877 Tyson Poultry receives $2 million fine for violating Clean Water Act US based Tyson Poultry has received a $2 million fine by the federal court in Springfield, Missouri. The company will serve two years of probation and will also pay $500,000 to directly remedy the harm caused when it violated the Clean Water Act, according to the US Justice Department.
Tyson Poultry, the largest chicken producer from the US, received the fine after reporting an incident at its slaughter and processing facility in Monett, Missouri, took place. A liquid food supplement called Alimet (a very strong acid with a pH of less than one) from the Tyson facility stored in a tank had leaked, being discharged thus into the sewers from where it flowed into the City of Monett municipal waste water treatment plant.

The Justice Department said in a statement that the leakage of Alimet killed bacteria used to reduce ammonia in discharges from the treatment plant. As a result, more ammonia was released from the plant into Clear Creek, and approximately 108,000 fish were killed.

Tyson Poultry also agreed to retain an independent, third-party auditor to examine environmental compliance at Tyson Poultry facilities across the country; conduct specialised environmental training at all of its poultry processing plants, hatcheries, feed mills, rendering plants, and waste water treatment plants; and implement improved policies and procedures to address the circumstances that gave rise to these violations.

“Good corporate practices are vital to protecting public health and our nation’s natural resources,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey H. Wood for the Environment and Natural Resources Division. “When corporate misconduct disregards human safety or the environment in violation of federal laws, the Department of Justice and EPA stand ready to pursue all necessary legal relief, including criminal penalties, to ensure that these acts do not go unpunished. We hope that the outcome of this case will be a lesson for all companies that deal with dangerous wastes.”
    Industry 2018-03-01 16:37:49 2025-07-04 22:35:02 Details Edit Delete
3333 Tyson prohibits ractopamine use for pigs JBS and Smithfield have also adopted a similar measure hoping to increase sales of pork in China.
Tyson Fresh Meats is joining JBS and Smithfield by prohibiting the use of ractopamine in market hogs starting February 2020. Ractopamine is a feed ingredient that helps increase the amount of lean meat in hogs. While it is FDA-approved and considered safe for use, some countries such as China prohibit the import of pork from hogs that have been given the product.

Tyson Fresh Meats, the beef and pork subsidiary of Tyson Foods, has been offering a limited amount of ractopamine-free pork to export customers by working with farmers who raise hogs without it, and by segregating the animals and products at processing plants. However, these programs no longer adequately meet growing global demand.

“We believe the move to prohibit ractopamine use will allow Tyson Fresh Meats and the farmers who supply us to compete more effectively for export opportunities in even more countries,” stated Steve Stouffer, President, Tyson Fresh Meats. Most of the hogs delivered to the company’s pork plants are purchased from about 2,000 independent farmers. Farmers were notified of the change Wednesday and have until February 4, 2020, to meet the new requirement. The company plans to work with them over the next several months to begin the process of testing hogs to ensure they are ractopamine-free. Tyson Fresh Meats is the largest American-owned pork processor and generates almost $1 billion in pork export sales annually.
    Industry 2019-10-18 06:04:58 2025-07-05 23:54:43 Details Edit Delete

1439 Tyson-Tecumseh acquisition could lessen competition in the poultry market Industry watchdog Cornucopia Institute has warned that the Tyson Foods acquisition of Tecumseh Poultry could substantially lessen competition in the organic poultry market.
“Greater consolidation by large companies including Tyson allows them to push out smaller companies or farmstead producers who would have difficulty competing with Tyson’s superior economy of scale,” said Marie Burcham, a food and farm policy analyst with the Cornucopia Institute.

Cornucopia Institute's statement says that this is true with organic chicken and turkey because small brands are more impacted by the high costs of organic grain and limited consumer recognition. Compared to the big companies in the organic industry, small companies are struggling to stay afloat, "even though their products are often of higher quality."

