3548 Tyson calls for sustainable protein coalition The company works to set up the Coalition for Global Protein, a body comprising leaders from the global protein industry, which includes all forms of protein, alongside academia, non-governmental organizations and financial institutions.
Tyson Foods presented its plan to create a Coalition for Global Protein with a clear objective to increase understanding around the challenges of feeding a growing population with more varied and sustainable protein options; identify new and creative solutions, and activate those solutions through pilot programs.
"We’re focused on uniting the world’s most influential, food-focused stakeholders around a shared purpose to build a future of protein that is sustainable and equitable across global communities – at every link in the supply chain. Igniting transformative change in our food system requires industry-wide collaboration and a willingness to go beyond our businesses through strong commitments and actions," explained John Tyson, Chief Sustainability Officer of Tyson Foods.
The launch of the Coalition for Global Protein comes as livestock production around the world comes under increasing criticism for its contribution to climate change. In the last couple of years, Tyson Foods has made an entry in the alternative protein market, first investing in Beyond Meat, then launching its own plant-based products.
According to a report from US global management consulting firm AT Kearney, by 2040, the majority of the meat consumed by humans (60%) will be derived from cultured meat or plant-based alternatives that look and taste like meat.
    Industry 2020-01-23 11:26:08 2025-07-04 02:21:31 Details Edit Delete
3549 EU suspends poultry imports from Ukraine Avian influenza reported by the ex-Soviet country stands behind the decision.
Imports of poultry meat, meat products and non-heat-treated poultry products from Ukraine have been suspended by the EU authorities. However, eggs and egg products are not subject to these restrictions, announced the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection.
Officials from the agency are considering the measure to be "extremely unexpected", taking into consideration the reports of numerous equivalence assessment missions, the results of negotiations and preliminary agreements. "Ukrainian measures for the control and eradication of bird flu have been recognized as equivalent to those implemented by EU member states", the agency said in a press release. Ukraine is one of the major exporters of poultry in the EU market.
This is the first outbreak of avian flu registered in Ukraine in nearly three years. On the other hand, several cases of bird flu have been reported in commercial and backyard farms in 5 EU member states (Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic) and the virus has also been found in wild birds in Germany.
Coordination Rurale, a French farm union, warned about the risk of a general epidemic in the EU and recalls the 2017 events when millions of birds were culled in Europe due to multiple outbreaks on the continent. The union also warned authorities to urgently stop shipments from the infected countries and alert customs agents to the risk.
    Industry 2020-01-24 07:31:48 2025-07-02 11:21:37 Details Edit Delete
3550 Ghana looks to end poultry imports in 5 years The West African nation is hoping to achieve this target through a program named "Broiler Revitalization Project".
Over the next 5 years, Ghana wants to end poultry imports and to develop a strong local industry, informs Ghanaweb agency. The Ministry of Food and Agriculture intends to produce a total of 20 million day-old chicks in a program called "Broiler Revitalization Project". After that, the chicks to be produced would be distributed to selected poultry farmers nationwide.
The program will have 5 phases, with each phase covering a period of one year expected to record the production of 4 million chicks. Ghana's current production potential is estimated at 4.4 million birds but in the 3 years, the local producers were suffocated by frozen poultry imports from the EU member states.
Officials from the Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association (GAPFA) say that poultry farmers across the country would take advantage of the project to expand their operations. At the same time, the president of GAPFA, Michael Ampem believes that the market should remain open to poultry imports to motivate the industry to develop and modernize. "Poultry importers should be made to buy at least 50% of poultry products produced in Ghana and import the rest of the 50%", he said.
    Industry 2020-01-24 09:51:39 2025-07-04 02:51:41 Details Edit Delete
3551 Israel reaches record level in livestock imports In 2019, the country imported nearly 700,000 lambs and calves from Europe and Australia.
A recent report issued by the Israeli animal rights group Animals states that 691,327 live lambs and calves have arrived last year in the country for fattening and slaughter. In the last decade, the trend in increasing livestock imports was constantly present in the Israeli market. By comparison, 95,545 live animals were imported for the meat industry in 2009 and 228,711 in 2014, according to the report. 2017 marked a slight dip in the numbers of the animals shipped to Israel but it was quickly overcome next year with 685,813 head imported.
The Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, green-lighted a bill in its preliminary reading to stop the live transports from Australia and Europe since late 2018, but the lack of a functioning government in the country led to a continuous postpone of the bill. A third national ballot has been set for March and that could put a stop in livestock imports in the country and a gradual move to the import of chilled meat over the next three years, according to the Times of Israel newspaper.
    Industry 2020-01-24 12:36:25 2025-07-04 05:04:10 Details Edit Delete
3552 Thailand takes the role of main supplier of live pigs in SE Asia Demand for live pigs is increasing in Vietnam and Cambodia as commercial farms are trying to rebuild their herds.
Thailand has become one of the main suppliers of live pigs in Southeast Asia and reported a peak of $2.6/kg in live pig prices in January 2020. Growing demand for live pigs in Cambodia and Vietnam is motivating Thai pig farmers to boost their exports across the border. Over the Chinese New Year period, live pig prices in Vietnam hovered to $3.50/kg and $2.80/kg in Cambodia, according to the latest Genesus Global Market report.
However, the Thai government takes action to limit the live pig exports aiming to curb down the prices. "The Thai Swine Raisers Association estimated that the pig population in Thailand was at about 950,000 heads in 2019, 15% lower than the previous year. The farmers reduced the number of breeding stock throughout last year due to concerns over African Swine Fever, which is hitting neighboring Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. Thailand is expected to produce 22 million market pigs this year.
The association said pig supplies in Thailand would continue to be tight over the next few months as the summer is coming. Rising temperature leads to the slow growth of pigs and a shortage of water will raise the production cost further," reported Paul Anderson, General Manager South East Asia and International Sales Manager for Genesus Inc.
That would create a larger gap in Vietnam's pork supply as the country managed to keep the prices under control by importing pigs from Thailand. "Pork shortage has been gripping the country following months of excess pork supply due to panic slaughtering of the herd, which has the effect of depressing prices. It is believed that the existing pork supply shortage is likely to persist over 2020. This would also put upside pressure on the prices of other animal protein. Pork production is likely to only recover somewhat closer to 2023.

