4201 | China reports an increase in pig inventory | The national herd is now 21% up from a year ago but still below pre-ASF figures. |
China's pig herd rebuilding is going forward, with 370 million head at the end of September, up 21% from a year ago but still 16% lower pre-ASF levels. However, the trend is to stay, as the Chinese pig producers are reporting profits of over $200 per head. The sow herd at the end of September is reported to be 38.22 million head, after month on month sow herd increase from the low 12 months ago. The current sow inventory is 14% lower than at the end of 2017, about 6 million sows down. "With greater hog supply China’s price has begun to decline from 37.02 RMB ($5.53)/kg at the first of September to 30.94 RMB ($4.60)/kg last week. We only wish to have prices like that in North America. As China production increases, we expect China will require less imported pork," commented Jim Long, CEO and President of Genesus Inc.
However, once the ban on pork imports from Germany was put into place in September, exporters from Brazil, the US, Canada and Spain have increased their presence in the Asian market.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-11-03 09:48:05 | 2025-07-28 08:38:45 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3987 | New set of rules for Chinese meat importers | The National Health Authority presented a series of mandatory compliance guidelines for meat companies aimed at fighting COVID-19. |
Meat importers from China must now obey a series of mandatory compliance guidelines for meat companies aimed at fighting COVID-19, as the country still suspects that the virus can be carried by meat and meat products. "All imported meat products must certify, among other documents, the necessary certificate to carry out nucleic acid tests. Full traceability of all meat products must be proven. All slaughtered animals from which meat imported into China is sourced must originate from areas considered to be non-epidemic. Both farms and slaughterhouses, cutting rooms, processing centers or cold storage involved in any of the phases of the treatment of a meat product that arrives in China must certify the carrying out of complete and periodic cleaning and sterilization", says the new set of rules issued by the Chinese government. Several major meat exporters have been impacted recently by a halt in meat imports issued by China due to COVID-19 outbreaks in their processing units. Most of those companies are from Europe and South America.
| 1 | Market | 2020-07-27 11:10:12 | 2025-07-28 15:36:14 | Details Edit Delete | ||
8208 | Argentine: The Government lifted the restriction on the export of live cattle | The National Government lifted the restriction on the export of live cattle intended for slaughter for consumption, through Decree 133/2025 published this week in the Official Gazette. |
The authorization to export beef in this way was formalized by the repeal of Decree 322/1973, which prohibited this practice, although it "authorized the National Meat Board to allow exports of live cattle to neighboring countries and the Republic of Peru."

The easing of beef exports comes amid a record level of exports in the sector in 2024, totaling a historic 629,949 tonnes of product weight, 11.8% more than in 2023 and 2.2% above the maximum reached in 2020.

The official text argued that the measure is based on Decree 70/23, promulgated at the beginning of Javier Milei's administration, in which "the powers of the National Executive Branch to impose economic import and export prohibitions were eliminated, in order to provide legal certainty to those who invest in the country."

Along the same lines, he recalled that "the aforementioned decree, in its article 2, establishes that the National State will promote and ensure the effective validity, throughout the national territory, of an economic system based on free decisions, adopted in an area of free competition, with respect for private property and the constitutional principles of free circulation of goods, services and work."

He also stressed that "Article 3 of the aforementioned decree establishes that the Argentine authorities, within the scope of their powers, will promote greater insertion of the Argentine Republic in world trade".

In addition, he explained that Article 142 of DNU 70/23 replaced Article 609 of Law No. 22,415 (Customs Code) and its amendments, "determining that the National Executive Branch may not establish prohibitions or restrictions on exports or imports for economic reasons, which may only be carried out by Law".

The Government therefore considered that the repealed Decree "constitutes a ban on exports, based on a policy regarding the marketing of beef that is contrary to the provisions of Decree No. 70/23 and Law No. 22,415 (Customs Code) and its amendments".
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2025-02-28 00:05:08 | 2025-07-28 17:45:36 | Details Edit Delete | |

3221 | Denmark, one step closer to ban fluorine in food packaging | The National Food Authority expects the ban to take effect until July 2020. |
Denmark is taking steps to ban harmful fluoride in food packaging. Even if some businesses in fast food and retail have voluntarily phased out the substances used in surface treatment of cardboards and paper for food, analyzes show that these substances may still be contained in the products.
"I will not accept the risk of harmful fluorinated substances migrating from the packaging to our food. These substances represent such a health problem that we can no longer wait for the EU," said Food Minister Mogens Jensen in a press release.
The ban is being consulted today and should apply until EU regulation of the drugs comes. The ban includes the use of all organic fluorinated compounds in food contact materials of cardboard and paper. It will continue to be possible to use recycled paper and paper for food, but if there is a fluorine content in the material, then it must be separated from the food with a barrier which ensures that fluoride does not migrate into the food.
The problem with the fluorinated substances is that they are very difficult to break down in the environment, and some of them accumulate in humans and animals. In addition, many of them are suspected of being carcinogenic and endocrine disruptors.

