2574 Jose Graziano da Silva urges food industry and governments to secure access to safe food by sustained investment and coordinated, multi-sectoral approaches.
The First International Food Safety Conference, in Addis Ababa, organized by the African Union (AU), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) has emphasized the need for greater international cooperation is needed to prevent unsafe food from causing ill health and hampering progress towards sustainable development.
Food contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites, toxins or chemicals causes more than 600 million people to fall ill and 420 000 to die worldwide every year. Illness linked to unsafe food overloads healthcare systems and damages economies, trade and tourism. The impact of unsafe food costs low- and middle-income economies around $95 billion in lost productivity each year, world leaders said.
"There is no food security without food safety. This conference is a great opportunity for the international community to strengthen political commitments and engage in key actions. Safeguarding our food is a shared responsibility. We must all play our part. We must work together to scale up food safety in national and international political agendas", said FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva.
Technological advances, digitalization, novel foods and processing methods provide a wealth of opportunities to simultaneously enhance food safety and improve nutrition, livelihoods and trade. At the same time, climate change and the globalization of food production, coupled with a growing global population and increasing urbanization, pose new challenges to food safety. Food systems are becoming even more complex and interlinked, blurring lines of regulatory responsibility. Solutions to these potential problems require intersectoral and concerted international action.
The aim of the conference is to identify key actions that will ensure the availability of, and access to, safe food now and in the future. This will require a strengthened commitment at the highest political level to scale up food safety in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
A central theme of the conference is that food safety systems need to keep pace with the way food is produced and consumed. This requires sustained investment and coordinated, multi-sectoral approaches for regulatory legislation, suitable laboratory capacities, and adequate disease surveillance and food monitoring programmes, all of which need to be supported by information technologies, shared information, training and education.
Around 130 countries are participating in the two-day conference, including ministers of agriculture, health, and trade. Leading scientific experts, partner agencies and representatives of consumers, food producers, civil society organizations and the private sector are also taking part.
    Industry 2019-02-13 09:35:57 2025-08-11 15:42:31 Details Edit Delete
2573 US beef exports remain on record pace, says USMEF Beef exports totaled 112,842 metric tons (mt) in November, up 1 percent from a year ago, while value climbed 6 percent to $709.2 million, according to statistics released by USDA and compiled by USMEF.
For January through November, exports reached 1.24 million mt, up 8 percent year-over-year and 6 percent above the record pace of 2011. At $7.63 billion, beef export value was up 16 percent and has already broken the full-year record set in 2017 ($7.27 billion).

Beef export value per head of fed slaughter is also on a record pace, averaging $322.97 in November (up 5 percent from a year ago) and $320.72 during the first 11 months of 2018 (up 14 percent).

Exports accounted for 13.1 percent of total November beef production and 10.9 percent for muscle cuts, both steady with November 2017. For January through November, exports equated to 13.4 percent of total production and 11.1 percent for muscle cuts – up from 12.8 percent and 10.3 percent, respectively, in 2017.

These numbers highlight the strong international demand for U.S. beef as exports are accounting for a larger share of growing U.S. production and are fetching higher prices, with some U.S. cuts trading at record prices in Asia.
    Industry 2019-02-13 06:46:16 2025-08-11 12:28:12 Details Edit Delete
2578 EU pork production up 2% in November EU pork production rose 2% year-on-year in November to total just under 2.1 million tonnes, according to the Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), based on the latest figures published by Eurostat.
Tom Forshaw, AHDB analyst, said that the increase in production was driven by an increase in slaughterings, which were also up 2% year-on-year to total 22.7 million head. Average carcase weights for across the bloc were therefore relatively unchanged at 92.4kg. Increased production towards the end of 2018 kept prices low, although there’s been no further downward pressure on the EU reference price since November. So, it seems supply and demand have been fairly balanced.