Food inflation almost doubled to 9.2% in December 2019, from 5.6% in November 2019, on the back of rocketing pork prices due to the outbreak of African Swine Fever, which has affected all 63 provinces. High inflation also weighs on Vietnam’s export competitiveness,", added Mr. Anderson.
    Industry 2020-01-27 06:29:36 2025-07-04 07:14:06 Details Edit Delete
3553 The investment will significantly improve raw material yield, productivity and operational reliability at Rauma poultry unit and ensure the capacity required for strongly growing demand.
HKScan will invest some €6 million in the new slaughter process of its poultry unit in Rauma. The investment will significantly improve raw material yield, productivity and operational reliability and ensure the capacity required for strongly growing demand. The investment will be implemented in stages at the end of 2020, according to a company press release.

"We will renew the whole first part of the poultry unit’s production process in Rauma since the slaughter line introduced in 2017 does not meet the standards required by the Group’s current management. With the investment, the processing capacity of the slaughter line will increase by some 20% and raw material yield by some 10%. The investment will also ensure a significant reduction in the consumption of utilities, such as water and district heating. Demand for poultry products continues to increase and the investment enables us to better meet this strong demand in the coming years," said HKScan’s CEO Tero Hemmila

With the investment, the current slaughter line will be dismantled. For this reason, HKScan will record a €6.9 million write-down of the residual value of the current line balance sheet. The write-down has no impact on cash flow.

The new slaughter line will be installed in stages at the end of 2020. The investment will improve the operational reliability and productivity of the Rauma unit and significantly increase production capacity from the current levels. Demand and sales of HKScan’s poultry products in Finland have grown faster and stronger than expected. This investment will enable business growth more assuredly in the years to come. Demand and sales of Kariniemen poultry products, in particular, are expected to grow faster than the market.

