries Chicken is the most consumed meat, followed by beef and pork, reveals a recent Statista study.
The US is the country of meat lovers, ranking No. 1 in a top comprising the main meat-eating countries in the world. However, the Argentinian model of consumption has changed drastically in the last couple of years, switching from beef to poultry as the purchasing power in the country has dropped and beef prices have spiked due to increased demand from China in 2019.
The top also comprises Israel (88.5 kg), Brazil (77 kg), New Zealand (74.8 kg), Chile (74.3 kg) and Canada wit per capita consumption of 69 kg. With the exception of Israel, the rest of the countries are also main producers of meat and have a culture on meat consumption.
    Industry 2020-05-12 08:15:06 2025-08-12 20:05:35 Details Edit Delete
6669 US: Value, taste and health outweigh price for chicken purchases Chicken is positioned to satisfy Gen X and Millennials as they assume the grocery buying power.
Ninety-five percent of the U.S. consumers said that price per pound and overall price are more important or as important compared to a year ago when purchasing fresh chicken, according to research presented at the 2023 Chicken Marketing Summit. Fresh chicken is the protein of choice because it delivers value, taste and contributes to a healthful lifestyle, even as consumers react to inflationary pressures.

The National Chicken Council (NCC) and WATT Global Media presented the results of a study that focused on current and anticipated U.S. consumer behavior, specifically, consumption of fresh chicken. Circana provided supporting data from its retail databases. The results suggested several opportunities for chicken to maintain market share.

The study was commissioned by NCC and conducted online by Circana June 22 – 27, 2023, among 520 U.S. adults. Funding was provided by Elanco Animal Health, Evonik Animal Nutrition, NCC and WATT Global Media.

Generations differ

Younger consumers have different drivers for choosing chicken. Organic and antibiotic-free claims are more important to younger consumers compared to a year ago, while Boomers place less importance on these.

"More than three-quarters of Millennials reported that chicken is their favorite protein in a home-cooked meal", reported Joyce Neth, Watt Global Media.

In addition, organic and antibiotic-free claims are more important purchase drivers for Millennials, even as they face rising prices with other purchases. "Millennials and Gen Z are organic natives,” said Neth, "they have grown up with organics’ halo of ‘better for me and better for the planet’ and are willing to make tradeoffs in other purchases to buy organic chicken".

According to data provided by Erkin Peksoz, Circana, this commitment to organic chicken is reflected in increased dollar sales and decreased volume. Peksoz said, "organic share has been declining since first quarter 2022 but is still above 2020 levels".

Peksoz presented data that shows that Millennials over-index for chicken and under-index for pork, beef and turkey compared to Boomers. "Chicken is well-positioned with the generations that will soon have more income to spend", he added.

Eating at home

In the survey, 95% of those surveyed say they will eat at home more or the same amount in the next six months compared to previous six months. Further, 78% say they will continue or increase eating at the homes of friends and family and 50% will host dinner parties at their home.

Chances are high that these meal occasions will include fresh chicken. Weekday dinner is the most popular meal occasion including fresh chicken. 84% have prepared a weekday dinner with fresh chicken, followed by 62% preparing weekend dinner with fresh chicken. Top reasons cited for cooking fresh chicken are easy, delicious and healthy.

Expanding the definition of health

In this year’s findings, health was among the top reasons selected, yet nutritious and leaner were selected by fewer respondents.

"While we typically associate those characteristics with health, it’s clear that consumers are seeing more than those aspects as part of 'healthy'", said Neth. “Other research has shown that today’s consumers view health as overall well-being, including mental health, minimizing stress and occasionally indulging cravings. Many recipes for 'comfort food' include chicken".

Telling the sustainability story

Among a list of attributes, just four of ten respondents said they associated "more environmentally friendly and sustainable than other types of protein" with chicken. However, twice as many, or eight in ten, associated that attribute with plant-based meat alternatives.

"Chicken has a great sustainability story that must be told so that consumers, particularly those organic natives, can see this is another way that chicken aligns with their values", said Tom Super, National Chicken Council.
    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2023-08-16 00:15:03 2025-08-13 03:36:16 Details Edit Delete
927 Cobb Vantress to invest $58 million in a poultry farm in New Zealand Chicken has become one of the favourite meat among the locals and the industry is growing.