The ban has been put into external consultation on the consultation portal. The National Food Authority expects the ban to take effect until July 2020.
| 1 | Retail | 2019-09-02 05:52:20 | 2025-07-28 02:47:13 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2532 | Australian lamb slaughter is heading for its lowest level in six years | The national flock is declining due to poor weather conditions and poor lambing rates, according to MLA. |
Australian lamb slaughter is forecast to reach its lowest level since 2012 as poor conditions that impacted 2018 are expected to continue to affect sheepmeat supply this year, according to Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) 2019 Sheep Industry Projections.
Lamb slaughter is forecast to decline 7% in 2019 to 21.2 million head, while sheep slaughter is predicted to be down 16%, to 8 million head.
The national flock has already declined by over 4 million head, or 6.1%, to mid-2018 and a further decline of 3.7% is expected to take place mid-2019. Both sheep and lamb carcase weights were impacted by the tough conditions and a high cost of feed in 2018, and this is expected to continue in 2019 with feedstocks depleted and feed demand to remain high until conditions improve. "The average lamb carcase weight is expected to remain around 22.4kg/head in 2019 while the national average sheep carcase weight is expected to stabilise in 2019, at 23.6kg/head. A fall in slaughter and carcase weights is driving the 7% forecast decline in lamb production for 2019 to 475,000 tonnes carcase weight (cwt). Mutton production will likely see a steeper drop of 16% to 188,000 tonnes cwt", explains Scott Tolmie, MLA’s Market Intelligence Manager.
Luckily, robust international demand is supporting Australian exports and, in turn, domestic prices. "The expectation for supply, and consequently exports, to decline in both Australia and New Zealand will likely see global competition for sheepmeat intensify in 2019. The conditions that drove strong prices for well-finished stock last year look likely to remain in place in 2019, particularly while conditions remain dry. Sheepmeat supply out of Australia and New Zealand – which account for more than 70% of global trade – has been unable to keep pace with strong global demand, led by China in 2018", added Tolmie.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-02-05 04:51:05 | 2025-07-28 15:10:08 | Details Edit Delete | ||
639 | NFU Scotland is committed to offering support for Orkney abattoir | The National Farmers' Union of Scotland (NFU) announced its commitment to finding a solution for the affected members of the Orkney abattoir after the local council has announced the closure of the island's only facility of this type. |

The abattoir had been run by the local butcher consortium Orkney Meat Processors Ltd (OMPL) and it was shut down recently because of fears that the standards from this unit would not be able to be upheld without substantial investment.

NFU Scotland Livestock Committee Chairman Charlie Adam said: “The sudden closure of the abattoir on Orkney late last week is a disappointing development, without an abattoir operating on the island the Orkney Beef PDO and Orkney Lamb PDO cannot be used. The closure also causes a major difficulty in the production of North Ronaldsay mutton, which is vital to the small community.

“NFU Scotland is working with members in Orkney to discuss what should happen next. Clearly, all parties must get around the table to explore market opportunities and to assess available options. The abattoir has at times provided a necessary service for farmers and crofters on Orkney and it is only sensible that discussions take place between farmers, local butchers, Orkney Islands Council, the Scottish Government and other relevant stakeholders on the future of production on the islands.

“While the majority of livestock already leaves Orkney for further finishing or slaughter the abattoir provided a convenient destination, and provided PDO backed local provenance which is of particular importance to the tourist trade.”

NFU Scotland Orkney Chairman David Scarth commented: “Although it was not unexpected it is still a disappointment to those farming on the island who are at a very real risk of losing the PDO for Orkney Beef and Orkney Lamb if we go for any length of time without this facility.

“The abattoir is a vital service for Orkney farming, not only for PDO accreditation but it also provides a useful outlet for stock destined for customers in Orkney preventing them being transported to the mainland abattoirs, only to come back into local foodservice customers.

