4529 | Singapore and Vietnam lift restrictions on German pork imports | Both countries have FTA's signed with the EU and their governments agreed to take into consideration the principle of regionalization. |
Germany managed to recover some of its pork export markets in Asia, after 6 months of negotiations on the principle of regionalization applied in the EU. A ban was placed in September 2020, after the country reported its first case of ASF in its wild boar population. However, Vietnam and Singapore decide this week to ease restrictions applied on German pork, as the virus hasn't been discovered on farms. Both countries have FTA's signed in the last couple of years with the EU. "Now there is hope in the meat industry that Vietnam can open the door to more markets in the region. The situation in the pig market is visibly improving," commented a German pig association, quoted by Bloomberg.
However, access to the Chinese market, the largest importer of German pork in 2020 and also to the Filipino market is still blocked. Talks are underway with China to resume pork imports from Germany and with Japan, a country that recently opened its market to Hungarian pork, although the East European country has been impacted far more seriously by ASF.
| 1 | Market | 2021-03-10 09:00:59 | 2025-08-06 04:03:21 | Details Edit Delete | ||

2605 | Singapore is ready to increase investments in aquaculture | Food security has become an important issue since the country imports 90% of its food. |
With food self-sufficiency at only 10%, Singapore starts to worry about its dependence on food imports and looks for solutions to improve food production in the country. During the 2019 Budget Hearing, Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat declared that the government intends to open a Centre of Innovation in Aquaculture in one of the country's universities in order to improve and promote "high-tech marine farming".
Despite the fact that the country is set on an island, only 9% of the fish consumed by the locals is produced in Singapore, according to Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA).
Also, indoor vertical farms are seen as a solution to raise the rate of food self-sufficiency in the country, reports The Independent.
Start-ups in food are going to be supported through a venture between the government investment fund and 7 partners that will invest $90 million in this sector. "To tap on the demand for high-quality food, and to build on our progress, Enterprise Singapore’s investment arm, SEEDS Capital, has appointed seven partners to co-invest in Singapore-based agri-food start-ups, to catalyse more than $90 million of investments", announced minister Heng.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-02-19 14:09:01 | 2025-08-05 16:06:41 | Details Edit Delete | ||

2844 | Singapore's grocery market to grow by 14.5% in the next 4 years | By 2023, Singapore will be the 23rd largest grocery market in Asia with a value estimated at $7.2 billion. |
Singapore's grocery market is forecast to see steady growth to SGD9.9bn ($7.2bn) by 2023, up 14.5% from 2018, according to the latest forecasts from international food and consumer goods researcher, IGD Asia. Although Singapore is a small market in value terms, it remains strategically important for many businesses and is often seen as a benchmark for the evolution of cities in Asia.
Traditional trade still makes up about a fifth of grocery sales in Singapore, according to IGD's findings, although this is likely to reduce over the next five years as the market continues to modernise.
"All channels are forecast to boost the value of modern trade, but growth will come mainly from the expansion of online, as retailers invest to meet growing shopper demand. Indeed, online will be the fastest-growing grocery channel in Singapore over the next five years, primarily driven by Alibaba Group through its RedMart store, as well as FairPrice investing more in the channel – on current projections, RedMart will establish itself as the clear online market leader by 2023. Supermarkets and convenience channels are set to grow in line with Singapore's overall market, between 2.5% to 3.5% per year, but hypermarkets will have a CAGR of just 1.1%, as retailers focus on expanding their smaller stores and online operations. Supermarkets will remain the main grocery format in Singapore, with a value of SGD5.7bn and accounting for 57.4% of sales by 2023. At more than half the total market value, protecting and growing sales in this channel should be a top priority for retailers and suppliers", explained Nick Miles, Head of Asia-Pacific at IGD.
Supermarkets will remain the main grocery format in Singapore, with a value of SGD5.7bn ($4.1bn) and accounting for 57.4% of sales by 2023, according to the report.
"Supermarkets and convenience channels are set to grow in line with Singapore's overall market, between 2.5% to 3.5% per year, but hypermarkets will have a CAGR of just 1.1%, as retailers focus on expanding their smaller stores and online operations", added Nick Miles.

| 1 | Retail | 2019-04-29 07:16:01 | 2025-08-06 00:10:03 | Details Edit Delete | ||

732 | Six Indonesian seafood exporters noticed by FDA | Several violations of HACCP regulations were reported in December 2017 and January 2018. |
Six seafood companies from Indonesia have come under the radar of the Food and Drug Administration for several violations of Seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point and also other US food safety rules. The companies were sent warning letters that are now public and are allowed 15 working days to respond to those.