Higher production for much of the year means that pig meat production in the year to date now totals 21.9 million tonnes, up 3% compared to 2017. Meanwhile slaughterings are up 2% to total 239 million head, with a slight increase in carcase weights (+0.36kg) over the year as a whole also contributing to increased production.
    Industry 2019-02-14 05:52:37 2025-08-11 20:11:24 Details Edit Delete
2571 Meat exports from Belarus have reached $1 billion In 2018, meat exports have increased by 8.2% being shipped to 19 countries around the globe.
Last year, the export of the Belarusian agricultural produce and food products increased by 5.3% year-on-year to make up $5.235bn, with meat accounting for $ 1 billion (+8.2%), totalling 370,000 tonnes.
China is one of the most important trading partners at this time, according to Aleksei Bogdanov, head of the Central Office for Foreign Economic Activities of the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry. In just one year, Belarusian food exports to China have grown by 340% after two meat producers, five poultry plants and 51 dairy companies have been authorized to supply the Chinese market. "We've managed to get our companies certified within the shortest possible period of time. Belarus is one of the top ten countries, which can sell meat to China. China is busy diversifying its import in order to ensure the country's food security", explained Bogdanov.
According to the official, Belarus is targeting an 8.6% increase in food exports this year to reach a total of $5.7 billion. "We are actively exploring other markets. The CIS countries will be our number one market because of logistics and similar preferences. Then go the markets of Australia and Oceania where we intend to build our presence. Another important market for us is the Persian Gulf countries, which are rich in oil but are not food sufficient. Next come the countries of Africa, the EU, and America. We intend to both step up the volumes and increase the processing level in order to sell more finished goods with maximum added value. We will work to promote the 'Made in Belarus' brand not only in Russia, in the EEU and the CIS but also in distant countries. If the market trends are advantageous and if the weather is good for crops, we will increase food exports up to $5.7bn in 2019, which will be up by 8.6% over 2018. This plan is ambitious but not impossible,", added Bogdanov, according to BELTA news agency.
    Industry 2019-02-12 12:54:35 2025-08-11 16:22:43 Details Edit Delete

2565 USMEF tries to increase sales in the Ukrainian pork market The goal was to introduce US pork cuts that can be utilized in cuisines that are growing in popularity among Ukrainian consumers
Two classes of cutting and cooking training for chefs and foodservice managers were held by USMEF representatives in Dnipro and Kiev, Ukraine, as a way to promote the use of various US pork cuts and the placement of US pork dishes on menus.
US pork loin, cushion meat, picnic and spare ribs were the subject of training at Kitchen Lab, the largest distributor of kitchen equipment in Kiev. The training, specifically intended for Kiev’s HRI operators, attracted more than 40 participants.
"The strategy was to invite chefs and restaurateurs who are receptive to and in the best position to include US pork on their menus in the future. Right now, there is a dining trend in Ukraine toward offering American barbecue and Asian cuisine, so we demonstrated how US pork fits well with dishes in those categories” explained Galina Kochubeeva, USMEF representative in the region.
The Kiev training followed classes for HRI operators in Dnipro, which were focused on the attributes of US pork and the advantages it offers over pork from the EU. "US red meat has been relatively new for the HRI market players in Dnipro, but the popularity has been growing since USMEF’s first seminar there in December 2016. the classes attracted 35 HRI chefs, sous chefs, technologists and meat buyers. The sector is eager to learn more about US pork and they are wanting to use more US pork", believes Kochubeeva.
According to a USDA projection for this year, the pork production in the US will increase by 4% putting the export volumes to 2.8 million tonnes, which is supposed to be a record. At the same time, disruptions created in the trade wars initiated with China and Mexico have created headwinds for US pork in the second half of 2018. "In the first half of the year, pork exports were also on a very positive trajectory but unfortunately U.S. pork has been heavily targeted for retaliation. We remain hopeful that these disputes can be resolved soon so that U.S. pork can get back on a level playing field with its competitors.", explained USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom.
    Industry 2019-02-12 04:29:01 2025-08-12 00:39:45 Details Edit Delete