“We are concerned that Tyson and other large industrial livestock producers will easily be able to beat out any competition by controlling prices and squeezing more moderate-sized processors and marketers,” said Marie Burcham, who specializes in looking at livestock issues for the Wisconsin-based Cornucopia Institute. “We already see this happening in the organic poultry market. Livestock raised with true outdoor access and local feed carry the same label as birds that are confined without outdoor access, raised using industrialized methods and fed imported grain and other feed of dubious origin.”

The market for organic poultry grew in sales volume by 8.6 percent from 2016 to 2017 (more than four times the rate of conventional poultry growth). According to USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS), the number of certified organic broilers produced in 2016 totaled more than 19 million and the number of certified organic turkeys was 410 thousand. The impressive growth of the organic poultry market in recent years made this move attractive to Tyson, with its representatives noting that the Smart Chicken brand is a leader in the organic poultry market and would give them a greater slice of that market.

The biggest players in the poultry industry, Pilgrim’s Pride, Perdue, and Tyson are heavily invested. 1383 Tysons Foods strengthens its position in the organic chicken market with new acquisition The US meat processing and packaged food group Tyson Foods recently announced the acquisition of the organic chicken brand Tecumseh Poultry LLC. The company has not offered any details regarding the transaction.
Tecumseh Poultry's operations include two plants located in Tecumseh and Waverly, Nebraska, as well as live operations. Tyson Foods currently plans to operate Tecumseh Poultry as a separate, wholly owned subsidiary and expects to retain its approximately 600 team members, including operations staff, sales teams and management.

The acquisition also includes the air-chilled Smart Chicken brand.

Tecumseh Poultry was founded in 1998 and produces air-chilled, fresh chicken, as well as deli-style chicken and a variety of chicken sausages. The air-chilling process involves using cold air to cool chicken during processing, while the most common method used by the U.S. chicken industry is water-chilling. Both methods are monitored by USDA inspectors and are considered safe.

“Consumers want choices. More and more consumers want options for fresh, organic food that fits their lifestyles,” said Eric Schwartz, chief marketing officer of Poultry for Tyson Foods. “The Smart Chicken brand is a leader in this key organic category, and the category’s growth makes this acquisition a strategic fit for Tyson Foods.”

The organic fresh chicken market grew its sales volume by 8.6% between 2016 and 2017, more than four times the rate of conventional poultry, according to Nielsen’s Perishables data.
    Industry 2018-06-06 15:34:40 2025-07-06 00:04:14 Details Edit Delete

5601 U.S. settles claims against poultry producers over worker treatment Three of the largest U.S. poultry processors have agreed to settle claims by the Justice Department over their alleged longstanding effort to share information about workers in order to drive down compensation. Cargill, Sanderson Farms and Wayne Farms have agreed to pay more than $84 million in restitution to workers harmed by the information sharing to resolve civil antitrust lawsuits, according to Reuters.
The government also sued and reached a settlement including a data consulting firm, Webber, Meng, Sahl and Co.

"Through a brazen scheme to exchange wage and benefit information, these poultry processors stifled competition and harmed a generation of plant workers who face demanding and sometimes dangerous conditions to earn a living," said Doha Mekki of the Justice Department's Antitrust Division in a statement.

Under the agreement, Cargill Meat Solutions is to pay $15 million, Sanderson will pay $38.3 million and Wayne $31.5 million.

The settlement was filed on Monday in a U.S. District Court in Maryland shortly after the lawsuits were filed.

Wayne Farms said it was glad to resolve the matter and the agreement shows its commitment to workers and farmers. Cargill denied wrongdoing but said it settled with the Justice Department to avoid litigation and distractions.