Most of the problems were discovered during an inspection at Culver city importers' sites and "Frozen Tuna" seems to be one of the products that are not compliant with the American regulations on food safety, reports Food Safety News.
Tritos Sejahtera, Shimasse Prata Citra, Sukses Sejati, Sekar Subur Abadi, Anugerah Lestari Abadi and Nusantara Jaya Abadi are the six companies warned by the FDA for non-compliance with the law.

According to the inspectors, in some cases "firms failed to conduct a hazard analysis to determine whether there are food safety hazards that are reasonably likely to occur and have a HACCP plan that, at a minimum, lists the critical control points; the critical limits are not adequate to control scombrotoxin (histamine) formation that is reasonably likely to occur during transit from the supplier to the processing plant; and corrective action plan does not ensure that no adulterated product with Clostridium botulinum toxin enters commerce".

All of the products were discovered in the storage facilities of Gourmet Fusion Foods, one of the major importers of Indonesian seafood. In one case, inspectors recommended that “in addition to segregating and destroying any label stock that does not contain the proper statement and determining and correcting the cause of improper labels, firms also segregate and relabel any improperly labelled product”. Additional enforcement actions are to be taken if the firm does not promptly correct these violations.

(Photo source: Pixabay)
| 1 | Retail | 2018-02-06 07:00:00 | 2025-08-05 20:32:40 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5090 | Slaughter figures rose in Hungary | A reduction of sow herd announces a drop in national swine inventory for 2022. |
According to a new report by the Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI), slaughterhouse processing has increased in every livestock sector in Hungary in the first half of 2021. While overall, the number of pigs decreased this year, the number of sows sent to slaughterhouses increased and so did the figures for poultry, following the lifting of pandemic measures.
In the first six months of 2021, the number of cattle slaughtered increased by 1%, and the numbers of pigs and poultry increased by 5.9% and 8.9%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2020.
39% of the sow herd was sent to slaughterhouses this year, which means that Hungary will see a drop in swine population next year. A possible major factor behind this change and the decline in the stock was rising market difficulties. According to the latest data by the Central Statistical Office (KSH), the purchase price of live animals increased to €1.17 per kilogram by March, however, the price stagnated throughout the second quarter and by the third quarter, it actually sank under €1.11/kg. Meanwhile, the trends on the feed market have been turning the screw on pig farmers – In the first two quarters alone, feed prices increased by 22%. The Ministry of Agriculture stepped in with a €3.34 million funding for compensation for domestic pig farmers and a national popularization campaign for pork consumption.
The volume of slaughtered sheep and cattle increased by 47% and 1%, respectively, in January-August 2021. In the case of the trade of live cattle, the volume of the export increased by 62%, while imports rose by 12%.
The number of slaughtered poultry also increased this year, and 79% of the animals were chickens. However, according to the latest data by KSH, the annual increase trend in the purchase price of slaughter poultry weakened from 9.7% in May to 9.2% at the end of the period. As the rate of the purchase price increase decelerated, poultry farmers were less able to pass on the input cost increase caused by rising feed prices.
In the case of water fowls (which is an export-oriented sector), the disruptions that were caused by the collapse of the HORECA industries in 2020 now seem to be clearing up. The total figures for slaughtered ducks and geese increased by 43% and 18% in Q1-Q2 2021 respectively, while the number of slaughtered turkeys dropped by 13.8%, informed agroberichtenbuitenland.nl.
| 1 | Industry | 2021-11-17 10:42:38 | 2025-08-06 05:54:30 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3733 | Slaughter pig figures in China drops. Prices hold steady | Major companies have reduced their hog sales by an average of 40% during the covid-19 crisis. |
The Chinese pig market has sunk during Jan-Feb 2020, due to the lockdown of major cities in the country and also the lack of personnel in processing plants. Many producers have reported lower figures of pork sales, included public listed companies such as Wens, Muyuan, Zhenbang, Tiabang, DBN, Tiakang and Tangren Shen reported volumes of pig sale decreasing from 31% to ^5%, compared to the same period last year.