2559 Kazakhstan wants to revive its pork industry By 2025, the Kazakh Union of Pig Farmers hopes to establish pork export of around 100,000 tonnes per year.
The Kazakh Union of Pig Farmers intends to revive the pork production in the country and hopes to open the Russian and Chinese market for their exports. A recent development programme adopted by the Union plans to establish pork export of around 100,000 tonnes per year by 2025. "With the improved effectiveness and decreased production costs, an export price of around US$ 3.5 per kg would be a great deal for the Kazakhstan pig farmers", said Viktor Lim, chairman of the Kazakhstan Union of Pig Farmers.
That requires increasing the domestic pig population by 1.2 million head, according to Forbes Kazakhstan. Currently, the picture of pig production is not too rosy. The country’s pig population has gradually been shrinking over the past 2 decades. Although no African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks have been reported, the country’s number of pigs decreased from over 3 million in the early 1990s to just over 800,000 in 2017.

In 2017, Kazakhstan’s pig industry amounted to 94,000 tonnes. 2557 The US maintained its role as the largest importer of Vietnamese whiteleg shrimp The product plays a key role in the export structure of shrimp to the US, accounting for over 80% of the total exported shrimp products to the US.
For many years, the United States has maintained the number 1 position of importing whiteleg shrimp of Vietnam and even if the imports have decreased during the first 7 months of 2018, starting from August had witnessed a positive recovery, according to a VASEP analysis.
The US is the second largest shrimp import market of Vietnam after the EU, accounting for 18.2% of Vietnam's total shrimp exports to markets. Shrimp export average turnover to the US reached about 700 million US$ per year, in 2014, shrimp export to the US increased dramatically to over 1 billion US$.

In 2017, Vietnam whiteleg shrimp export to the US reached 536.3 million US$, accounting for over 81% of total shrimp export products to the US. In the first ten months of this year, Vietnam whiteleg shrimp exports to this market still maintained the proportion of 81% of the total shrimp product structure to the US, with 540.4 million US$.

From 2012 onwards, tiger shrimp dominated the structure of exported shrimp products to the US. The proportion of export value was continuously 1.3 to 1.6 higher than that of whiteleg shrimp.

In 2013, whiteleg shrimp for the first time surpassed tiger shrimp in export value to the US thanks to the increase in domestic whiteleg shrimp production.

The economic recession at this time had changed the trend and consumer habits of the American people. In 2013, the shrimp market report showed that consumers in this country had switched to using whiteleg shrimp instead of black tiger shrimp, and this trend continued to maintain in 2013.

In 2013, the US became the number one consumer market for Vietnam whiteleg shrimp exports. The supply of whiteleg shrimp from Thailand fell sharply due to the influence of EMS, Vietnam and India have become an alternative supply thanks to the strong increase in the production of whiteleg shrimp of both countries.

From 2013 to 2017, the proportion of white leg shrimp exported to the US was always higher than that of tiger shrimp. During this period, the export value of whiteleg shrimp is nearly 3 times higher than that of tiger shrimp. In 10 years (2008-2017), whiteleg shrimp exports reached a record high in 2014 with 775.7 million USD; accounting for nearly 73% of total shrimp export value of Vietnam to the US.

While whiteleg shrimp exports had fallen in 2017, this year August, September and October had witnessed positive recovery. In the context of a positive anti-dumping tax POR 12 that made competitors such as Thailand reduce exports to the US, along with the US-China trade war, Vietnam whiteleg shrimp exports remained to have many opportunities in the US market.

According to a report from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the first 9 months of 2018, the total imports of shrimp to the US reached nearly 492000 MT, worth 4.4 billion USD, up by 4% in volume but down by 4% in value compared to the same period last year. Starting from August this year, importing shrimp into the US has shown signs of recovery after the continuous fall in the 4 consecutive previous months.

