2458	Brazilian halal food exports reached $5 billion milestone	Chicken and beef production are the major items responsible for the sector's high revenue.	<p>Brazilian halal food exports have registered a growth of 10% in the last year, reaching $5 billion, according to Fambras Halal, one of the largest certification company in the country.<br />Chicken meat and beef are the main factors that were responsible for this performance, even if 2018 wasn't the quietest year for the meat industry in Brazil. "We failed to grow more as we had a very complicated year", admitted Ali Hussein El Zoghbi, vice-president of Fambras Halal, who mentioned the truckers' strike last May and the "Rotten Meat" scandal as two of the elements that had a negative impact in the country's halal food exports, reported <a href="https://www.salaamgateway.com/en/story/brazils_2018_halal_food_exports_may_hit_5_billion_certification_firm-SALAAM15012019233542/">Salaam Gateway</a>.<br />Still, Brazil remains by far the world's largest exporter of halal meat, which complies with Muslim dietary rules.<br />Brazilian chicken meat exports totalled 4,100 million tonnes in 2018, according to the Brazilian Association of Animal Proteins (ABPA), down by 5.1% compared to the previous year. At the same time, the South American country totalled a volume of 1,3 million tonnes of beef exported. China was the main destination for Brazilian beef exports, with 322,000 tonnes, followed by Hong Kong (277,000) and Egypt (171,000). Top 10 markets for beef export also include countries such as Chile (114,000), Iran (84,000), Saudi Arabia (41,900), UAE (35,500), Italy (28,800), Philippines (26,500) and Libany (18,200). The rest of the world accounts for 233,200 tonnes in last year's Brazilian beef exports. 7771	Cattle close higher, lean hogs fall ahead of USDA report	Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) feeder and live cattle futures turned higher on Thursday, last week, as technical trading, a steady cash market and weakness in grain futures gave cattle contracts a boost, Reuters reported, citing traders.	<p style="font-weight: 400;">Meanwhile, hog futures continued to turn lower on profit-taking two days after the most-active December contract reached its highest since June 3, and as traders squared positions ahead of a key government report.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">CME December lean hog futures settled down 0.975 cent at 73.925 cents per pound and February hogs ended down 0.800 cent at 77.825 cents.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">CME most-active December live cattle settled up 0.500 cent at 184.825 cents per pound and the spot October contract ended up 1.050 cents at 184.100 cents.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">But continued weakness in wholesale beef prices capped gains. The US Department of Agriculture priced choice cuts of boxed beef on Thursday morning at $296.64 per hundredweight (cwt), down $1.53 from Wednesday. Select cuts fell by 35 cents at $282.93 per cwt.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The USDA reported Thursday’s cattle slaughter at 124,000 head, up from 122,000 head a week earlier.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Feeder cattle futures ended higher with the November contract finishing up 0.925 cent at 244.975 cents per pound.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">After the market closed Thursday, USDA said in its quarterly hogs and pigs report that the US hog herd as of September 1 was 76.5 million head, up slightly from a year earlier and up almost 2% from June 1. </p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The report showed the number of hogs kept for breeding was close to trade expectations, and the number of pigs per litter continued to grow.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Ahead of Thursday’s quarterly hog report, analysts surveyed by Reuters on average expected the government to report the US hog herd as of Sept. 1 at 76.285 million head, up 0.2% from a year earlier. 174	British duck breeder acquired by two Chinese companies	Cherry Valley Farm, a top British poultry company which supplies Peking ducks, has been acquired by Beijing Capital Agribusiness Group and CITIC Agriculture.	<p> </p> <p>Navis Capital Partners has sold its controlling interest in Anatis UK Limited (“Cherry Valley Group” or “CVF”) to the consortium of the China-based strategic investors.</p> <p>Although the details of the transaction have not yet been made public, a knowledgeable source told Caixin that the deal is worth 1.5 billion yuan (227 million dollars).</p> <p>The acquisition also includes Cherry Valley's breeding technologies and patents.</p> <p>David Ireland, Senior Partner at Navis Capital, commented: "Cherry Valley is an outstanding, cutting edge genetics business with an industry leading position. 125	Cherkizovo will export halal poultry products to Iraq	Cherkizovo, the largest meat and feed producer from Russia, announced that it has received permission to export poultry products to Iraq, from the Vasilyevskaya poultry farm.	