HKScan’s strong profit improvement in its poultry business in Finland has been one of the key drivers of the Group’s profit improvement in 2019. In the second half of 2019, HKScan returned to its market leader position in the poultry category in Finland due to a significantly improved service level.
    Industry 2020-01-27 07:32:35 2025-07-02 23:05:29 Details Edit Delete
3554 Beef consumption in Argentina fell by 5 kg This is the lowest level for the past 10 years, according to data measured by the Chamber of Meat Industry and Commerce of Argentina.
While Argentinian beef exports have boomed in 2019, the situation in the domestic market is completely different. Last year, beef consumption in Argentina has dropped by almost 5 kg, sinking to the lowest level registered in the past 10 years, according to data presented by the Chamber of Meat Industry and Commerce of Argentina.
Pork, chicken and even roasted vegetables have replaced beef on the usual weekly grill celebrated by the Argentinians. Besides that, the loss of purchasing power due to the economy in recession has reduced demand for beef in the domestic market but has been a support for exports in the last two years, especially to China.
Between January-November 2019, Argentinian beef exports have reached 501,509 tonnes, increasing by 51% from 331,708 tonnes reported in 2018. More than 350,000 tonnes of beef were shipped to China, as the Asian country has increased its beef imports due to an animal protein shortage in the market.
    Industry 2020-01-27 09:10:39 2025-07-03 17:48:07 Details Edit Delete
3555 China's pork production to drop further - Rabobank Pork imports are estimated to reach 4 million tonnes this year, a volume equal in size with Brazil's production.
The latest Rabobank quarterly report on pork predicts that China is to increase pork imports by 1 million tonnes this year, reaching 4 million tonnes, a volume that equals the Brazilian pig meat production. Since the beginning of the African swine fever in China (August 2018), the national swine inventory has decreased by almost 50% and signs in herd rebuilding are seen only in large companies with better biosecurity and modern farming facilities, observes Chenjun Pan, Senior Analyst - Animal protein, Rabobank.
"ASF continues to spread in China, though the pace has slowed. Policies encourage restocking and production expansion, which is currently conducted by large companies with better biosecurity and modern farming facilities. As restocking is mainly achieved by keeping gilts, we expect to see a further drop in local production in 2020, which will reduce overall pork production. This suggests imports will increase in 2020, above record levels," commented the analyst.
Brazil and the US are expected to increase their shipments of pork to China, while the EU's role of main supplier of pig meat in the Chinese market depends on several factors that can impact the pork production. Among those, the Brexit trade-deal negotiation and local ASF risks are the ones that can drag pork production bellow the level of 1% increase predicted for this year.
    Market 2020-01-27 10:53:18 2025-07-03 10:41:53 Details Edit Delete
3556 JBS to supply meat worth $717 million to China The Brazilian meat producer signed a distribution agreement with the Chinese giant WH Group.
Two of the world's largest meat producers signed an agreement to distribute poultry, beef and pork in the Chinese market. Brazilian JBS and China's WH Group agreed on a deal worth $717 million per year, according to Reuters. The first shipments under the agreement are expected to take place in the first quarter of 2020, announced JBS. In a statement issued Monday, the two companies said they will offer a portfolio of Friboi and Seara branded products in a deal that could reach $717 million annually. The agreement will allow JBS to have direct access to Chinese consumers through WH Group's 60,000 points of sales across the country. WH Group is the parent of Smithfield Foods Inc and the largest pork producer in China.
"This agreement reflects the maturity and evolution of our trade relations with China. It will be an opportunity for us to evolve in our supply chain in an unprecedented business model for JBS," declared Renato Costa, president of Friboi. He also said that JBS has seen changes in the Chinese consumers' profile regarding protein consumption and a growing concern for food quality, product traceability and enhanced food safety. To meet the demand from Chinese consumers, the Brazilian meat giant has developed on the ground teams in a series of partnerships and projects in China.
    Market 2020-01-29 06:08:02 2025-07-03 20:14:53 Details Edit Delete
3557 Pork prices in the Philippines are dropping Consumer's false concerns about the ASF situation and the quality of the meat has led to a decline in pork consumption.
Pork prices in the Philippines are dropping due to false concerns of the consumers on the ASF outbreaks that hit the country since mid-August 2019. "It is estimated that demand for pork at wet markets went down by 50%, while demand at the supermarkets went down by 20%. Compared to pre-ASF the net live weight price dropped by up to 25% causing most of the industry to be below the cost of production estimated," explains Paul Anderson, Genesus' General Manager South East Asia and International Sales Manager. By now, losses recorded by the pork industry in the Philippines are estimated at $80 million.

The backyard pig population is believed to be 8.2 million, a decrease of 1.7% compared to the previous year. The reduction in backyard farms and the restocking of the herds culled for ASF should in the medium to long term have a positive effect on the overall health in the swine industry. Two of the regions with a high density in swine population, Central Luzon and Calabarzon, have been hit by ASF and the swine population in the area has declined by almost 40%. Most of the backyard farms in this area have already closed their operations.

