5291 Avian flu keeps spreading around the globe More than 40 countries have reported outbreaks during the last four months and OIE warns that "a further increase in outbreaks is expected in the coming months".
Avian flu threat looms over the global poultry industry as the virus is now present in Europe, Asia, North America and Africa. The highest impact was felt by the European producers, with a high number of outbreaks reported in the last four months in Poland, Ukraine, Russia, France, Italy, the UK, the Netherlands and Germany. More than that, an HPAI alert has been triggered in the Iberic Peninsula once the bird flu has reached both Portugal and Spain.
But the situation does not resume to Europe only. According to the World Organization for Animal Health, 40 countries in Europe, Asia, North America and Africa were fighting for the last months to keep the threat under control. Israel has culled over one million birds since the beginning of 2022 in what officials called "the worst bird flu outbreak ever". The H5N1, H5N3, H5N4, H5N5, H5N6 and H5N8 subtypes of HPAI are circulating in bird and poultry populations across the globe, sparking concern at OIE, which called this an “unprecedented genetic variability of subtypes ... creating an epidemiologically challenging landscape.”
Last month, OIE Director General Monique Eloit told Reuters that "this time the situation is more difficult and riskier because we see more variants emerge, which make them harder to follow. Eventually, the risk is that the virus mutates or that it mixes with a human flu virus that can be transmitted between humans then suddenly it takes on a new dimension."
Also, Germany’s Federal Research Institute for Animal Health, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute, told the German Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA) that Europe is experiencing its “strongest avian flu epidemic ever.”
The institute added that “there is no end in sight” as the virus spreads throughout the continent and around the world, with new cases reported on a daily basis. The latest cases of avian flu reported this week comes from the US, Indiana, where the virus was found on a turkey farm with 29,000 birds. Indiana is the third-largest US turkey-producing state, No. 1 in duck production and No. 2 in table eggs and egg-laying chickens, according to official data. Altogether, at least 90 cases of Eurasian H5 HPAI have been reported to the USDA since January, with nine of the cases confirmed as the H5N1 subtype. The first cases of the virus were detected in South Carolina in mid-January before the virus spread to North Carolina, Virginia and Florida in recent weeks.
In the same region, Canada confirmed H5N1 bird flu in a commercial poultry flock in Nova Scotia, triggering varying trade restrictions from importers, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said last week.

    Industry 2022-02-10 10:32:50 2025-08-14 17:34:49 Details Edit Delete
4136 Avian flu is heading to Europe Russia and Kazakhstan have been already hit by an influenza wave due do wild birds migration route to Europe.
In the last couple of weeks, Russia and Kazakhstan have been confronted with several outbreaks of bird flu in both wild and domestic birds as the autumn migration in wild birds is crossing their territories. EU officials have warned poultry producers to step up surveillance against possible outbreaks of avian flu among wild and domestic birds. "EU countries are being urged to step up surveillance and biosafety measures to protect themselves against possible new outbreaks of bird flu this year," a report issued this week said. The disease is highly contagious to birds, but the risks of transmission to humans are considered low. However, in the past cases of transmission from infected birds to humans have occurred. "However, to minimize the risk of transmission to humans, people are advised not to touch dead birds without wearing adequate personal protective equipment," said the same report.
The last outbreaks of avian flu were reported in January by Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Germany. Due to this situation, poultry products from these countries have been banned in some external market for more than 6 months. At the beginning of September, Poland, the largest producer of poultry in the EU has regained access to Singapore.
    Industry 2020-10-02 08:49:03 2025-08-14 16:54:59 Details Edit Delete

1658 Automatic pig carcass scanner gets homologated in Spain and Poland The system developed by an Irish company can classify 900 pigs per hour and provides information on the composition of the carcass.
GM Steel Fabricators, an Ireland-based company specialized in producing equipment and services for abattoirs and processing plants of all sizes, announced that its Automatic pig carcass scanner was homologated by the competent bodies in two European countries.
In June, PIGSCAN system successfully carried out the trials required by the regulators in Spain and Poland, reports Feedstuffs magazine.
"PIGSCAN has been developed in collaboration with Lenz Instruments from Barcelona and with financial assistance from the EU 7th Framework Programme for Research & Development in the Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology Industries.
PIGSCAN technology will give a simple result for lean meat vs fat yields in pigs, which with knowledge of the carcass weight will produce a volume of lean meat yield from the carcass.
With additional funding from the Horizon 2020 Programme, we hope to commercialise the technology, which is intended for small and medium-sized meat processors", informs the company.
The automatic scanner has been designed for the classification of pig carcasses in a vertical position, which facilitates the integration of the system in the slaughter line and significantly reduces its integration costs. "The grading of the four prime cuts still in the whole carcass will allow the slaughterhouse to optimize their subsequent production processes (cutting, further processing, labelling, and packing) and to ensure that the best raw material/the-right cuts are destined for the right process or commercial product', mentioned the producer.
The system is designed to be used without an operator and will require minimum modification of the processing line. PIGSCAN employs a contact-less inspection method that preserves the integrity and physical characteristics of the meat and avoids the risk of cross-contamination. Besides Lenz Instruments Barcelona, the project has attracted partners like Vion Food, Danish Technological Institute and Institut de Recerca i Tecnologies Agroalimentaries (IRTA) from Spain.
    Technology 2018-07-26 06:04:28 2025-08-14 22:03:36 Details Edit Delete
