366 The US pork producers urge Congress to support agricultural research

Speaking to the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology Subcommittee on Research and Technology, NPPC chief veterinarian Dr. Liz Wagstrom said that due to the United States's historical commitment to research, the country is the "lowest-cost and most technologically innovative producer of food in the world … and has the safest food on the planet".

The US pork industry found ways to tackle with diseases such as Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome and the H1N1 influenza virus thanks to the research conducted in the country.

"A disease the pork industry and other livestock sectors are particularly concerned about, Wagstrom testified, is Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD). The United States doesn’t have enough vaccine to address an FMD outbreak, which, if unchecked, would cost the pork, beef, corn and soybean sectors, alone, $200 billion over 10 years," the NPPC statement read.

NPPC is urging Congress to establish and fund through the next Farm Bill a manufacturer-managed FMD vaccine bank and is requesting funds for animal disease diagnostics and research that “can help address the alarming gap in the government’s preparedness for an FMD outbreak.”

Dr. Wagstrom also told the subcommittee that the federal commitment to agricultural research seems to have waned recently, pointing out that from 1970 to 2008 50 percent of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s budget went to research but by 2013 it was less than 30 percent.
    Industry 2017-11-06 07:01:21 2025-08-01 06:19:22 Details Edit Delete
505 Copa-Cogeca urge EU Farm Ministers to allocate a strong budget for CAP During a high-level meeting with the Estonian Presidency, Copa and Cogeca told EU Farm Ministers that the new EU Commission Communication on the future of food and farming is a good starting point. It is ambitious and as such requires the appropriate levels of funding.

Speaking on behalf of European farmers and cooperatives, Cogeca President Thomas Magnusson said it is good that the plan keeps both pillars of the CAP and maintains direct payments to farmers. “It will be important to ensure that simplification delivers results for farmers,” he explained. “The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) should remain a common policy without any further re-nationalisation and the budget ceiling should be increased to above 1% of the Gross National Income. This will allow farmers and their cooperatives to adequately exploit the future opportunities open to European agriculture.”

He went on to welcome news that there will be a strong rural development pillar ensuring the vitality of rural areas. He stressed that access to broadband will be vital for farmers and cooperatives to make use of new technologies like smart farming and encourage the next generation of farmers to stay on the land.
    Industry 2017-12-13 06:32:07 2025-07-30 19:56:36 Details Edit Delete
790 South Africans are calling for a total overhaul of the entire food safety system The measure is desperately needed as the biggest listeriosis outbreak in the world killed 164.

South Africa is in need of a major reform in food safety system after a mysterious outbreak of listeria killed 164 of 872 confirmed cases in the last month. 43% of the dead are babies, informs Food Safety News magazine.
The situation is causing panic among the local population or a state of "listeria hysteria" as the president of South African Association of Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST), Lucia Anelich, called it. 90% of the cases presented the same strain of infection which led to the conclusion that the source of the disease was a single food product or range of food products consumed often and by both rich and poor across South Africa; “Cold meats, for example, range from viennas and polony to more expensive slices of ham.”, assumed Anelich. A food safety expert and an epidemiologist with listeriosis experience have been sent to South Africa by the World Health Organization (WHO) to help identify the source of the outbreak.

WHO officials are criticizing the South African authorities for ignoring the risk of an outbreak and maintaining the number of environmental health practitioners responsible for monitoring all food outlets from restaurants to informal vendors under 2,000 when the system is in need of at least 5,000 practitioners. Also, the public request a dramatic overhaul of our legislation and the entire food safety system, as Lucia Anelich pointed out after a SAAFoST workshop on this subject.
    Industry 2018-02-16 16:00:07 2025-08-01 04:12:51 Details Edit Delete
5614 Germany: Poultry industry sees large gaps in the draft law on state animal husbandry labeling As various media reports, a draft law on state animal husbandry labeling is currently circulating within the federal government.

So far, this has been a model of no value for the German poultry industry: the paper is largely limited to the retail marketing channel, ignoring the entire area of out-of-home consumption and catering and also forgets to include processed meat products in the regulatory area. "The present draft bill cannot and must not become law in this form," criticizes Friedrich-Otto Ripke, President of the Central Association of the German Poultry Industry.

