2458 | Brazilian halal food exports reached $5 billion milestone | Chicken and beef production are the major items responsible for the sector's high revenue. |
Brazilian halal food exports have registered a growth of 10% in the last year, reaching $5 billion, according to Fambras Halal, one of the largest certification company in the country.
Chicken meat and beef are the main factors that were responsible for this performance, even if 2018 wasn't the quietest year for the meat industry in Brazil. "We failed to grow more as we had a very complicated year", admitted Ali Hussein El Zoghbi, vice-president of Fambras Halal, who mentioned the truckers' strike last May and the "Rotten Meat" scandal as two of the elements that had a negative impact in the country's halal food exports, reported Salaam Gateway.
Still, Brazil remains by far the world's largest exporter of halal meat, which complies with Muslim dietary rules.
Brazilian chicken meat exports totalled 4,100 million tonnes in 2018, according to the Brazilian Association of Animal Proteins (ABPA), down by 5.1% compared to the previous year. At the same time, the South American country totalled a volume of 1,3 million tonnes of beef exported. China was the main destination for Brazilian beef exports, with 322,000 tonnes, followed by Hong Kong (277,000) and Egypt (171,000). Top 10 markets for beef export also include countries such as Chile (114,000), Iran (84,000), Saudi Arabia (41,900), UAE (35,500), Italy (28,800), Philippines (26,500) and Libany (18,200). The rest of the world accounts for 233,200 tonnes in last year's Brazilian beef exports. The total exceeded the previous year figures by 148,000 tonnes.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-01-18 13:40:50 | 2025-08-11 17:10:10 | Details Edit Delete | ||

2815 | German poultry industry seeks support from politicians | Cheap poultry imported from Eastern Europe have entered the market and threatens the animal welfare standards. |
The German poultry sector is at risk of losing 30% of businesses in the next 5 years if the cheap imports from Eastern Europe are going to further flood the market, said a board member of ZDG ( Central Association of the German Poultry Industry).
Members of the association claim that imported poultry has entered the large consumer segment restaurants, canteens, industrial kitchens, which accounts for 65% of sales in the German market, informs Fleischwirtshaft magazine.
At this point, the country's self-sufficiency rate in poultry has declined to 73% in turkey, 15% for geese and between 90-95% in chicken. "With every kilogram of poultry meat imported from Eastern Europe, less animal welfare comes to Germany", mentioned ZDG President Friedrich-Otto Ripke.
"If we continue like this, we will lose 30% of businesses in the next five years", said ZDG board member Paul-Heinz Wesjohann.
The association is asking for complete reimbursement of additional costs for more animal welfare, a targeted and practical solution for the conflict of objectives between animal welfare and environmental protection, a mandatory labelling of origin for poultry meat in the catering trade.
Ukraine is seen as one of the producers who has disturbed the poultry market in the EU but there is also constant pressure from other countries such as Poland, Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria who have increased poultry production lately.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-04-15 06:30:04 | 2025-08-11 22:54:55 | Details Edit Delete | ||