Under that agreement, the companies will not be allowed to lower the base pay of chicken growers, but will be allowed to offer incentives. 5650 U.S.: Consumers rely on chicken even as inflation affects prices While consumers average rating for their current financial situation is in the middle between “poor” and “excellent,” 87 percent are buying more or the same amount of fresh chicken now compared to six months ago.
The National Chicken Council (NCC) and WATT Global Media presented the results of a study that focused on current and anticipated U.S. consumer behavior, specifically, consumption of fresh chicken. The results suggest opportunities for chicken to maintain market share. IRI provided supporting data from its retail databases. The study was commissioned by NCC and conducted online by IRI June 30 – July 5, 2022, among 537 U.S. adults. Funding was provided by Elanco Animal Health, Evonik Animal Nutrition, NCC and WATT Global Media.

Chicken continues to be the healthy choice, best value for the money

During the past six months, 99 percent of those surveyed said they eat meals made with fresh chicken more than once a month; 88 percent do so more than once a week.

U.S. consumers plan to buy more chicken than other types of protein in the twelve months ahead. Chicken purchasers cite nutrition, value and versatility as the top reasons for consuming more chicken. When asked about the fresh proteins they plan to consume in the next 6-12 months, 37 percent said they plan to consume more chicken, while 15 percent plan to consume more beef and 14 percent plan to eat more pork.

Rising prices are attributed to higher costs of fuel, labor and chicken feed

85 percent of respondents recognize that chicken prices are higher than at the start of the year. When asked why they believe those prices are rising, 52 percent said higher energy and gas prices, 44 percent said higher wages and worker shortages across supply chains, and 42 percent cited higher prices for chicken feed. "U.S. consumers are being faced with higher costs for everything", said Tom Super, NCC senior VP of communications. "However, the data show they are continuing to rely on chicken as a healthy and affordable protein source to feed their families".

Despite evidence of intention to trade down to less expensive cuts, store brand from name brand, and value-size packs, 53 percent are keeping chicken "center of the plate", according to the research. Chris DuBois, IRI, noted, "Chicken is advantaged by the fact that Millennials buy more of it than other age groups, as well as the evidence that shows less price sensitivity for chicken than for other proteins".

While 37 percent say they will continue to eat at home the same amount, 57 percent of those surveyed said they plan to eat more meals at home than during the past six months. While 40 percent will continue to order delivery or takeout from restaurants, only 11 percent plan to increase that activity. "Eating at home saves money on food and transportation", said Joyce Neth, WATT Global Media. “Chicken is versatile and is a family-pleaser for the home cook".

Other than price, sustainability is a consideration

Consumers were asked to rate the importance of sustainability benefits when buying fresh chicken. More than half of respondents rated sustainability as very or somewhat important.

Animal welfare, packaging and carbon footprint were among the benefits rated. Neth showed examples of packaging with clear statements of benefits, "Give consumers information in simple language. Awareness is growing. Help them feel good about the chicken they are choosing".

DuBois added, "Carbon neutrality will be a huge trend. We’re seeing it across other industries and that will increase awareness for food".

Keys for profitable growth going forward

Producers, retailers and foodservice should focus on price strategies, price forecasting, promo investment, targeting communications and innovation going forward. "When the dust settles in 2023, if you’ve raised prices 20 percent over that period, you’ll be left with a higher-priced brand that needs to be supported with some sort of value proposition. Whether it’s a special benefit, package or ingredient, consumers will seek a justification for the higher prices and good reasons not to switch to a less-expensive brand", said DuBois.

In addition, sellers need to be mindful of the millennial shift that is occurring. "Millennials are replacing Boomers for share of spend. They buy different products and chicken is well-positioned as a preferred protein. Target communications and offers to them to maintain that advantage", said Neth.

Chicken has proven to be ‘inflation’ proof. According to USDA, Americans on average will eat a record 98.3 pounds of chicken per person this year. Chicken consumption is nearly twice that of beef and pork. Chicken outpaced pork in 1984 and surpassed beef as America’s favorite meat in 1991.
    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2022-08-18 04:42:27 2025-07-06 16:22:45 Details Edit Delete