“The Union is looking to work with stakeholders and authorities, both locally and at a national level, in a hope to find both short and long-term solutions to the issue.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-01-19 12:46:36 | 2025-07-28 15:58:58 | Details Edit Delete | ||
698 | NFU urges the Environment Agency to delay charge proposals | The National Farmers' Union (NFU) says that there could be significant rises in costs for farmers if the Environment Agency (EA) introduces a series of changes to its charging regimes. |

NFU explained that a series of increases in application, variation, surrender and annual compliance permit fees, proposed by EA in a consultation document published last November, are disproportionately high.

Furthermore, the NFU says permit systems for poultry farming, landspreading of waste and sheep dip, on-farm anaerobic digestion and flood management would all be affected.

"These proposed huge increases within the charging regimes could have a detrimental effect on many farm businesses," Mark Pope, NFU environment forum chairman, said in a statement. "Very little information has been provided on the basis for these charge changes so the onus is solely on the EA to demonstrate greater transparency and show that these costs are fair, proportionate and competitive."

Mr. Pope added that NFU is concerned that there could be surges in costs tied up with inflated administrative costs and there will be less investment in improving efficiency, productivity and new technology. In addition, these proposals could have another downside regarding the access for new permit applicants.

"We want farming to continue to improve its environmental performance, but these cost increases could be seen as a disincentive to improve management practices or limit the availability of management options in the future," the NFU official explained.

NFU urges the Environment Agency to delay the implementation until at least April 2019 so that it will give the Union time to further discuss with the agency and find ways of keeping costs down for farmers.

“Additionally, a permit nearly always has additional and wider socio-economic and environmental benefits, such as flood mitigation, improvement in air and water quality and waste recovery, which provides wider public goods. This must be recognized when the EA calculates the costs of permit administration," Mr. Pope concluded.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-01-30 13:18:11 | 2025-07-27 11:42:01 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1227 | NFU: British farmers should be the top suppliers for the UK market | The National Farmers' Union (NFU) says British farmers should become the number one supplier of choice to the UK market. |
The NFU says there should be a policy implemented for people in the UK to be able to have access to more British food whatever their income. According to NFU, the policy should be based on a partnership between farmers and government – "a partnership where farmers are empowered to design and deliver change."

The proposed policy is part of NFU's vision for a sustainable, profitable and progressive future for farm businesses in response to Defra’s consultation on a domestic agriculture policy.

The NFU has laid emphasis on the three cornerstones it believes should not only be central to the future of farm policy but any transition period also: productivity, volatility and environment.

“We are now on the cusp of a pivotal moment, as we leave the Common Agricultural Policy and once again take sovereign control of our agricultural affairs," NFU President Minette Batters. “I am clear on what success will look like. I want British farmers and growers to remain the number one supplier of choice to the UK market, and I want British people to be able to enjoy more sustainable, quality, affordable British food at a range of different prices that suit all incomes."

“A future farm policy could uplift British farming’s ability to produce food for the nation, giving us greater security in the supply of safe, traceable and quality British food that the public trust. The policy could further enhance our reputation for high-welfare British food, which delivers for the environment, across the world.

“Caring for our iconic countryside and supporting investment and growth in rural areas is part of the unique and irreplaceable role that British farming plays in society. It’s the bedrock of the UK’s largest manufacturing sector, food and drink, which provides 3.8 million jobs and contributes £112 billion to the nation’s economy."

Photo Source: NFU - NFU President Minette Batters
| 1 | Industry | 2018-05-09 07:08:39 | 2025-07-28 12:52:48 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2189 | UK farmers warned of potential Bluetongue threat | The National Farmers' Union (NFU) is warning farmers to be careful when importing animals from countries that are not free from the Bluetongue disease. |
The NFU joined forces with other organizations, including the British Veterinary Association and National Sheep Association, to warn farmers from UK about the devastating virus.

The call comes after the virus was found, following post-import testing, in imported animals for the third time in less than 12 months.

NFU added in a statement that the infected animals have been slaughtered and no compensation was paid.

The midge-borne disease has been circulating around Europe with cases being reported in France, Switzerland, Cyprus, Portugal, Spain, Greece and Italy.

A cross-industry statement said: “Bringing in diseases into the UK such as bluetongue would have severe consequences on the health and welfare of our livestock, which can result in widespread movement restrictions and costly surveillance testing.

