1948 2.7 tonnes of pork products recalled in the US
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said the items were shipped to retail locations in western New York as intact loaves for slicing.

The problem was discovered on Sept. 20, 2018 by FSIS inspectors while performing routine label verification activities. FSIS discovered that the establishment’s formulation for the use of sodium nitrite, a restricted ingredient, exceeded the regulatory limit.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

    Industry 2018-09-24 06:25:44 2025-08-01 23:44:40 Details Edit Delete
1947 EU pork exports recorded an increase in volume in July EU exports of fresh and frozen pork rose by 3% in July compared with a year earlier, to 164,000 tonnes, according to data from Eurostat.
Duncan Wyatt, Lead Analyst at UK's Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board, said that, however, the EU pork exports fell in value by 9% year-on-year to €359 million due to a drop of 14% in export prices across the region.

The EU reported a decrease in its pork shipments to China by 5% year-over-year in July. Wyatt said that although there was a brief upturn in June, exports to China are returning to the recent trend of decline.

Exports to EU's leading export market by value, Japan, declined by 7% year-on-year in July due to falling export prices but remained stable in volume at 27,000 tonnes. Pork shipments to Hong Kong also fell by 44% (4,500 tonnes) on the year.

Wyatt added that the export growth in July was based substantially on the export to South Korea, the Philippines and notably Ukraine, which imported an additional 15%, 24% and 400% respectively. Exports to Ukraine have grown significantly over the past year to 3,700 tonnes in July, making it the eighth largest destination for EU pork in the month.
    Market 2018-09-24 06:18:39 2025-08-01 18:45:24 Details Edit Delete

1945 Change of suppliers for Kuwait Livestock Transport and Trading The biggest buyer of Australian sheep is now turning to South Africa for livestock imports.
The biggest buyer of Australian sheep, Kuwait Livestock Transport and Trading (KLTT), also known as Al Mawashi has changed its supplier, as a new live export subsidiary was established in South Africa, similar to Rural Export Trading WA (RETWA) that operates in West Australia.
Establishing operations in South Africa would spell the end to Australia’s 40-year exclusivity arrangement of supplying sheep to KLTT, which was buying up to two-thirds of the 1.8 million Australian sheep exported each year, reports The West Australian newspaper.
The Australian Livestock Exporters’ Council, of which RETWA is a member, confirmed it was aware of Al Mawashi’s decision to establish operations in South Africa.

“Al Mawashi’s announcement to the Kuwait Stock Exchange confirms what the company has foreshadowed for many months; namely that it will continue to seek out reliable sources of live sheep in the future,” an ALEC spokesperson said.

“We respect Al Mawashi’s decision, but from an Australian perspective we want to ensure that our producers continue to have access to crucial markets in the Middle East by demonstrating we are a reliable, ethical and competitive supplier of healthy, high-quality sheep.”
The decision follows a huge scandal regarding the livestock condition of transportation to Middle East countries and the transporter, Australian company Emanuel, lost its license.
For the moment, KLTT didn't make any comment on this decision, but, a few months ago, chief executive Osama Boodai warned the firm was looking to diversify its suppliers.

“We need a reliable, 12-month-a-year supply, and if we can’t get it from Australia, we’ll be forced to look elsewhere — not just for the (Northern Hemisphere) summer, but for the whole year,” Mr Boodai said.
    Market 2018-09-23 11:55:55 2025-08-01 23:37:49 Details Edit Delete

1943 Thirteen countries have banned pork imports from Belgium Thirteen countries have imposed bans on the imports of pork and pork products from Belgium after the Belgian authorities detected ten cases of African swine fever disease in wild boars.
The Belgian meat federation, Febev, has announced that the countries that applied restrictions on Belgian pork shipments are South Korea, China, Taiwan, Belarus, Mexico, the Philippines, Japan, South Africa, Singapore, Uruguay, Australia and Malaysia, Brussels Times reports.

The authorities announced that the restrictions vary from country to country. Some countries have imposed bans only on gelatine products, while others have restricted the imports of living animals.

Until now, there have been no cases of ASF reported in any of the Belgian pig farms.

Michael Gore, CEO of Febev, said in a statement that non-EU countries have strict import regulations which require the country with which they have trade agreements to be free of African swine fever. Mr. Gore added that with these countries ”there is no margin for negotiations; the imports are suspended.”