A land sale of 149 hectares for the company Cobb Vantress has been approved by the Overseas Investment Office of New Zealand. The British poultry producer, owned by Tyson Foods, intends to invest $58 million in a farm just outside Huntly. The farm will create 100 new jobs when it will be open, in 2019, according to Stuff.co.nz portal.
The poultry industry in New Zealand is thriving since the locals have developed a taste for the chicken meat. In fact, in 2017 chicken breast has replaced beef mince as locals' favourite meat. The industry has reported a production of 118 million birds last year, three million more than in 2016.
Three areas are renowned for the number of the poultry farms: Waikato (93), Canterbury (84), and Auckland (81). Still, the biggest poultry farm, Mainland Poultry, is located in Dunedin, on the South Island of New Zealand. Last year, the farm was bought by Australian equity firm Navis Capital for $350 million.
    Industry 2018-03-12 10:50:43 2025-08-12 12:51:53 Details Edit Delete
6987 Redefining smart standards in bone detection Chicken breast and thigh fillet as well as further processed products made from them are becoming ever more popular. Consumers, retailers and further processors are, however, becoming increasingly intolerant of bone remnants in deboned meat. To protect their hard-won reputation, processors, further processors and retailers want to be sure that the deboned products, which they are delivering to the consumer, are in fact completely bone-free.
Marel launched SensorX, its bone detection machine, in 2007. In that time, much has changed. Globally, the quantity of chickens deboned has grown significantly and labor is now both more expensive and less available. The machine too has undergone continuous development and there have been major advances in what SensorX can see and how it interprets this information.

Today, SensorX can pick up bone fragments down to 2mm. The machine will detect over 99% of bone remnants and will also see hard foreign material such as metal, stone and glass.

At 3%, SensorX has the lowest level of false positives of any detection equipment on the market. This is due to the smart algorithms used, which increase the rate at which bone fragments are spotted while reducing the number of false positives. False positives mean unnecessary additional labor, as all deboned meat rejected by detection equipment has to be checked. There is also the risk of over-trimming, which impacts negatively on yield. Too many false positives also mean that data generated by the equipment cannot be relied upon.

The systems are easy to operate. Calibration is automatic. The software of SensorX has recently been updated to give a single program for all sizes and types of products. Unlike traditional methods used by most bone detection systems, SensorX offers automatic adaptation based on product thickness. Instead of requiring manual program switching for each product type, SensorX maintains high performance by adjusting the bone detection level to the thickness of the specific product being scanned. This innovation eliminates the need for constant program changes by operators. All this happens completely automatically and always gives a perfect result. There is no longer the risk of human error.

Marel designs its equipment to be robust to withstand production pressures in high-volume, multi-shift poultry processing plants. Motors, sensor, scrapers and rollers have recently been uprated to give a longer service life and lower cost of ownership.
Operator safety has not been forgotten either. The latest SensorX systems sport new covers and a new safety system, which fully meets the latest safety at work legislation.

Marel has chosen SensorX as one of the first pieces of equipment to receive SmartBase software as standard. This software provides both historical and real-time information on the state of the equipment and how it has performed. Besides giving fully comprehensive production data, SmartBase also informs on technical issues such as key temperatures, calibration and sensor run time. This information is presented on an integral dashboard but can be accessed at any time and from anywhere, laptop, web browser, tablet or phone. Any issues with the equipment can therefore be identified and remedied with a minimum of delay without having to stand in front of the machine.

SensorX is a fine example of Marel’s practice of intelligently linking equipment to provide synergy: the solutions are more than the sum of their individual components. This is why SensorX plays a crucial part in the entire breast fillet distribution process. It is not only there to guarantee bone-free products, but also to add weight and positioning information to the dataset of each product. The distribution system, including Innova ProFlow Breast Meat, uses the data generated by SensorX to assign each individual fillet to its best possible destination, ensuring a seamless match with order intake. In this way, SensorX significantly enhances the synergy among all systems and software connected to the breast fillet distribution process.

As more and more products are deboned, retailers and fast-food manufacturers become ever more demanding and labor becomes ever more expensive and less available, the future for detection equipment is bright indeed. Data-driven equipment will become smarter at spotting contaminants, which could include the wood, cartilage and plastic contaminants not picked up today. Efforts will also continue to reduce the number of false positives still further.
    Technology adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2023-12-23 00:05:50 2025-08-12 06:47:13 Details Edit Delete
