1656 | Slight decrease in Vietnam's cephalopod exports | Vietnam's cephalopod exports reported a slight decrease in April 2018, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP). | <p>Based on a good export growth between January and March, in the first 4 months the total export value reached almost US$176 million, with an increase of 12.5% compared to year-earlier levels.</p> <p>VASEP says squid products kept as the main export items in the period. Exports of cephalopod products increased compared to the same period in 2017, except for other processed squid and live/fresh/frozen squid.</p> <p>There was still a good growth in exports towards the South Korean market. In April shipments to this market were up 7% to almost US$19 million, while in the first four months the figure reached US$64 million, up 12% compared to year-earlier levels.</p> <p>Currently, the share of Vietnam's cephalopod sales to this market has increased to 37%.</p> <p>Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to Japan in April 2018 decreased. Exports of this item to the market valued at US$11 million, down 4% over the same period in 2017. The figure in the first 4 months of this year estimated to US$42 million, up 11% compared to the same period last year.</p> <p>Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to European Union in April 2018 reached US$6 million, down 34% compared with April 2017. The figure in the first four months of this year hit US$23 million, decreasing by 20% year on year.</p> <p>Italy, France and Spain continued to hold as top three biggest importing markets of Vietnamese cephalopod in the EU. "The grading of the four prime cuts still in the whole carcass will allow the slaughterhouse to optimize their subsequent production processes (cutting, further processing, labelling, and packing) and to ensure that the best raw material/the-right cuts are destined for the right process or commercial product', mentioned the producer.<br />The system is designed to be used without an operator and will require minimum modification of the processing line. PIGSCAN employs a contact-less inspection method that preserves the integrity and physical characteristics of the meat and avoids the risk of cross-contamination. 1660 | Argentina sends its first beef shipment to Japan | Argentina has shipped its first batch of beef to the Japanese market. | <p>The Argentine Ministry of Agriculture has announced that the country has shipped 200 kilograms of beef to Japan and that, in the next few days, another batch of 10 tons of meat will also be launched to this market. 1664 | Australian sheepmeat industry is taking a revolutionary step | <p>Australian sheep farmers could receive a better price on their animal from now considering that 90% of Australia’s sheepmeat processing capacity had now been costed for the installation of DEXA (Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) objective carcase measurement technology, with the tool already installed at JBS Brooklyn and Bordertown.<br />The announcement was made by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) Managing Director Richard Norton, the same person that first presented the national initiative for this technology since 2016.<br />DEXA objective carcase measurement technology it will pave the way for a subsequent shift from the notoriously inaccurate price averaging system underpinned by measurements currently used to pay producers, to a value-based marketing system where producers are paid for the actual quantity and quality of meat produced from each animal.<br />"The benefits of the Australian sheepmeat industry making a wholesale shift to the use of DEXA start with increased supply chain transparency", Mr Norton said, during the Woolworths Lambition event at the Australian Sheep & Wool Show in Bendigo.<br />DEXA technology and its impact on the red meat industry have been analyzed by two independent agencies (EY, Greenleaf) and by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).<br />"The reports found the use of DEXA and subsequent enabling of supply chains to meet market specifications more consistently could add in excess of $270 million per annum to the red meat industry", added Richard Norton.<br />At the same time, the accuracy of measurement enables the introduction of automated processes that improve cutting accuracy, workplace health and safety, throughput efficiency and shelf life of the product. The company said that during the recycling process, the thin Plantic plant starch layer uniquely washes away, allowing the PET tray to be recycled.</p> <p>Coles Director of Fresh, Alex Freudmann, said Coles was pleased to partner with Plantic Technologies, which is a leading innovator in renewable plant-based barrier materials.</p> <p>“This is an important new step in our goal to become more sustainable. For four years, our Coles Brand beef, lamb and pork mince has been packaged in recyclable trays sourced from Plantic. 1668 | UK's government warns poultry farmers over Newcastle Disease threat | Authorities from the UK have urged poultry farmers to prepare themselves by taking all the necessary measures needed to prevent an outbreak of Newcastle disease. | <p>The UK Government has sent out a message to all poultry farmers following outbreaks of the disease in smallholder flocks and commercial poultry sites in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.</p> <p>Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) experts have said that the risk of the disease in UK flocks has risen from ‘low’ to ‘medium’.</p> <p>Newcastle Disease is caused by a virulent strain of paramyxovirus and can be spread through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected birds.