For this year, the demand for pork in the Filipino market is expected to resume by the end of the first quarter. "Some of the larger productions have started to increase their breeding stock numbers and this is expected to continue to take up the slack of the backyard farms and in anticipation of the potential record-high hog prices to follow. We expect the demand for pork to resume in the spring of 2020 and the hog prices to raise from then in line with supply and demand," added Mr. Anderson.
    Industry 2020-01-29 06:43:49 2025-07-04 02:11:27 Details Edit Delete

3559 Dark-chicken meat to support poultry sales in Asia However, the market remains volatile and the oversupply in whole-bird and breast-meat markets will remain pressured and have limited price upside.
Poultry exports to Asian countries affected by the ASF virus will support a gradual recovery for the global poultry industry but it will have a certain downside as the main products imported in China, Vietnam, South Korea and the Philippines are chicken legs, wings or other parts identified as "dark-chicken meat".
These trade flows will be positive for dark-meat prices, though they will be subject to increased volatility. Improved beef prices (the main substitute for fresh poultry), stable global average feed prices, and more balanced supply will also all support the gradual recovery. The downside is that global whole-bird and breast-meat markets will remain pressured and have limited price upside, reports Rabobank.
"African swine fever (ASF) will increasingly push chicken expansion in Asia in 2020. This will help fill the gap in local protein markets affected by ASF, but it also raises concerns about future oversupply. Strong growth in local supply – from poultry companies and pig farmers who invest in poultry farming – and rising imports are boosting supply. This will likely result in local price volatility in 2020," explained Nan-Dirk Mulder, Senior Global Specialist – Animal Protein.
Dark-chicken meat prices are expected to stay at average to high levels, but with more volatility. Supply growth in ASF-affected markets, rising availability of dark meat after Russia’s and Ukraine’s entry to global markets, and the reopening of US chicken exports to China will all add to volatility in global trade flows.

The top-performing markets in 2020 will be China, which is expected to see short supply in the next four to five years, and Mexico, where supply will also remain short, after outbreaks of avian influenza (AI) in early 2019. The US – and, to a lesser extent, the EU and Russia – will see improvement if supply stays balanced. Several wildcards could impact markets in 2020, including Brexit, the ongoing risk of AI, feed-price volatility (the base-case scenario indicates limited growth), and potential trade disruptions. In trade, we see more openings in Asia (partly because of AI), but also rising restrictions in Africa and the Middle East.
Last year, China has reported an increase of 12% in poultry production and the trend is expected to remain as many of the small pig farmers have turned to poultry to avoid losses in case of new ASF outbreaks.
    Industry 2020-01-29 10:16:56 2025-07-04 07:11:30 Details Edit Delete
3560 Spanish pig prices jump to five-year record
Spanish pig breeders have witnessed a perfect year for their businesses, closing 2019 with an average price of €1,35/kg live-weight. It was the highest level recorded in the past 5 years and it went higher than the average market price in Germany (€1.34/kg live-weight).
A short synopsis of the Spanish swine sector for last year shows us that 2020 could be even more productive for the Iberian pork industry, according to Mercedes Vega, Genesus' General Director for Spain, Italy and Portugal. "Sow inventory has increased compared to 2018 by 1.6%. As of June 2019, there were 2,537,870 sows in Spain. Total pig inventory has increased with 1.32% reaching 44 million heads in October. Exports are up 12.9% compared to 2018, with China accounting for more than 25% of the Spanish pork exports. Spain has 48 processing establishments authorized for export of meat and pork products to China", she said in a report.