The draft bill builds on the key issues paper for state animal husbandry labeling recently presented by Federal Minister Cem Özdemir. A mandatory mark on meat packaging is planned, which will in future provide consumers with transparent information about how an animal was kept in Germany.

For President Friedrich-Otto Ripke, the draft submitted is a slap in the face to German meat producers: “This would make Germany, with its animal keepers and companies, completely uncompetitive within the EU as a livestock location. Not a single word is explained to local farmers as to how they are to finance the required conversion of their stables. In addition to these enormous financial burdens, there is still no provision for mandatory labeling of origin on all marketing channels as a clear indication and appreciation of German goods. That cannot work – especially not in times of inflation with a clear trend towards buying cheaper groceries.”

The application to all out-of-home consumption is also not provided in the draft law. “Our federal minister knowingly forgets to regulate more than half of the market. More than 50% of meat sales flow into this area. Here in particular, more transparency about the husbandry and origin of animals would be particularly important. To dispense with the mandatory labeling there is deadly for the local population in the long run added value,” Ripke continues. Foreign goods with significantly lower animal husbandry standards will be processed even more in gastronomy, canteens and wholesalers and displace German goods: “Federal Minister Özdemir is actively triggering meat imports with the proposal from his house that has become public. That cannot and must not be his intention and the Bundestag must prevent this!”

The President notes that, for constitutional reasons, the Bundestag cannot accept that no further labels for the type of husbandry should be allowed in addition to the state husbandry label. “We will not allow ourselves to be banned from the tried-and-tested label of the Animal Welfare Initiative, which is now well known to three quarters of German consumers and which is present on over 80% of foods containing poultry!” stresses Friedrich-Otto Ripke.

    Industry adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2022-08-02 04:28:11 2025-08-02 22:51:30 Details Edit Delete

274 Pig prices in the UK continue to decline In the last week of September, the EU-spec Standard Pig Prices (SPP) reported another fall, by 0.6% week on week. Still, the price reported was 160.44 pence per kilogram, which is 18.21 pence higher than the levels reported earlier this year, according to UK's Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).

Slaughterings increased in the last week of September by 12%, reaching 184,300 head, after three weeks of consecutive declines.

"Although this is a rise of over 4% on the equivalent week last year, it follows a 9% fall on the year last week. Declines in previous weeks have been largely attributed to continued plant breakdowns, hence the increase this week is likely a result of previously held back pigs being brought into the production cycle. Demand reportedly remains subdued, adding to the pressure on prices," AHDB trainee analyst, Annie Linekar, explained.

The average weights for carcases reached 84.65 kilograms with an increase of 390 grams in the week ended September 30 and compared to year-earlier weights the rise was 2.25 kilograms. According to the AHDB analyst, this is the highest weight recorded since the series began, the scale of this increase being influenced by the disruption reported in the production.

Another decline was reported by the EU-spec average pig price (APP) in the week ended 23 September, of 0.73 pence week on week to 165.00p/kg. "This returns the APP to levels last seen at the start of June. Meanwhile, the gap between the APP and SPP widened to 3.96p."

Weaner prices moved in opposing directions in the week ended 30 September. 30kg weaner prices declined £1.91 on the week to £58.31/head, overriding the previous week’s increase but remaining £8.95 above year-earlier levels. 7kg weaner prices increased by £1.26 to £44.03/head and were £7.60 higher year on year.
    Market 2017-10-06 13:00:06 2025-08-03 03:32:01 Details Edit Delete

The total size market for the agricultural products in Singapore was at about $9.3 billion in 2017 of which $9.2 billion stand for imports. 440 UK pork exports to China are increasing Fresh/frozen pork exports to China increased by 7% to 2.97 tons year-on-year during the month, according to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).

Shipments to Denmark, likely for re-export, also recorded a 21% growth (+480 tonnes) in volume compared to the month in 2016, while exports to Germany increased by 6% (+160 tonnes).