As explained by Febev's CEO, the Belgian pork industry is negatively impacted by the recent import restrictions as 45% out of its total pork shipments to third countries finally reach the Chinese and South Korean markets.
    Industry 2018-09-21 16:01:36 2025-08-01 23:59:51 Details Edit Delete
1942 South Korea is showing interest in Spanish traditional products An official delegation paid a visit to a processing facility in Seva to see how the Salchichon de Vic PGI sausages are made.
Representatives from the Korea Food Research Institute (KFRI) and the National Service for Quality Management of Agricultural Products (NAQ) visited a meat plant in Catalonia to see the exact process of making traditional sausages.
The South Korean delegation was received at the Splendid Foods plant in Seva where the guests learned about the quality systems of the Salchichon de Vic PGI and its process of elaboration and certification.
The visit is part of the market research that both organizations are doing on the certification system, the criteria that follow and the manufacturing process of different products, for the development they are carrying out of a certification system and standards food for traditional foods, reports CdeComunicacion magazine.
KFRI and NAQ are funded by the Korean Government and are responsible for certification and research in the fields of food, agriculture and fishing industry, in order to continue working on the development of the food industry in their country and the quality of life of consumers in South Korea.
According to Eurostat data, EU pork exports to South Korea rose by 15% in July, this year, compared to the same month of 2017. 1941 China suspends internal pork transportation in 18 provinces The lockdown is affecting the domestic market and analysts are expecting a supply gap of 2 to 3 million tonnes in the following months.
Pig and pig meat transportation has been banned in 11 provinces adjacent to the 7 provinces where the African swine fever epidemic occurred, announced the Ministry of Agriculture in China. By now there are 20 cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in seven provinces and the scenario is looking darker day after day.
"These growing and more frequent reports are affecting producer’s actions and also market conditions. We are being told that many farms are locking down and not allowing their people out nor outside people in. Bio-security has long been a challenge in China and now owners and managers are taking unprecedented steps to protect their facilities from contracting this devastating disease.

Who knows how long farm workers will be content under these lockdown conditions, but many farms are now providing housing, cafeteria, laundry and even barbershop services for their workers. Many farms are becoming almost like small communities with all the comforts of home and even recreational facilities. So they may be able to withstand these conditions for some time.

However, local markets are reported to be very volatile as no pigs can ship to a naive province from any of the provinces infected with ASF. Nor can pigs be transported from the province of the neighbour of the infected province. That had caused a big variance on hog price from the province to province", reports Lyle Jones, Director of Sales in China, Genesus Inc.

Supply and demand within each province are affecting market hog prices. Those provinces within restricted zones may experience shortages of pork and increasing prices in the marketplace and the first effects are expected to be seen in the large cities of China.

As live markets in the are also blocked, small farmers will suffer the most, despite the fact that the prices are rising. "We would expect pork prices to increase from countries free of ASF while filling the void that likely will occur from demand in China and other Asian countries", added Lyle Jones.

No one can tell right now how this story will end for the world's pork largest producer as other cases are expected due to the fast spreading of the virus. "It is unlikely that this disease has been contained, and additional cases are expected to be reported. To contain the spread of the virus, China has restricted the movement of live animals within the seven provinces with ASF cases, as well as the eleven neighbouring provinces.

While the long-term repercussions are unclear, what we know today is that the curb on the transport of animals within China has created significant dislocations in animal and/or pork supplies. Surplus pork is weighing on markets as producers rush to market healthy stock. At the same time, prices in urban centres, along with regions in eastern and southern China, without readily available production have seen as much as a 40% increase in prices since transport bans were implemented", explains Christine McCracken, Senior-Analyst, Animal Protein at Rabobank.
Using the blue ear disease (PRRS) outbreak in 2007, as a reference, McCracken believes that "a supply gap of as much as 2m to 3m tonnes could emerge in the coming months".
Uncertainties are present also in EU, one of the major suppliers of pork for China, where ASF outbreaks have been confirmed in the Eastern European countries and some other cases were reported at wild boar population in Belgium, near the borders with France and Germany.
In fact, Western European countries are providing 35% of the global pork exports and the other important players that are not affected at this point buy the disease are few in numbers: the US, Canada and Brazil.
"By early 2019, we expect markets to have a better understanding of the outbreak and resulting import needs. If the virus spreads in Europe via the feral pig population, we believe there could be significant export demand for US, Canadian, and Brazilian pork, as well as sizable demand for competing proteins (beef, chicken, and seafood).

