1341 | US organic meat, poultry and fish market reaches record high in 2017 | Sales of organic meat, poultry and fish in the United States have witnessed a significant boost last year as American consumers are becoming more health conscious and more demanding when it comes down to the contents of their food. |
The Organic Trade Association’s (OTA) 2018 Organic Industry Survey revealed that organic meat, poultry and fish sales in the United States have grown by 17.2% in 2017 compared to the previous year, surpassing for the first time the $1 billion threshold to $1.2 billion.

Based on data presented by OTA, in 2017, the whole organic food sector has reached a sales figure of $49.4 billion, increasing by 6.4% compared to 2016.

OTA's survey also indicated that the overall growth rate of the organic food sector was slowed down by the poor increase in sales in the organic dairy and egg category, which had a growth rate situated below 9% compared to the level reported in 2016.

Still, OTA says that the growth rate of total organic food sales grew 1.1%, while organic food products are now accounting for 5.5% of the food sold in retail channels in the US.

"Organic has arrived. And everyone is paying attention,” said Laura Batcha, CEO and Executive Director of the Organic Trade Associaion. “Our survey shows there are now certified organic products in the marketplace representing all stages of the life cycle of a product or a company—from industry veterans to start-ups that are pioneering leading edge innovation and benefits and getting shelf space for the first time. Consumers love organic, and now we’re able to choose organic in practically every aisle in the store.”

Furthermore, OTA said that a market which faced unique challenges in 2017 was the organic egg market. Pasture-raised eggs, which clearly delineate humane practices such as outdoor access, presented stiff competition for organic eggs in 2017.
"Consumers perceive organic as requiring a number of humane practices including outdoor access for livestock and poultry. However, the requirements as written within current federal organic standards are unclear and inconsistently applied. The organic industry worked to advance the Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices rule to clarify required practices, but the rule was abruptly withdrawn by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2017," OTA's news release said.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-05-30 11:08:27 | 2025-08-16 03:34:58 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1340 | Cheap fish in Thailand is filling the country with "seafood tourists" from China | Higher prices in the domestic market are sending Chinese consumers abroad in search of less expensive seafood delicacies. |
Higher prices for seafood in China is developing new industries in Southeast Asia such as tourism, reports Seafood source magazine.
"Seafood tourists" is the new type of visitor that is often encountered in Southeast Asian countries, such as Thailand, the most popular destination for Chinese in 2017, as mentioned in a Ctrip report.
As China has decided to shut down domestic fishing in some areas to conserve fishery stocks, in March 2018 the average seafood prices went up by 7.11% year-on-year, according to a survey conducted by China's Agriculture Ministry.
In luxury restaurants in Beijing, for example, live tropical reef fish has a price tag that ranges from $100 to $300 and that can explain why the seafood importers and vendors in Bangkok are mentioning the Chinese tourism as a driver for seafood consumption in recent years.
Nevertheless, this situation has a dark side of the story as the seafood smuggling has intensified in the last couple of years due to the flaws existing in Hong Kong's legislation on fish&seafood imports. The local rules omit live fish imports from having to be recorded by the city’s Fish Marketing Organization, as currently, only "dead" or frozen imports are recorded. About 60% of the fish brought into Hong Kong ends up in mainland China, often smuggled over the border, according to a report published recently by the University of Hong Kong’s Swire Institute of Marine Sciences in cooperation with ADM Capital Foundation and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Coral Triangle Program. (The Coral Triangle area refers to an area of great biodiversity spanning a large part of Southeast Asia).
The impact of rising Chinese seafood consumption is likely having a direct impact on endangered species in Southeast Asia, according to the authors of the report, who are mitigating for a higher level of education for the Chinese consumers as they are becoming a major economic force in the region.
| 1 | Market | 2018-05-30 11:10:34 | 2025-08-16 16:14:24 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1335 | New Zealand to cull 126,000 cows in the next years | The largest mass animal slaughter in the country's history represents an attempt to eradicate mycoplasma bovis cattle disease. |
New Zealand is the first country to take severe measure in order to eradicate mycoplasma bovis cattle disease that has spread to 37 farms.
126,000 cows will be slaughtered in the next few years, mentioned Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern at the beginning of this week. The operation's cost is estimated at NZ$ 800 million ($610 million) and large subsidies will be granted to the industry as the authorities are worried about the health of the national herd, informs The Guardian.
"No one ever wants to see mass culls. But the alternative is to risk the spread of the disease across our national herd. We have a real chance of eradication to protect our more than 20,000 dairy and beef farms, but only if we act now", declared Jacinda Arden.
Mycoplasma Bovis can lead to conditions such as udder infection, pneumonia and arthritis in affected cattle, but does not pose a food safety risk or any risk to humans.
The authorities are going to contribute with NZ$ 591 million ($410 million) to cover the losses resulted in the largest mass animal slaughter in the country's history. The disease was first reported on July last year but since then it has spread from the South Island to the North Island and affected 37 farms so far. Since it was first discovered, 26,000 cows have been culled.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-05-30 07:00:29 | 2025-08-16 18:23:13 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1334 | Brazil's meat industry in jeopardy for lack of feed as the fuel crisis deepens | Brazil's truckers refuse to end strike although the government recently offered a series of concessions regarding fuel prices and various Brazilian industries are struggling over lack of deliveries and transport options, Financial Times reported. |
Brazil's meat industry is in shambles after an eight-day nationwide strike over soaring fuel prices. The Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) reports disruptions in the flow of products and feed for poultry and swine farming.