Despite this growth, official HMRC figures show overall exports of fresh/frozen pork were still down 12% year-on-year during September, at 15.2 thousand tonnes. However, this was primarily due to an unusually large decline in shipments recorded to Ireland, which should be viewed with caution as the same drop is not reflected in the Irish import figures for September. UK exports of processed pig meat were also impacted by a significant decline in trade with Ireland that does not reflect the Irish trade data.

As a higher value market for UK exports, the apparent fall in exports to Ireland also meant the value of fresh/frozen pork exports during the month fell ahead of volume. At £18.6 million, the UK’s pork export market was worth 18% less than in September 2016.

For pig offal exports, volumes increased 3% on the month last year to 6.4 thousand tonnes. Shipments to the largest market, China, actually declined 12% (-350 tonnes). However, this was more than compensated for by a 9% (+120 tonnes) increase to Hong Kong, and healthy growth from the smaller markets; Denmark, the Philippines and Ivory Coast.
    Market 2017-11-23 07:00:22 2025-07-29 13:33:58 Details Edit Delete
86 UK signed a new export deal with China which will bring 200 million pounds ($259 million) to the UK food industry and provide 1,500 jobs, according to George Eustice, UK Food Minister.

Seven new businesses in England and Northern Ireland have received approval to export pork, including three producers that will, in a UK first, trade trotters, which are considered a delicacy in China.

The new deal, that will allow for 1,500 jobs to be created across the country, comes after the news that the UK food and drink exports reached 10 billion pounds for the first semester of 2017.

"China is a hugely important market for our world-class food industry and by opening up access even further, more UK businesses can take advantage of the growing appetite for our food and drink," Food Minister George Eustice said.

"British food is produced to the very best standards of welfare, quality and safety and this growth in exports to China is creating more jobs and opportunities for our premium pork producers who can guarantee quality from farm to fork," Mr. Eustice added.

According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), Chinese demand for British pork has doubled in the last three years, as total value of food and drink exports to China increased by a third to 438million pounds in 2016. 400 New Zealand's red meat sector welcomes TPP deal Beef and Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) and the Meat Industry Association (MIA) welcome the announcement a deal has been struck to move ahead with the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, which is now called the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Sam McIvor, Chief Executive of B+LNZ, says the CPTPP will deliver significant gains to the sector.

"New Zealand’s regions are hugely reliant on revenue flowing as a result of exports. Trade is the lifeblood of our sector, which in turn creates jobs and supports communities around New Zealand," the Chief Executive of B+LNZ said.

According to Mr. McIvor, over 90% of New Zealand’s sheepmeat and 80% of New Zealand's beef production is exported. "These exports support around 60,000 jobs on farms and in processing companies, and a further 20,000 jobs in supplying sectors."

Mr. McIvor also said that the CPTPP agreement will open up simultaneously multiple markets in Japan, Mexico, Peru and Canada. This will place New Zealand among the major red meat exporters in the Asia Pacific region, such as Australia and the European Union.

Tim Ritchie, Chief Executive of MIA says since Australia’s 2015 trade agreement with Japan, their beef exports to Japan have increased by $NZ1 billion, while New Zealand’s have fallen by $NZ30 million.

“Demand in Japan for beef has been growing, but we have lost significant market share. The situation got tougher in August when Japan imposed a WTO safeguard on frozen beef, raising its tariff on New Zealand exports from 38.5 percent to 50 percent, while Australia only faces a tariff of 22 percent. Since the safeguard was applied, our frozen beef exports to Japan have fallen by 70 percent.”

The agreement captures all of the market access gains of the previous TPP agreement. However, it also addresses some of the concerns of the New Zealanders around TPP – the preservation of PHARMC, foreign ownership of land and housing, and freedom to regulate for our own environmental protection.

Meanwhile, the sector is also celebrating the release of a WTO Appellate Body report which upholds the initial findings of the New Zealand-led dispute against Indonesia on a range of agricultural non-tariff barriers.

Mr. Ritchie says these barriers have impacted on New Zealand beef exports to Indonesia and have contributed to a decline of over 80% since 2010 – costing the sector an estimated $1 billion in lost trade.

    Market 2017-11-14 10:10:37 2025-08-02 15:45:55 Details Edit Delete