The potential spread of the disease throughout Asia and/or Europe also poses a great risk to North American and South American producers. Efforts to find and close all potential methods of contamination are underway. We believe import-dependent nations will build stocks where possible and begin establishing ASF-free suppliers. This may work to the benefit of North American and South American pork exporters, as well as global poultry and beef suppliers. We believe China and affected parts of Europe will work to isolate and eliminate the source(s) of contamination. Nevertheless, efforts to rebuild secure supplies are likely to take months," says the analyst.
In her opinion, the Chinese consumer is expected to seek alternatives in other animal protein existing on the market, such as poultry, farmed whitefish, and even beef, as the prices for pork are expected to go higher and higher in the next period.
    Industry 2018-09-21 12:10:17 2025-08-01 10:25:04 Details Edit Delete

1937 AEB wants to increase the egg exports to the Caribbean and Mexico markets 20 key egg buyers from the Caribbean and Mexico to meet one-on-one with US egg suppliers and producers while at Americas Food and Beverage Show in Miami.
The American Egg Board (AEB) and the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council (USAPEEC) are trying to strengthen their global connections and tap new markets, this week, during the Americas Food and Beverage Show in Miami.
20 key buyers from the Caribbean and Mexico are expected to meet one-on-one with US egg suppliers and producers during the event. The two markets are targeted by AEB and USAPEEC for their potential and these sessions will give the Caribbean and Mexican buyers first-hand insight into how US eggs and egg products can tap into growing market demand and benefit their businesses' bottom lines.
The Caribbean and Mexican markets represent a strong growth opportunity for US egg exports. For 2017, the Caribbean ranked third and Mexico ranked fourth in value among U.S. export destinations for table eggs and products. These markets rank behind only Hong Kong and Canada, respectively.

"The American Egg Board is excited to pursue growth opportunities in key international markets. We welcome the occasion to create educational moments and meaningful connections with buyers from the Caribbean and Mexico, and – with the support of partners like USAPEEC – to bring new egg inspiration to the Americas Food and Beverage show," said Anne L. Alonzo, AEB President and CEO.

Exports to the Caribbean accounted for 13.2% of US table egg export volume in 2017. US egg exports to the Caribbean more than quadrupled from 2010 to 2017, reaching $26.9 million in 2017, accounting for 10.8% of the $249 million total value of US egg exports. Top markets in the Caribbean include the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Cayman Islands, and the Dominican Republic. Exports to Mexico accounted for 12.1% of US table egg export volume in 2017, reaching $27 million and accounting for 10.9% of total value of US overall egg exports in 2017.

    Market 2018-09-20 16:10:08 2025-08-01 14:59:53 Details Edit Delete
1936 US cattle industry to exit the expansion cycle The herd inventory growth rate is expected to slow down in the next couple of years.
By 2020, the cattle expansion cycle in the US is expected to go flat, according to a forecast presented in Drovers magazine by the Livestock Marketing Information Center.
Uncertainties present in the markets nowadays and potential headwinds for global meat trade could dampen demand for beef, and therefore cattle.
For 2019, analysts predict a rather modest year-over-year increase in beef production, of 1% or 2% and that is to be considered only in normal weather condition. That would be the smallest percentage increase since 2015.
In the first quarter of 2019 fed cattle prices could be below the 2018’s. In subsequent quarters prices are forecast to be similar to a year earlier. A normal 2019 Midwest corn crop would set the stage for steady to modestly higher yearling and calf cattle prices in the second half of 2019 compared to the corresponding quarters in 2018.

If recent trends persist regarding cow and heifer slaughter levels, 2020 could mark the end of the current U.S. cattle inventory build-up. Preliminary forecasts place the beef output in 2020 unchanged to up 2% year-over-year. If the U.S. economy is still growing in 2020 and export markets do not deteriorate, expect modest year-over-year gains in prices forecast during that year, says the analysis.
    Industry 2018-09-20 15:42:21 2025-08-01 20:57:49 Details Edit Delete
1935 EU is desperately looking for an ASF vaccine Meantime, stricter measures have been implemented in order to stop the spreading of the disease.
African swine fever outbreaks could become soon a nightmare for the European meat industry, as the disease is threatening to spread across the continent.
New measures have been adopted to stop the virus to affect other countries and the rules are to be revised in 2021. By now, according to the map presented by the European Commission, outbreaks have been reported in former USSR states Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The disease has been reported in wild boar population in Belgium, near the border of France and Luxembourg (see map).