“In addition to these costs, if there is spread into the national herd or flock, the country loses disease-free status, which can have a significant impact on trade.

“In order to continue to protect our herds and flocks, both locally, regionally and nationally, we must be vigilant when importing livestock from high risk areas, and perhaps even reconsider importing animals from areas where BTV is present.

The organizations urge farmers who import animals from areas which are affected by Bluetongue to take precautionary measures such as pre-export testing to minimize risks.

"Such tests should provide confirmation of the BTV and vaccination status of the animals. The movement of herds or flocks should then be restricted until the required post-import testing is carried out. If imported animals are found to be infected with bluetongue, they will be culled, with no compensation."

In addition, the organizations warn that "any premises found to have bluetongue infected animals will then be placed under strict animal movement restrictions for a number of weeks, while extensive surveillance is carried out".

“Our message to all livestock keepers is to discuss any imports with their vets and consider choosing non-BTV restricted areas for the supply of stock.”
| 1 | Market | 2018-11-13 15:51:21 | 2025-07-28 13:05:29 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2374 | NFU supports USDA's and FDA's joint regulatory framework for lab-grown meat | The National Farmers' Union (NFU) announced it is backing the efforts made by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to establish a joint regulatory framework overseeing production and sale of animal cell culture technology. |
Roger Johnson, NFU president, is urging the two agencies to provide clarity to consumers as to whether or not they are purchasing meat products raised in the traditional manner or products that were grown in a lab.

“Animal cell culture technology needs to be regulated and should include roles for both the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and the FDA,” said Johnson. “It is important that this joint regulatory framework promotes fair competition for producers and the health and safety of consumers.”

Johnson noted that NFU’s member-driven policy opposes labeling alternative protein sources as “meat,” and that common names given to meat and animal products are widely understood by consumers to be the tissue and flesh of animals that have been slaughtered for food.

“Foods produced using animal cell culture technology are not slaughtered, but rather are derived from animal cells grown in a petri dish and other growing media,” he explained. “Thus, NFU opposes labeling of foods produced using cell culture applications as ‘meat’ and as related products such as ‘beef,’ ‘poultry’ and ‘seafood.’”

Johnson urged USDA and FDA to establish and clarify the standard of identity for the term “meat” in order to prevent mislabeling of food in the marketplace.

Johnson said that the US watchdogf has the responsibility under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) to deem a food “misbranded” if its labeling is false or misleading, if it is offered for sale under the name of another food or if it is an imitation of another food.

“Labeling foods produced using animal cell culture technology as ‘meat’ and other related products would be false and misleading,” he noted.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-12-27 09:07:58 | 2025-07-28 17:54:29 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5887 | NFU calls for Defra investigation into the egg supply chain | The National Farmers Union (NFU) is calling for an urgent investigation by Defra into whether an “exceptional market conditions” declaration should be made under the Agriculture Act 2020, given the severe disruption which egg producers and UK consumers are experiencing. |
A declaration under section 20 of the Act would enable Defra to use its statutory powers to provide much needed support to egg producers whose livelihoods are under threat.

NFU President Minette Batters said: “There are a huge range of issues facing the poultry sector, in particular within the egg supply chain, which have built up over months and which we have been warning of for some time. Energy price inflation and supply chain disruption have added to the worst outbreak in Avian Influenza yet. However, these pressures alone cannot explain empty shelves.

"The NFU raised concerns about the functionality of the supply chain with Defra a number of months ago in the hope of avoiding the situation we have now, with some retailers having to limit UK consumers’ access to eggs. This is surely a prima facie case of severe disturbance to an agricultural market.

"It is critical that Defra acts now to investigate the issues in the egg supply chain so that any declaration under section 20 can be made as soon as possible. Poultry and egg producers must have the confidence they need, working within a fair and transparent supply chain, with fair returns for farmers, so they can do what they do best; meet demand from shoppers for quality British eggs and poultry meat."
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2022-11-24 04:09:39 | 2025-07-28 18:47:38 | Details Edit Delete | |
531 | Organic Livestock and Poultry Practice rule to be withdrawn in the US | The National Farmers Union (NFU) has recently announced that it supports the Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices (OLPP) rule's intent and considers that this rule would improve the consistency and integrity of organic livestock practices and labeling. |

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced its intent to withdraw the OLPP final rule. The rule was finalized in January 2017, but placed on hold when the new administration took office.