There were several examples of companies with larger hog sales over the first two months of the year, New Hope (+18%) and Aonong (+12%). Major produces in the area, such as WH Group, have adjusted their activities in their farms and plants due to a massive lack of personnel. Only recently, activities have resumed at 95% in its units, said chairman Wan Long, quoted by Reuters.
Nevertheless, the impact on hog prices in China has been almost invisible due to a significant decline in demand. Between Jan 22 and March 4, the pig meat price per kilo rose from 36.615 to 36.66 yuans.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-03-25 09:04:16 | 2025-08-06 05:43:10 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2381 | Slaughterhouses in China will be forced to run ASF tests | New rules are set by Chinese authorities in order to halt the spread of the disease. |
There are more than 100 cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) reported in China in the last six months and authorities are setting new rules for the slaughterhouses in a bid to halt the spread of the disease.
Starting February 1, Chinese slaughterhouses will need to run a test for ASF virus on pig products before selling them, reports Agriculture.com website quoting official sources. Also, pigs from different origins must be slaughter separately.
They can only sell the products if the blood of the same batch of pigs is tested negative for African swine fever virus. 5163 | Slight decline in Denmark's pig herd | The trend is to accelerate next year, considering the sharp decline reported in maiden gilts. |
According to provisional figures published by Statistics Denmark, the number of pigs recorded on 1 October totaled 13.21 million head. This was 1% lower compared with the same time last year but similar to the previous quarter. "Bear in mind that the number of pigs recorded at this time in 2020 was likely boosted somewhat by processing delays due to COVID-19 challenges. Related to this, the number of pigs being fed for slaughter in Denmark declined by 2% year-on-year, accounting for most of the fall in the overall pig population," considers Bethan Wilkins, AHDB analyst.
Numbers in the breeding herd have dropped by 2% but the highest contraction was seen in maiden gilts (-7%), which reveals further decline of the herd in the following months. "Piglet numbers were also lower, decreasing by 1% to 2.69 million head. This suggests productivity has not increased and compensated for falling sow numbers, as can often be the case.
The EU pig industry overall faces a challenging profitability situation at the moment, which might be expected to lead to further contraction in the Danish pig herd. However, the small degree of change seen so far may not have much overall impact on pig availability, particularly if productivity improvements are seen," Mrs Wilkins added.
| 1 | Industry | 2021-12-22 05:13:23 | 2025-08-06 08:54:45 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1139 | Slight decline of consumer sentiment in Europe | The Southern flank is flooded with pessimism while Central and Northern Europe are positive about a future rise of incomes, reports GfK. |
A study released by GfK shows mixed emotions in Europe regarding the consumer sentiment. In the first quarter of 2018, consumer sentiment in Europe remained at a relatively stable level. In March, however, the GfK Consumer Climate for the 28 EU states showed a slight decline, reaching a level of 20.6 points. In December 2017, it stood at 21.1 points.

The decline was fueled by the pessimism of consumers from the Southern flank in countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Greece, where there are no big expectations for a rise in incomes for the next months. The same feeling is present in Austria and Romania, mentioned the study.

Meanwhile, consumers in the Czech Republic, Poland and Belgium have a far more positive view of the economic development of their countries. The same feeling is present in Great Britain and Bulgaria and the optimism pushed up the income expectations index by 1.3 to a level of 16.3 in March.

Germany and the Netherlands are showing a steady level, similar to the last quarter of 2017. For 2018, GfK predicts an increase in private household consumer spending in the European Union from 1.5 to 2 percent in real terms.

| 1 | Retail | 2018-04-20 10:40:44 | 2025-08-05 20:16:47 | Details Edit Delete |