New measures have been imposed this summer for the member states affected by the disease regarding pig farming, especially for outdoor farms systems, and for wild boar population. The EU legislation regarding the affected areas is fully in line with the OIE international standards. Nevertheless, in order to ensure a higher level of animal health protection, the EU goes beyond the OIE requirements and applies stricter standards. In the current application of regionalisation in Lithuania, Poland and Latvia, for example, no pigs, their semen, embryos or ova are allowed to be moved from the infected area.
At the same time, the European Commission is looking for a vaccine against ASF but that could take a long time. "The Commission has requested to the African Swine Fever EURL (specific mandate EU co-funded) to prepare a valuable document collecting all scientific work, identifying gaps and needs for possible vaccine development and proposing roads to achieve the final goal: the development of an effective and safe vaccine against ASF", says a document released by EC.
As the disease is also present in other regions of the world (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, China, African countries), analysts are predicting a major shift in pork industry. "The spread of African Swine Fever in China – and more recently to Belgium (close to France and Germany) – has substantially altered the outlook for the pork industry around the world. Prospects for improved export demand have grown following recent events, while the potential for the disease to spread globally has grown exponentially. The 13 September discovery of ASF-positive feral pig carcasses in southern Belgium is a cause for serious concern. Feral pig populations in the region are dense – and if the disease is now in the population, it will be difficult to contain its spread. We expect European officials to implement strict biosecurity measures in response, but if feral pigs carry ASF into export-heavy countries like France or Germany, global trade could be significantly impacted. Any disruption in exports from top European trade partners would leave Asia with few options", explained Christine McCracken
Senior Analyst – Animal Protein at Rabobank.
ASF is a viral disease caused by a complex DNA virus that affects only porcine species of all breeds and ages. It appears among pigs, warthogs, bush pigs, European wild boar and American wild pigs.

The disease is present in Africa, mainly in many countries located south of the Sahara, in most of which the disease is endemic. 1931 Local authorities in Poland fear for the worst in front of ASF spreading The number of vets is insufficient and the pork sector seems to be heading towards an unprecedented crisis.
Poland local authorities believe that the pork sector is heading towards an unprecedented crisis as the African swine fever outbreaks seems to multiply this year, reports Portal Spozywczy.
500 veterinary and action inspectors are missing in the field and the number of outbreaks has already reached 108, more than half all 212 detected in four years since the disease was first detected in the country.
This is a delicate moment for the pork segment as the processing facilities must import raw material to keep the production going. "If there is no raw material, meat factories will face a dilemma: will it be profitable to continue production thanks to meat import or shut down", resume the problem Aleksander Dargiewicz, director of the office of the National Union of Employers of Swine Producers.
Pork and beef processing facilities in Poland are responsible for more than 90,000 employees and the sector also comprise the transporters working in the field of feed and 130,000 farms.
Besides Poland, other European countries are facing the same problem: Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Russia. ASF was also reported last week on wild boar population in Belgium, near to the French Border and governments in France, Spain and Germany have already taken strict measures to avoid the spreading of the disease.
China was also hit by the virus, with more than 15 outbreaks reported in one month and a half and the risk of the disease spreading through Asia is considerable, according to the latest Food and Agriculture Organization report.
One analysis presented this summer by a Polish scientist mentions the possibility for the disease to spread to Germany in less than four years. For now, there is no vaccine for ASF and the only measures recommended in case of an outbreak is culling down the animals infected and quarantine the areas affected.
    Industry 2018-09-19 14:28:40 2025-08-01 16:33:07 Details Edit Delete

1928 Trump hits Chinese seafood sector with new tariffs Starting September 24, 10% tariffs will be levied on Chinese seafood entering the United States and that is just the beginning.
Most of the Chinese seafood exported to the US is now subject to another round of retaliatory measures adopted in the US-China trade war, informs Seafood Source magazine. Starting September 24, 10% tariffs will apply to these products and the levy is expected to increase from 1 January 2019 – after the holiday shopping season – when the tariffs will grow to 25%, announced the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) after receiving the White House decision.
"After a thorough study, the USTR concluded that China is engaged in numerous unfair policies and practices relating to United States technology and intellectual property – such as forcing United States companies to transfer technology to Chinese counterparts. These practices plainly constitute a grave threat to the long-term health and prosperity of the United States economy", said the statement issued by president Donald Trump.
Trump threatened an additional USD 267 billion (€228 billion) in tariffs – covering practically all Chinese exports to the US – if China takes retaliatory action. The Trump administration has already instituted two rounds of tariffs on China, affecting approximately USD 50 billion (€42.7 billion) in Chinese goods.
The Chinese counterpart issued a statement to announce that the country will retaliate “in a synchronous manner.” Tariffs from 5% to 10% are expected for different American goods in the next weeks.
"The U.S. side insisted on imposing tariffs, which has brought new uncertainty to the bilateral negotiations. We hope that the U.S. side will recognize the negative consequences of such acts and take convincing measures to correct them in a timely manner", said the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.
One exception was made by the US administration and it regards frozen cod and pollock that is exported by American companies in China for processing and re-imported after that in the US.
    Industry 2018-09-19 09:59:07 2025-08-01 08:44:29 Details Edit Delete