NFU Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Communications Rob Larew issued the following statement in response to the announcement:

“This is a very disappointing decision by USDA, both for American family farmers and for consumers. Currently, we have too much inconsistency in how organic certifiers apply animal welfare standards to farming and ranching operations. This, in turn, endangers the organic label’s integrity and leads to consumer confusion. The OLPP rule would have helped mitigate these concerns by standardizing organic livestock and poultry practices for the voluntary National Organic Program.

“We urge USDA to find a solution that provides certainty to family organic producers and integrity to the organic label. Family farmers, ranchers, and consumers all benefit from thorough, accurate and consistent food labeling.”
| 1 | Industry | 2017-12-18 14:08:20 | 2025-07-28 00:16:07 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2472 | NFU wants government shutdown to end | The National Famers Union (NFU) Board of Directors has called for the immediate reopening of the federal government saying that the current situation is causing harm and exacerbating issues already facing American family farmers and ranchers. |
The partial government shutdown is soon to enter its fifth week and has stirred up panick among farmers and ranchers.

The NFU Board highlighted a host of issues facing Farmers Union members because of the shuttering of federal agency doors, particularly those in their communities.

“Our nation’s family farmers and ranchers are facing a financial crisis,” said the NFU Board. “Net farm income declined nearly 50 percent since 2013, and a majority of farms—farms of all sizes—have been operating in the red over the past several years. President Donald Trump initiated and escalated trade wars with China and much of the rest of the world, further depressing commodity prices and damaging America’s reputation as a reliable trading partner. The government shutdown is making these matters worse.”

The NFU Board added that due to FSA office closure, farmers cannot gain acces to the Market Facilitation Program (MFP), which was designed to help them through the administration's trade wars.

“This stems needed cash flow for farmers gearing up for the coming year. These closures also limit farmers’ and ranchers’ ability to access federally backed operating loans and microloans, and process payments that are tied to FSA loans.”

“Additionally, information, data, and reporting services provided by USDA have been discontinued, making it more difficult for producers to make informed planting and selling decisions,” it continued. “Important agricultural research efforts are being delayed or halted, and some have been lost.”

The NFU Board noted that the shutdown is also significantly delaying implementation of both the 2018 Farm Bill and summertime sales of E15.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-01-22 12:32:31 | 2025-07-28 11:26:29 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1612 | NCC animal welfare guidelines got certified |
“Consumers want to be sure that all animals being raised for food are treated with respect and are properly cared for during their lives,” said Dr. Ashley Peterson, NCC senior vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs. “The people, families, and companies involved in raising broilers – chickens raised for meat – share the public’s concern. With this certification, consumers and customers can feel confident that when buying and eating chicken, the birds were well-cared for and treated humanely.”

“Our approach to the well-being of the birds is focused on objective measures and welfare outcomes throughout the birds’ entire lives, using the latest science and data and by carefully observing the chickens’ behavior,” Peterson added.

The NCC broiler guidelines were last updated in January 2017 and the NCC broiler breeder guidelines were last updated in June 2017, but this is the first time in history they have been certified by an independent audit certification organization.

The updated animal welfare guides include the following parameters to improve chicken welfare:

Increased focus on bird behavior, objective measures and welfare outcomes;
Increasing recordkeeping and corrective action requirements both in the hatchery and on the farm;
Increasing oversight of chick welfare at the hatchery;
Adding time requirements for euthanasia of birds unfit for transport;
New parameters on catching requirements;
Improved consistencies between the NCC broiler and breeder guidelines for ease of auditing;
Adding a major non-conformance to the broiler breeder guidelines; and
Adding specifics on broiler breeder monitoring by an auditor.

In addition, the new guidelines state that birds must have enough space to express normal behaviors such as dust bathing, preening, eating, drinking, etc.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-07-18 07:14:29 | 2025-07-28 03:49:09 | Details Edit Delete | |||
153 | New welfare standards for broiler chickens in the US |

These set of standards that are part of NCC's Chicken Check program were launched for especially for consumers who will be able to access information regarding how their chicken is cared for and raised.

“NCC and its members remain wholly committed to advancing chicken welfare, continuous improvement, and consumer choice,” said Ashley Peterson, Ph.D., NCC senior vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs. “But consumers today are constantly being bombarded with negatives on labeling – no preservatives, no hormones, no additives, no this, never that. Through our Chicken Guarantees, we want to provide the baseline principles that always hold true, no matter what chicken you eat.”