The US has an increasing trend of importing warm water shrimp including whiteleg shrimp from Asian countries, reducing cold water shrimp imports from Mexico and Canada. For frozen whiteleg shrimp products, the US mainly imports from India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and Ecuador. For processed whiteleg shrimp products, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Indonesia are the main suppliers for the US respectively.

Of the total US shrimp imports, whiteleg shrimp accounted for 69% of total imports, marine shrimp accounted for 7% and tiger shrimp 4%. Meanwhile, the level of whiteleg shrimp farming in Vietnam is quite high with the annual output reaching up to 350000 MT, so the room for exporting white shrimp of Vietnam to the US is still relatively large.
    Industry 2019-02-09 06:55:35 2025-08-11 14:16:36 Details Edit Delete
2555 No-deal Brexit could collapse Irish beef exports to the UK by 88%
A hard Brexit could be disastrous for the Irish meat industry, with the beef sector taking the hardest hit, according to a report from FTI Consulting. Under "no-deal" scenario, beef and other meats exports would fall by 88% and 76% respectively, says RTE website, quoting the report.
Duties applied for the Irish beef could raise the price of the product by 54% causing losses of €732 million and putting thousands of jobs in danger. The UK imported just over an average of 360,000 tonnes of beef and beef products between 2013 and 2017. In recent years, imports have remained relatively stable. On average, the value of imports is just under £1.3 billion per year. Imports from the EU accounted for an average of around 86% of the total (2013–2017). Ireland is the dominant supplier, with an average of 63% market share, according to an analysis included in the AHDB Horizon Brexit Trade report issued this month.
A proportion of these imports is beef that is produced in the country but exported for further processing due to the limited processing capacity in the UK. Fresh and chilled meat made up the majority of imports (an average of 53%) between 2013 and 2017, which mostly comprised boneless cuts that achieve higher prices as there is little or no further processing required and transports costs are lower. Fresh carcases accounted for around 10% of imported volumes.
The UK is a net importer of beef and around 75% self-sufficient in beef production.
In its report on no-deal contingency planning on 13 November, the European Commission said Ireland was the most affected member state, and that the EU would provide financial and other support, especially in the agri-food sector.
    Industry 2019-02-08 12:48:44 2025-08-10 19:07:43 Details Edit Delete
2553 Exports outside the EU are gaining in importance - COV Dutch Meat Association (COV) is focusing on promoting its top products in the world's largest importing markets.
Dutch Meat Association (COV) is taking pride in opening 8 of the 10 largest global beef importing countries. "No other EU country can say that", explained Frans van Dongen, Director of International Affairs at the COV, in the annual report for 2018.
"In our vision for the future, the COV has expressed various ambitions, in the economic field, about quality, safety, well-being and sustainability; but all these aspects stand or fall with the export in general and the square value in particular. Exports, especially those outside the EU, are rapidly gaining in importance. In 2018 this was already more than 1 billion euros: that is now half of the total export. It is precisely these exports to the so-called 'third countries' that contribute to the square value and therefore a good return for the entire chain. Every export market has specific requirements and sets different emphases. Our companies must, in any case, comply with all requirements to be able to export to those countries. For example, the Dutch Meat sector operates at a level that can be described as 'the best of all worlds'", he said.
In the last year, COV has managed to open the Mexican market for pork, which is the third largest import market in the world. Promotional campaigns such as Trusted Pork and Trusted Veal made the Dutch products visible on a number of important export markets. "The export of pork to some important markets has grown in 2018. This is the case for China, Japan, South Korea and Australia. For veal, exports to the US and Japan have grown. In the coming years, we want to broaden market access for the pig sector to more cuts. For beef and veal, we work on China, South Korea, the USA and Australia", added Van Dongen.
    Industry 2019-02-08 12:34:42 2025-08-09 07:24:13 Details Edit Delete