The volume exported in the Chinese market (502,388 tonnes) is up by 83.10% compared to 2018. Other important markets are as follows: France - 255,720 tons or 12.80% of total exports; Italy -153,057 tons or 7.60% of total exports; Japan - 117,814 tons or 5.90% of total exports; Portugal - 101,476 tons or 5.10% of total exports. "For 2020, the Spanish market is optimistic, against the fact that African swine fever (ASF) is still a threat to Europe. This year's price started at €1.49/kg live weight, up by almost 45% compared with the one recorded in January 2019 (€1,038/kg live weight). As new year prices are going strong, there are rumors of expansion, but China and ASF still cast a shadow of uncertainty over the industry, added Mrs. Vega.
However, slaughter capacity has been increased last year, with the entry into operation of the new facilities of the Pini Group, which is already processing around 70,000 pigs per week.
    Industry 2020-01-30 06:41:07 2025-07-03 23:21:04 Details Edit Delete
3564 NZ lamb exports to France, Germany fell by 16% The gap was filled mainly with British lamb, well placed to capitalize on New Zealand redirecting its exports towards Asia.
New Zealand's lamb exports to Europe have fallen in the first 11 months of 2019 as China's increased demand for meat rerouted the shipments to Asia. According to AHDB analysts, France and Germany have seen the largest reduction in lamb imports from New Zealand, 16% and 15% respectively. Also, a decline in lamb imports in the French market was seen at other suppliers such as Spain and Ireland, both down by 4%. "These reductions were balanced by increased imports from the UK though, up 8%. The UK was already France’s largest supplier of fresh and frozen sheep meat and was well placed to capitalize on New Zealand redirecting its exports towards Asia by upping exports to ‘fill the gaps’. The value of these imports fell just under 5%, as average prices fell.
Total fresh and frozen sheep meat imports into Germany dropped in the year to November, down 11% to 38,000 tonnes. Imports from New Zealand, Germany’s biggest supplier were down 15% to 17,500 tonnes and though imports have increased from the UK by 15%, this has not been enough to compensate for the reduction in volume from New Zealand", commented Jennie Tanner, AHDB analyst.
Sheep meat production in Germany was static in the year to October 2019, at 20,000 tonnes. October continued that trend, unchanged from 2018 at 2,000 tonnes. Germany is not a large exporter of sheepmeat and exports were fairly static in the year to November, down just over 1% to 5,600 tonnes. Exports to their biggest markets the Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden all fell though there were small increases in Italy and exports to Denmark increased back to levels more similar to 2017.
In France, production in the year to November was virtually unchanged from 2018 (-0.7%), at 75,000. A very slight increase in carcass weights helped to maintain production, as the number of animals killed fell 1.2% to 3.85 million head.
    Market 2020-01-31 06:21:30 2025-07-04 01:09:55 Details Edit Delete
3561 Cherkizovo added 145,000 tonnes of chicken meat in output The company remains Russia's top chicken meat producer for the second year in a row.
In 2019, Cherkizovo has increased its chicken meat production to 766,000 tonnes in live weight, adding 145,000 tonnes in output, according to a press release from the company. The results secured Cherkizovo's position at the top of the Russian poultry industry, with 121,000 tonnes more than its closest competitor's. This is the second year in a row for Cherkizovo to rank as the main poultry producer in Russia.
The Company’s poultry division enjoyed a great deal of success in 2019. One of the milestones was China’s decision to open up its market to Russian poultry, which led to increased output and provided a significant boost to Cherkizovo's exports. Completion of the first stage of upgrade at Altaisky Broiler, which was acquired in December 2018, helped launch there the production of goods under Russia's most popular chilled poultry brand – "Petelinka". Last autumn, this range was rolled out in the Siberian Federal District. Another positive development for the division was the decision to step up cooperation with the country’s fast-food chains.

This year, Cherkizovo Group plans to continue ramping up its poultry capacities, with Altaisky Broiler standing to receive a twofold increase over the course of two years and gain even greater prominence in Siberia’s poultry market. 3562 UK's immigration policy to hit the poultry sector "They have failed miserably," said Richard Griffiths, Chief Executive of British Poultry Council.
The recommendations made by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) of using a combination of skill and salary thresholds will have the largest impact on British food producers, with the poultry meat industry being the hardest hit, warns the British Poultry Council (BPC).

"We value all of our workforce, wherever they come from, but the MAC report fails to respond to the current need for labour in the poultry industry post-Brexit. Poultry is half the meat the country eats. Our sector has grown significantly, beyond the UK labour availability in the areas we operate, and 60% of our workforce (22,800 people) are EU nationals who ensure safe, nutritious and affordable food is available for all.

If the MAC’s intention is to base its recommendations on what it sees as ‘being in the best interest of the resident population’ then they have failed miserably," said Richard Griffiths, Chief Executive of British Poultry Council.
The lack of workforce in farming and food processing was one of the most discussed topics related to Brexit event as the lack of personnel may block the development of businesses and set the stage for a two-tier food system where we import food produced to lower standards and only the affluent can afford quality British produce.
"We are calling on the Government to protect the necessary access to non-UK labour that poultry producers need to be able to fill the 7,200 vacancies within the industry every year. This will enable our sector to continue to flourish and feed the nation with food produced to the high standards it demands," urged Mr. Griffiths.
    Industry 2020-01-30 11:31:04 2025-07-02 23:55:54 Details Edit Delete