According to a survey conducted by the Association with its members, trucks with feed, inputs for the production of animal feed (such as corn and soy) and other products are prevented from circulating in more than 300 points in 22 states across the country.

The association also stated that since the strike began producers had to cull nearly 70 million birds and if the crisis goes on they may be forced to dispose of a similar number of birds. ABPA says that 1 billion chickens and 20 million pigs are not receiving the necessary amount of feed. Furthermore, because of the strike, volumes close to 120,000 tons of chicken and pork have ceased to be exported.

According to Financial Times, the crisis cost the industry so far about $350 million in losses.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-05-29 13:04:56 | 2025-08-16 04:29:56 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1333 | Belgians have decreased their egg consumption during last year | The situation had nothing to do with the Fipronil crisis that affected the poultry industry in Europe and Asia. |
The egg consumption in Belgium in 2017 has decreased by 3% according to the official statistics, quoted by Retail Detail magazine. However, the market response was not generated by the Fipronil scandal that affected 15 EU countries as one could believe it.
Analysts from Gfk Belgium are convinced that higher prices and a continued shift to organic products were the main reasons behind the decrease in consumption.
On average, a Belgian bought slightly more than 71 eggs for 13.1 euro, two eggs or 3 % less than in 2016 and more than 4 eggs below the level of the record year 2013. An increase in the price of free-range eggs and organic eggs has dropped the purchase frequency from 16 to 15 times per year.
The segment of organic eggs was the only one to register a growth in terms of market share. The number of organic egg buyers grew from 24% to 27%, the product representing now 9% of the total egg sales in Belgium, with a turnover of 14%, according to the study.

Gfk analysts have observed that the drop in egg sales in Belgium was already present at the time the Fipronil crisis has started, in July 2017.
| 1 | Retail | 2018-05-29 14:02:01 | 2025-08-13 01:29:43 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1326 | EU pork exports are 10% lower than a year before | Prices are steady but the packing plant throughout the EU does not want to freeze more meat than necessary. |
Europe's exports have dropped 10% compared to a year before and the regional market is trying to accommodate to the situation. China is buying 10% less in the first two months of the year to the EU, than in the same period of 2017.
However, the prices are balanced at around 1.10 -1.20 € / kg live weight, a little bit lower than a year ago when the average on the EU market was at €1.24. Confronted with this situation Spanish producers are increasing the weight of the pigs in order to cover the marginal losses.

"The weight is well above the weights of the last 4 years - 1.78 kg higher than a year ago, but more than 3.5 kg compared with 2015. The slaughter weight is increasing little by little. On the one hand because of market change - consumers looking for meat quality. On the other hand, this helps to dilute the fixed costs of production.
There are fewer animals to sacrifice, less supply, but demand is accommodating to it. The price of meat prevents the industry from sacrificing more and maintaining its rate of slaughter so as not to worsen its exploitation account", mentions Mercedes Vega, Genesus General Director for Spain, Italy and Portugal.
Meantime, the packing plant throughout the EU, in general, does not want to freeze more meat than necessary. 1323 | Vion suspends activities at Leeuwarden abattoir | The measure was decided today and it has an immediate effect, announced the executives of the company. |
Activities at Vion's beef abattoir in Leeuwarden will temporarily be suspended due to certain experiences in the new abattoir over the past few months, announced the company in a press release published on May 25.
The company has ascertained that a few small details need to be improved at the beef abattoir, which was designed using the latest insights. The past few months have been used productively, to identify and investigate the ‘teething problems’ that can occur in a new and advanced beef abattoir such as that in Leeuwarden.

"We see a higher number of carcasses that have been rejected compared to other beef abattoirs while we use the same process.
We are working with The Netherlands food and consumer product safety authority (NVWA) to find out why.