ORC International's recent survey indicates that 76% of Americans still mistakenly believe that there are added hormones or steroids present in most chicken meat, and 70% believe most chickens raised for meat are raised in cages. Further, nearly two-thirds (62%) of consumers said chicken labels and packaging were confusing.

The standards for the poultry producers are based on the following principles:

RAISED CAGE-FREE: The majority of broiler chickens in the U.S. are raised in large, climate-controlled and ventilated barns, where they’re free to move about, interact with other chickens and have 24-hour access to fresh food and water.

FREE OF ADDED HORMONES AND STEROIDS: It’s the law. 5984 | Spain: The meat industry requests a reduction in VAT for meat | The National Association of Meat Industries of Spain (ANICE), given the possible drop in VAT that the Government seems to be proposing to certain basic foods, supports this measure, but demands that the meat should not be excluded from that reduction. |
ANICE recalls that meat is a concentrate of nutrients, among which proteins with essential amino acids, vitamins such as B complex and minerals such as iron and zinc stand out, which are essential at all stages of life, and especially during the growth of children and the elderly.

The reduction in VAT on meat would contribute to making this food more accessible to the population with lower incomes and would provide a balanced and varied diet, typical of the Mediterranean diet, where meat and meat derivatives are ingredients of many traditional recipes, in which It is accompanied by vegetables.
Let us also remember that iron deficiency anemia is the main nutritional deficiency of modern populations and that this is effectively combated with the contribution of iron, which is the most easily assimilated by our body, which is what meat contributes to the diet human. The meat sector is the fourth industrial sector in Spain. It contributes to generating employment and economic activity in rural areas, thus combating emptied Spain and maintaining ecosystems such as pastures, pastures or meadows, as well as helping to combat the risk of fire by making sustainable use of these environments.

ANICE states that the meat sector is also a highly exporting sector, resulting in a positive trade balance for our country of more than 9,000 million euros in 2021.
For this reason, ANICE asks the government to include meat in the set of foods in the shopping basket that will see their tax burden reduced, which is currently 10%, along with vegetables, milk or fish, among others.
| 1 | Retail | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2022-12-29 03:02:06 | 2025-07-28 13:00:42 | Details Edit Delete | |
8201 | ANICE Demands increasing the number of meat portions in schools from two to four | The National Association of Meat Industries of Spain (ANICE), committed to children's health and the fight against overweight, warns of the enormous nutritional, pediatric and medical importance of maintaining the proper balance of foods of animal and plant origin in the program of school menus. |
The Association asks the Government to reconsider the restrictions imposed on meat in school menus and adopt a broader and more scientific perspective, which considers all the factors that influence children's health and which, if not taken into account, could lead to significant nutritional deficiencies in children and adolescents.

It is evident that countries with lower per capita meat consumption have the highest rates of child growth retardation.

After requesting and accessing a hearing with the Council of State, ANICE has presented its objections to the draft Royal Decree for the promotion of healthy and sustainable eating in educational centers.

The organization has been closely following the evolution of this regulation since the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030 presented the proposal, in development of Article 40 of Law 17/2011 on food safety and nutrition for the promotion of healthy and sustainable eating in educational centers.

In this sense, the Association is absolutely aligned with the objectives set out in this legislative initiative whose objective is to guarantee a high level of protection of children's health and promote healthy eating habits in the school environment.

However, ANICE's general director, Giuseppe Aloisio, considers it essential to have a comprehensive and holistic approach in the fight against childhood obesity, "which includes key aspects such as physical activity, sedentary leisure, socioeconomic and educational inequalities, and family conciliation, among other factors, as set out in the National Strategic Plan for the Reduction of Childhood Obesity".

For this reason, the Association has asked the Government to reconsider the restrictions imposed on meat in school menus and adopt a broader perspective that considers all the factors that influence children's health.

"We cannot compromise the health and development of the youngest children at key ages, when the food they eat at their educational centre is one of the most important in their daily diet and that it is done ignoring medical and scientific recommendations. It is therefore essential that the new regulations take into account the need to balance the intake of animal and vegetable proteins as the basis of a healthy diet. Restricting red meat to one weekly portion and processed meat to one monthly portion is deficient for the proper nutrition of children, as indicated by various international scientific studies, the references of which are included in the allegations", said Aloisio.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2025-02-25 00:30:10 | 2025-07-28 16:08:45 | Details Edit Delete | |