<p>The Vasilyevskaya poultry farm, the largest poultry production facility of the Cherkizovo Group, will export to Iraq, one of the largest markets in the Middle East, after Chrerkizovo has gotten the approval from the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture in August 2017.</p> <p>The Vasilyevskaya poultry farm will only export halal meat to the country, according to the requirements set by the Iraqi Government, which are very strict.</p> <p>“The slaughter facilities at the Vasilyevskaya poultry farm comply with these rules, according to certification from the Halal International Centre for Standardisation and Certification of the Council of Muftis of Russia. 3958	Russian poultry producer up for sale	Cherkizovo, Mirator and CP Foods are biding to buy some of the assets Prioskolie is willing to sale.	<p>Agricultural holding Prioskolie is putting up for sale some of the assets, including its poultry production and processing sites in a deal that is expected to worth at least $390 million, according to local newspaper Kommersant.</p> <p>Prioskolie ranks third in the Russian poultry market, with a total production of 452,000 tonnes reported last year. That stands for 7.3% of the country's poultry production.<br />So far, Cherkizovo, Miratorg and Thailand's CP Foods have shown interest in making a bid for the assets that Prioskolie intends to sell. If completed, the deal will represent the largest M&A operation in the last 5 years in Russia. 149	Cherkizovo ranks as the top meat producer in Russia	Cherkizovo occupies the first spot in the 2016 Agroinvestors ranking of Russia's top meat producers, according to the company's statement.	<p> </p> <p>The new ranking is comprised of 25 companies, which produced 4.3 million tons of meat last year. This amounts to 43% of all meat produced in Russia.</p> <p>The top five companies haven't changed since last year, this stability reflecting the constant consolidation of the meat market, " including an increase in the market power of large vertically integrated agricultural holdings." These companies also strengthened their positions through M&A.</p> <p>The Agroinvestors analysts forecast that the top three ranking will remain unchanged in the following years. 1527	Cherkizovo to invest $300m in a new sausage production facility	Cherkizovo is to invest 25 billion rubles ($300 million) in building a sausage production facility in Kashira, Moscow.	<p>The new plant is set to completed this year. The facility will have a production capacity of 80 tons of sausages per day, Abireg reports.</p> <p>"This is the first stage of the project, in 2017 an agreement was signed at the SPIEF. By 2021, the second stage will be completed - this is another 300 jobs. By 2022 one more stage will add about 100 jobs, investments in the first stage amounted to more than 6 billion rubles. The total investment will be more than 25 billion rubles, "- said the head of the investment block Denis Butsaev.</p> <p>The second stage of the project consists in an investment of 3 billion rubles into a plant for the production of ready-to-eat meat products or semi-finished products with a capacity of up to 200 tons per day.</p> <p>In 2022 Cherkizovo intends to put into operation a distribution center with an area of ??65 thousand square meters, with refrigerated warehouses, as well as a line for slicing and packing sausages. The volume of investments is 6 billion rubles.</p> <p>And in 2024 it is planned to finish the construction and put into operation a factory for the production of ham and sausages with a capacity of up to 600 tons per day. 3862	China opens its market for Russian turkey	Cherkizovo has sent already the first batch of 27 tonnes of turkey wigs to mainland China and hopes to double its overall turkey exports for 2020.	<p>Turkey products from Russia are now allowed to enter the Chinese market and the largest poultry producer in the country hopes to double its overall turkey exports for 2020. The first turkey shipment weighed in at 27 tonnes and was sent to China from Tambov Turkey, a joint venture between Cherkizovo Group and Spain’s Grupo Fuertes. The shipment included turkey wing pieces that are very popular in retail chains throughout China. <br />In a move expected to more than double its overall turkey exports, Cherkizovo is going to ship about 2,000 tonnes of turkey to China by the end of 2020. Last year, the Group exported around 1,500 tonnes globally.</p> <p>China is Cherkizovo's key export market. Poultry exports to the Asian country started in May 2019. By the end of the year, 14,000 tonnes had been shipped to China, accounting for more than 40% of that year's total poultry exports. This year, Cherkizovo plans to push this amount to over 50,000 tonnes.</p> <p>“Despite the impact of coronavirus on global food trade, Cherkizovo's poultry exports to China have been on the rise in recent months, with regular monthly volumes reaching some 5,000 tonnes or more. CHERKIZOVO 77, a brand we use for products made at various facilities across the Group, has gained both trust and traction among our Chinese customers, including distributors and meat processors,” commented Andrei Terekhin, Head of Exports at Trading Company Cherkizovo. The new line produces 33 tonnes of mixed feeds per hour.</p> <p>The total capacity of the plant increased to 85 tons per hour. 2397	Russian meat giant acquired a 75% stake in Samson - Food Products		<p>The company has signed a sale-purchased agreement to acquire 75% of St Petersburg-based Samson – Food Products (SFP).</p> <p>Cherkizovo said in a statement that the acquisition is approved by the Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS), the cost reaching RUB350 million, with ca. RUB550 million (€7.1 million) in debt to be assumed on top. The final price will be based on SFP’s performance in 2019.</p> <p>This deal is set to strengthen Cherkizovo’s position in St Petersburg and the North-Western Federal District (NWFD) – a region that the Group has been closely focused on since 2017. In exchange for 1,175,000 new shares issued by the Group and valued at RUB 3.6 bn (€41.50 million) during a public offering. As a result, Grupo Fuertes’ stake in the authorized capital of Cherkizovo Group rose from 8.58 % to 11.12 %.</p> <p>Cherkizovo Group’s consolidation of 100 % in Tambov Turkey was approved by the Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia in December. The legal advisor of the transaction was Cleary Gottlieb.</p> <p>The Tambov Turkey joint venture was established by Cherkizovo Group and Grupo Fuertes on a parity basis in 2012. Its first stage was launched in 2015, and in 2017 it started offering Pava-Pava-branded products, such as chilled chop meat and ready-to-cook products with natural spices. In the summer of 2020, the second stage of Tambov Turkey was launched to increase its total annual capacity to 85,000 tonnes of meat products. 1734	CPF to reduce plastic in its packaging	Charoen Pokphand Foods PCL (CPF) considers design of packaging as one of the factor to help reduce environmental impacts.	<p>The company has changed from petroleum-based plastic “Polyethylene Terephthalate” (PET) to plant-based and biodegradable packing “Polylactic Acid” (PLA) in food products particularly fresh chicken and pork, the first time in Thailand. This transformation reduced greenhouse gas emission 83% and equivalent to the switching off 12 million electric lights in one hour. </p> <p>During 2007-2017, The company’s paper and plastic usage was reduced by more than 2,315 tons or equivalent to greenhouse gas reduction of 131,361 tons CO2.</p> <p> </p> <p>In addition, the company’s fast food business ‘Chester’ shop has also serviced customer in the shop with melamine plate, stainless steel spoon and glass (no plastic glass) since started operation for more than 30 years. It is the only one fast food to provide such service. It also created its own washing system with hygiene practices under food safety standards. This is to encourage consumer to realize more on environment save. 2419	Thai meat producer shifts to sustainable packaging	Charoen Pokphand Foods (CP Foods), a leading food producer in Thailand, announced sustainable packaging policy to reduce plastic footprint from its business worldwide.	<p>CP's goal is to replace all of its packaging with one that is reusable or recyclable or upcyclable or compostable and to eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging.</p> <p>The goals are expected to be accomplished by 2025 for Thailand operations and by 2030 for overseas operations.</p> <p>CP Foods will develop and manage packaging sustainably by considering throughout the value chain, achieving the company’s sustainable goal to cut waste disposal to landfill and incineration by 30% within 2020 when compared to 2015’s performance.</p> <p>The company announced also that in 2017 it reduced waste disposal to landfill and incineration per production unit by 9.08% compared to the baseline year of 2015.</p> <p>“CP Foods strives to be a responsible company with an environmental friendly value chain. Therefore, it has been working on the way to find alternative substitutes to single-use plastic materials, especially in the hotspot areas where plastic packages are frequently used such as feed mills, aquaculture farms and food processing plants,” Mr. Sooksunt Jiumjaiswanglerg, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) - Agro Industrial Business and Co-President of CP Foods, said.</p> <p>Since 2017, 60% of animal feed bags used in the company’s livestock feed business in Thailand has been replaced by bulk feed tank. It is able to reduce 8,000 tons of plastic, helping the company to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emission by 17,000 of carbon dioxide equivalent. It also extend this successful practice to operations in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines and Russia.</p> <p>The company were able to reduce 1,600 tons of plastic, 3,600 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, at aquaculture farms by using Q-pass tank as a replacement of plastic baby shrimp containers.</p> <p> New technologies are applied at chicken and food processing plants to minimize plastic waste in production and logistic process, allowing the company to drop over 3,500 tons of plastic since 2006.
